How is it for getting around, will atvs work or are we walking? Looking to fish in the gap area. Thanks in advance. We'll be Thursday. Good luck.

Yes,
we really do our best to help folks get on fish at these contests.
Right now it looks like our options will be:
1. Bring a snowmobile (Tom Herman and Paul Waldowski will be leading snowmobilers that want to follow them).
2. Stay on the plowed roads and fish off of them a ways (Fiskynut, myself, and others will be helping here).
It may be nice out so we may not need to drag shelters around, we'll see.
CLICK HERE for more information or to sign-up online.
[This message has been edited by Rick (edited 03-08-2004).]

I have emailed Rick to see what to do with that part. I sure wish I could be there for the drawings. I need a new ice house and auger. Matt B anad J, I am sorry for not hanging out with you on Sat. Tiffany was so excited to finally get to meet some of you guys and hopefully catch some nice fish. She has been my nurse and doing a darn good job of it! grin.gif
Good luck to all and keep me posted on how the event went.

------------------
An angler is a man who spends rainy days sitting around on the muddy banks of rivers doing nothing because his wife won't let him do it at home.
(Mark Twain)
Keep on Fishing!,
Woodman

What was the whole deal with the guy and the pout? I know he wasn't there to weigh his own fish and rules are rules. Why wasn't he there? Didn't want to quit fishing or what? Never did catch that. Congrats to the kid with the 6lb 'eye though! Nice fish. Too bad overall fishing/weather wasn't better.

Hey everyone!
The I.C.E. event was definitely a good time!! Weather was a little uncooperative but between the freezing rain, icy roads, heavy snow, wind, & poor visibility, we managed to catch some fish.
Congrats to the kid with the 6lb eye, beautiful fish!
I don't know what was better, the lady winning the Marcum LX-3 or her husband winning the Otter Lodge. Hope you guys left extra room to haul all that stuff home!
I'd also like to thank Paul Waldowski, Tom Herman, Chuck, and I'm sorry but I forgot the other guys name for letting me follow them out to their "secret spot" on snowmobile. You guys showed me a part of LOW I've never experienced before and I'm anxious to get back out there and try it again.
My only disappointment is that I didn't go to the I.C.E events at Mille Lacs, Red, or Winni this year. Guess you can count me in for next year already!

hip hop,
The guy with the pout was late coming in because he was driving a car and could not get through a slush spot, so I think he spent half an hour trying to talk himself into trying to go through or finding a new route. He ended up backing up and came through somewhere else.
I hope everybody made it home safely, the roads were bad at best, we did see a Explorer flip over just south of Red Lake but he appeared to be ok. (And everybody stopped and jumped out to help which was great to see).

Well we did did run into a problem, a there was a gap in the ice, and few of use could not make it across. I gave my fish to 1 of the guys on the other side of the gap to take ot the weight-in. Then with the help of some other pro-staffers, we made a road to get past the gap. By the time we got back I had already been DQ'ed, even thought my fish had been weighted in...

Hey Hanson,
It was great to meet you and glad you tagged along! Dennis Steele was the one you are talking about. I just hope you had a GPS that day and snuck in those coords! grin.gif We went back to that spot after the event and Sunday with several other machines. Talk about wind, whoa momma! The roads were bad, and Paul talked me into staying longer on Sunday. wink.gif Glad I did cause the roads were fine in the afternoon.

[This message has been edited by ChuckN (edited 03-15-2004).]

ChuckN,
Dennis Steele, OK it makes sense now. I've seen that name on here how many times. Dennis, thanks for hauling my auger back for me. I definitely learned a couple things about hauling your fishing gear 20 miles behind your snowmobile traveling 30-40 mph. Tie everything down REALLY well!! Only lost 1 shovel but almost the auger too.
GPS Coordinates? Hmmm. Didn't get 'em. I've been looking at a HotSpots map and I couldn't even tell you where we were. I have a couple ideas but I'm not quite sure. The darn GPS is my next purchase. I've been saying that for a year now and still haven't bought one.
My dad & I went down to Red Lake after the event and can you believe it, we got SKUNKED! I bet I caught more than 20 16" + walleyes but thats not quite what we were after.

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
