 you do have a point.i like keeping a few smaller ones..........my sunfish get scaled..and i like to clean and fry up a couple whole sunfish for myself to eat........like the good old days!!!!

Yep!! I keep a bucket full of fish and I am always in my legal right to do so !! I am very selective of the fish going in my bucket gills from 7-8 inches and crappies from 9.5-12 inches. Most of my trips on the Ice I release all the fish I catch. Yep I bring my grandma a fair number as she loves fish and my grandpa died, so if you don’t like it tough beans. I wish people would watch their own bobber and just be happy!!

So i have a question as it relates to culling. Our lake appears to have become a hot spot for what i believe are either bass tournys or leagues. Are these groups keeping fish to release later(like they do on tv) or is it automatic C&R?

That can depend on the league or tourney rules.

I can assure you they aren't keeping them for harvest.  Bass tournaments are very catch and release oriented.  Whether that be after a weigh in or immediately, almost all of them survive.

How are these tournaments doing catch and release, if the law states the fish can not be put back into the body of water after it's been in your livewell?  

 

I know BASS had to get special permission from the DNR before they were allowed to do a catch and release tournament for the AOY a few years back.  That why BASS has only been here a handful of times, I believe only twice, back to back AOYs at Mille Lacs.  They can fish Lacrosse since WI allows culling.  And MLF is all catch and release, which is they they've been to Pokegama.  

 

Maybe smaller tournaments get away with it, but I'm not a tournament guy so I'm not sure.

Their tournament permit issued by the DNR likely has a disclaimer in it about that.

You simply weigh and register every legal bass you catch during tournament hours and then they take the top 5.

 

Many of the walleye tournaments are going to this format now.  They are required to take a photo of the fish laying on a judge board and then each fish is converted to a weight based on its length.  So technically its not the actual weight but its a standard conversion.  That way the fish almost all survive instead of dying in a livewell or at a weigh in.  This practice started at Mille Lacs but it has caught on at many other lakes and rivers now too.

Unless I find it somewhere else, they removed the language stating fish can’t be released after being “reduced to possession”.  BUT we do have to immediately release all fish of a species after we reached our limit, which does end culling by my interpretation.

 

So, some massaging of the language to allow people to cull until they reached their limit and then be able to keep fishing for the same species.  Sounds like they listened to people who want their kids to be able to keep catching sunnies off the dock after they kept their 5 or 10. A compromise.
