Recommendations for 2/17-2/19?

My dad and I are coming up from Fargo for the long President's Weekend and were wondering whether fishing the Pine Island area or Whiskey Flats would be a better choice at this time of the year?

Also, what depth should we plan on looking for in each of these areas? Do we need to bring portables to fish shallow in the morning and evening or will the bite be steady out deep?

Thank you in advance for information.

I fished out from Pine Island last weekend. We were fishing 27' of water. The bite was pretty consistant throughout the day, with the best bite coming in the late morning hours. I was disappointed in the dusk bite though. If we had portables I would have tried some shallower water at sundown. Hope that helps...good luck!

fishin11, I'll be up there as well this weekend. Feel free to give me a call. We will be on the move with portables, I think our first effort will be focused on the reefs.....

I'll get your number from Shawna. We will be in a permanent but are bringing the portables along. You to be there Monday as well or just Saturday and Sunday?

Anyone know how the lakes are doing in the Madison Lake area? Still fishable? Ice pulling away from shore yet?

The big storm last weekend blew a lot of ice into shore around the park point area...the south pier was closed again and there is ice piled up around the pier...not good for the coho fishing off the pier and not good for the smelting off the point. At least the weather is going to be in the 50's for awhile it looks like.

While ice fishing on Caribou, I was gobsmacked that I could see my jig over thirty feet deep when peering down the hole.

Funny and it worked.  Say, how did you get out without Mommy and the kids?

Went up this morning. Taking the boat out in the morning on the 22 access I wont get out to far but it can be great for cats where the ice is.  lots of dead matter etc. we will see.

Don I'm surprised as how much the river sections are opening up. Checked from the 71 bridge towards Cold Spring and there's actually a bunch of open sections. Noticed the honey hole area, in the rivers mouth entering cedar island is really going quick also. Definitely looking better for a possible ice out on the lakes on the chain. Time will tell
