Long Point Report 1-12 ~ 1-15

Well we made our 9th annual trip up to Lake of the Woods last weekend. Yes, it was cold! On Friday my truck starter decided to freeze. Thanks to my long relationship with Long Point Resort I had a nice warm garage to pull it into to drop the starter spin it over and put it back. THANKS! Back to the fishing! Friday we went east in search of a Sauger bite. We ended up in 28’of water and the bite was on about 9:30am. A good portion of the fish were caught on either a gold jigging rapala or a glow red Gem-N-eye tipped with a lake shiner. It is very important to have lake shiners when fishing up there! Fat heads work but in my opinion should be used for back-up. We had plenty of sauger so I headed in for a shallow walleye bite in the evening. Four drops of a blue jigging Rapala and my walleye day was done! Saturday brought weather that was a couple degrees warmer but we still faced high pressure. We went back to see if we could get the sauger to bite again and we did it was just allot slower bite. The highlight of the trip was soon to happen. I had a locator that the battery was failing. About 10:00am it took the final dump and I went back to the cabin to get my spare battery that was supposed to be in the truck. After I sent my buddy through the sliding glass window to unlock the truck doors and I was off. (yes you never know when the crooks come out of the snow to steal stuff out of your truck on the middle of LOW) Well I retrieved my battery and was back to fishing when I noticed my dead stick slowly sink 2 inches and stop. I thought that is a weird bite? I lifted a bit and felt a fish and set the hook. Instantly the lined peeled off my reel like never before. It was coming off so fast I thought it was going to snap! The fish took it out to were it looked like I had maybe 10-15 loops left on my reel. The fish was heavy enough that I needed to hold my rod with two hands when it ran. We quickly noticed it took 5 other lines with it during the first run. Yes I believe I hooked into my first Sturgeon!

I worked this fish for 30 minutes and the best I could do was to get back to my bobber stop which was set at 28’. I started to draw a crowd in the ice house from fellow fisherman. I thought I was closing the gap on this fish after the 30 minute mark because I could lift him 1 foot closer each time after its long run. The problem we faced is that there was a massive tangle of lines and lures that had to be cut off or slid down my line so I could keep reeling. Well at the 45 minute mark I think I had him within 10ft of the ice when the fish took off with unbelievable force. The drag whined and it started to look like it wasn’t going to stop when all of a sudden the line went limp! You could have heard a pin drop in the ice house. It was over…. I was left with nothing but a tangled ball of line and the memories!

The bite continued to be slow the rest of the day but we still caught a limit of eyes and came close on our sauger. It is standard for us to eat all the fish we caught every night and we did that both Friday and Saturday night with a little help from some friends that were up there also. Nothing beats a fish fry at the end of the night!

We were in the ice house at 9am on Sunday with the goal of getting our 4 walleyes per person and leaving. We went west this time because we learned of a better walleye bite during the day. It didn’t take long. We were on the road for home by 11:30 including packing time. Sunday they seamed to like smaller glow jigs like demons or any basic jigging spoon that was small and glowed.

Sand Burr: Great post, you had me all pumped up there, I thought for sure the last line or two would tell us all what you were fighting all that time. Darn, now I guess none of us will ever know, to bad. Sounds like you fought a good fight though. Looks like a real birds nest you finally got up the hole. Bill

Sandburr I thought I heard some noise over there. I see you went shallow and we stayed put. The three in the house had a great time even though the fishing was tough. We ended taking 16 nice fish home for the four of us. Considering your "adventures" ours was a fairly quite ride home. We caught most of our fish on a dead stick with a glow red jig attached. The most exciting fish we ended up with was a 5.5 lb eel pout caught at noon on saturday. I hope to make it up there in March for somemore great action.

sand burr, my wife and I were up the same weekend you were, we stayed in trailer house just pass the propane refill tank

on sat we kept eight nice eyes and eight sauger and ate some for supper, on sunday we fished a half a day caught enough to fill us out, but I did release a 31 and a half inch walleye, neighboring fish house had a ruler so able to measure, figued it was close to 12 lbs as very very fat, always said I would only mount a walleye that was 12 lb or bigger, should have kept it but let it go, no pictures had no camera, no more then let it go when fish survey man came by and he had a digital, oh well, but I would say overall the fishing was good and basically nice sized

Way to go on the release! That would of been tough for me not to put on the wall. Fish size seems great this year out there. Did we meet in the cleaning shack saturday night? Did your wife till us we forgot a knife case?

grin.gif The frost brew liners seem to be the way to go. Between this post and another one, the silver "tackle box" apprears to be the way to go.

I'm sure a few tears would be rolling for the boys in Golden, CO looking at these pics.

Sand Burr,

We had virtually the same thing happen to us over the weekend of Janu 20th at Long Point in one of their houses. My brother hooked into one, never did see it and did it ever take line out...until the line snapped. mad.gif It tangled all six lines we had out (three of us in an eight holer). I caught the first ten minutes on a digital camera using the video feature...what a blast though!!! cool.gif

Dang, pulled the battery and put her in storage just last week or that sounds like fun. With all this wet weather it has really put me behind on getting all the fall chores done before hunting season and the winter hits and I need get the sled and ice stuff ready.  I had breakfast at Our Place just this morning coming down from Ely and was thinking of all the rides I have done in that area the last few years.  Lets try to set up a ride-trout outing next spring. 🙂

Fishing Friday and Saturday was a dramatic shift. Seems the west wind got them going. Found a reef on Friday that was loaded up with fish and they were hungry. Fished it for a few hours before losing the battle to the cold. 3 pig smallies up top in 18-20 feet, 3 keeper walleyes between 16-18" and one 25" on the sides of the reef to the transition in 24-30 feet, and 2 jumbos off the transition in the mud at 32 feet. Also lost a BIG fish--the kind that your heart sinks when it comes off the line.    Saturday was more of the same. Biting a little lighter but we managed 6 walleyes from 15-19" in between the rain and getting blown off the lake. Could've easily limited if not for some "miscues"   Did try a little bit of trolling close to dark but only picked up a small muskie. Lots of guys out trolling all weekend but I'm not sure if they were going for walleyes or muskies. Interested to know if anyone on here was one of those guys and will give a report.    Wish I was starting my trip now instead of sitting at home. I think this is going to be a phenomenal week of fishing now that the weather is going to stabilize and warm up. Best of luck to everyone the rest of the year and stay safe. Saw some of the biggest waves I've seen on vermilion with the wind last week. Can get hairy pretty quickly out there

We saw some late birds today also in west central MN.  The beans looked horrible and most corn was still in.  In 2 hours of driving I only saw three corn fields being combined each way.   We saw birds and got some roosters.  About 30% mature to 70% juveniles, not counting those late birds that didn’t fly well.  Birds seemed really jumpy today - odd for opener.  Flushing wild like late season.   Man, my pheasant legs ain’t what they used ta be! 😨

I was wondering if raps at 2 mph would work now. Will the fish still chase them down when the water temps are in the low 40s?

Thanks for the water temps. Unfortunately my depth finder temp gauge was correct.
