the last time checked one lucky FMer was in 2nd place

Posted

Last I knew Loonasea and myself were in second place but in 1st place in our friendly side bet wich I think sits over $400. Hopefully we can get a bigger fish today.

Posted

Well we did get a bigger fish that kept us in 2nd and 4th places. At VERY close to if not past 3pm ( contest was done at 3pm) a truck and boat pulled up and weighed a fish that was 2 oz. or so bigger than our 2nd place fish. (In my eyes it was late and coming by road shouldnt have been allowed but oh well thats a technical deal that they will work out for next year.)

To make a long story short we wound up 3rd and 5th and won the big Fishermans Corner side bet wich was SWEAT. It was well worth all the Rain, wind and at times lightning.

A HUGE thanks to Ripstick for your help in this deal. Without you we wouldnt have done jack!

Also it was a blast fishing with Loonasea for this one. It was a role switch day 2 but no matter we got paid. Randy to bad you were feeling so poor after or we could have went for a swim.

Guys for $10 this is a super sweat fund raising contest. Heck 2 days of fishing and a chance at $1000 for $10? How can ya go wrong? Plus the Boyscouts made a nice chunk of change. Thats the big goal.

I encourage all FMers in our area to fish it next year. Heck the day one lunch was worth twice the entry fee. YUMMY!

Oh yeh the door prizes were nice as well. wink.gif I wish I would have won the $400 towards a new set of tires.

I hope too see more FMers there next year. Even you Skippers "Potato" Kid. grin.gif Maybe we can get a FM side bet together next year? Loma you cant enter. I seen you and your honey hole fish and ringers arent welcome. wink.gif

By the way I hope you got got some sleep last night in all that nasty light show.

NL, LAS... Congrats to you 2! We had a blast on Saturday landing lots of eyes during the day & eve. FM picnick was great, thanks to the cooks & cleaners ( of fish!! )Nice to see you all.

Mostly typical Island Lake fare but 3 in the low 20's so that was cool. Tony came up with the fish of the day a nice 14" crappie right as it started to rain after dark.

Around 3am I started to fade off despite the continuing thunder & lighting. Man, that storm lasted ALL NIGHT. So when got up & collected camp we decided to leave the fish alone. After the Blowdown storm I decided to invest in a tent & it has paid off several times, none more than yesterday. I don't know exactly howmuch rain we got in the 20 or so hours it stood but we were dry inside atleast. The Loma Dingy was full of water for the bailing.

What weights won the Hawg? I didn't notice any stats on your post besides the $$. SWEET !! laugh.gif

Here's that Crappie

I was waiting to see if Ripstick would post final results but Ill try to get 1-5 correct for ya.

1st - 4.7# eye

2nd - 3.5# or right in there

3rd - 3.4# this is Loonasea

4th - ? Im not sure on this one

5th - 2.10oz Northlander

Im not sure about the rest but a lot if fish were 1.10 to 2.06 or so. Not a great weekend of fishing and a lot of good Island Lake fisherman got blanked. With the weather we had we were lucky we got the fish we did when we did.

Loma did ya get any Perch? We got a couple big ones 14" or so trolling sticks.

Congrats Steve and Randy.

I'm surprised there wasn't any big fish caught.

Posted

Im not surprised. Due to bad weather not a lot of guys fished hard or as long as they would have. I know we quit at 6pm Sat and at 2pm Sun. Weather was poor. Lightning isnt fun to fish in. No fish and money worth your life.

I thought I heard about 400 tickets were sold but some were kids tickets and some were folks who didnt fish at all. I also heard someplace that only about 40 fish were caught all weekend. So no surprise to me a 4# fish won. Especially on Island Lake with crappy weather.

I will be getting the final results tonight and will post all results and names. Im hoping Sam Cook will run them in the paper as well.

Now when are we doing the Lake Superior outing?

Here are the fianl results for the Hawg Walleye Tourney held this weekend on Island Lake north of Duluth.

1st place - Robert Mickelson 4# 7oz eye

2nd - Joe Davison 3# 6oz.

3rd- Randy "Loonasea" Mougel 3# 2.5oz

4th- Joel Kemp 3#

5th- Steve "Northlander" Sutherland 2#10oz

6th Barney Kokal 2# 10oz (Tie went to 1st fish weighed)

7th Pat Walsh 2#5oz

8th Jack Walkowiak 2# 4 oz

9th Scott Carlson 2#3oz

10th Dave Tracey 2# 1oz

11th Deb Jenings 2# 1oz (Tie payed out due to both fish weighing in at same time)

The amount of money raised for the Boyscouts isnt yet tallied up but better than last year.

As stated earlier roughly 400 tickets were sold along with several cash donations from local bussinesses and private donors.

The Boyscouts would like to thank all that particpated in this event and look forward to seeing more people and FMers there next year.

Loma what were ya thinking? I told ya you should have got a ticket. To tel ya the truth we were just following you! We had others that would have placed as well but you can only take one place so our biggest fish each day got enter as soon as possible. Good thing or my 5th would have been 6th.

Ill see ya out there with a ticket next year man.

Truth be told, my plan was to get a ticket on the 28th. My BDay was 29th.

28th. the wife & I had a date to see 'Pirates-o-The Cariban' on Friday night. I was going to drop her off to get the Tix before the movie then head to Pike Lake to get in the Island Lake mix. As it was the BBsitter arrived late & we only just made the movie.

At 9:30am / 29th I was too late at Chalstroms to give my money to the 'Scouts. I hope they did well & don't regret a thing as the movie was Great & dinner a new-dad treat. wink.gif

I'll think of this lean year as a place to start.

BTW My buddy from the Mille Lacs fourm ( BlackJackDavey ) found me a new engine cover for $25!

I'll need a 'lil help to get with a boat in any Superior Get To Gether'. Maybe with Randy ( if he's got room ) or any other boat that likes a novice on board. He he he... Till next time, -CLoma

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.

Jeff and I fished Saturday and half day Sunday, targeting whitefish, ciscos, crappies, and perch.  The bite was tough for us.  We ecked out a few, but nothing special.  Highlight of the weekend was the sled ride into Wolf Lake and having an eagle swoop in and eat a rock bass we had on the ice.  All in all, not a bad way to waste time.
