How's Your Winter?

So? How's it been so far? Tying? Fishing MN's winter season?

I've been out a few times and haven't been skunked, but fish have been lethargic in the colder water. That and spooky from high sun and low, clear conditions.

The tying is going well, but I've been slacking over the last few weeks and haven't tied up the caddis and baetis that I told myself I was going to...

I'm ready for the spring season, for sure.

Man, even though the weather is mild, we are in the depths of winter.

I've been out trout fishing twice in SE MN, once on the Whitewater system and once not far from Lanesboro. The weather was pleasant both times. There were fish rising with fair frequency to midges when I first got on the WW, but if I cast from a distance that didn't spook the fish, I couldn't see my fly! Caught three on nymphs. The second outing was considerably more productive, but it was strictly a nymph fishing deal - only a couple of rises all day long. I also had ice slowly form in the guides nearly all day.

The tying has been going okay. I'm trying to do a better job of this year of relating my tying to what I'm going to be using soonest, so I've cranked out a number of small nymphs, sowbugs and the strange, but strangely effective, pink squirrel. I think blue wing olive patterns come next.

I was out in Fillmore Co. yesterday. Midges from 9:30 until I left in the afternoon. Fished simple scuds with midge trailers and did well (30-35 trout). The weather was unreal, so it was a great day top to bottom.

Back to the tying bench now that winter has reappeared.

This is the bait frig at L&M in Virginia, the other day. Also, added Highway 65 bait.

I think electric items have their places, I just don't think large commercial jobs are going to be able to work well with them. Can't see a logging crew out in the woods all day changing batteries!

I agree on the choices.   I didn't mean to say that a battery auger was better or greener or whatever.  I could care less about that.   It just seems that "most" ice anglers have made a switch to a battery auger in recent years.  That's all I was saying.  I know about a dozen people who regularly ice fish and they all have battery augers now.  I bet if you conducted a survey of all ice anglers, the majority would answer that they use a battery powered auger.

Best weed eater I've ever run with great longevity is Echo, I'd check them out

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."
