Arnesons Sleepers?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone give me some details as to what Arnesons sleepers are like on the inside, and what you needed to bring or not bring? I am planning a trip for the last week in January and I am thinking of giving them a try just to fish the reefs as a change of pace. I know that they have a website (no pictures) and I could call them too, but I have never been steered in the wrong direction here. Anything you can tell me will be useful. Thanks!

Snowman,

First off, Arnesens runs a very good outfit and has pretty nice sleepers. There is a foldup table with about four chairs for eating and cards. They come with a two burner stove top, but no oven. They have a little area in the back with a bucket and garbage bags to take care of business, so no need to go out. and the usual bunks with a mattress. We were very happy when we used them and were glad we went the sleeper route. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bring a cushion - they are padded folding chairs but we go up there for 3 + days and your behind can get pretty sore. They run a very good outfit.

snowman, Ive used them alot very well run resort, but not the sleepers, I stay in one of their cabins, ask for tips from Albert or any of the Bros, they will have good info. very nice lodge and eating area. They also have air bags on their trucks and use a air boat to take people out if the ice is bad. Safety first. Jan the ice should be good. I havent heard if the ice is bad up that way, I would call, I would also think about one of their cabins and rent a day fishhouse, come back and eat at the resort or cook fish in the cabin. Good luck

I heard that the fish bite from sun up to sun down, and thats it. So there is really no point in sleeping on the ice right?

Arnesen's is a class operation! A group of 4 of us broke in their brand new taj mahal called the Pike last February. I can't remember the exact demensions, but lets say 12 x 24'. Their friendly guide team checked in on us regularly, we caught plenty of fish (which they cleaned for about $0.75/fish + a well deserved tip), and we had a great time despite the bite shut off @ 4:30pm. We put down the Pout lines for a good laugh at night. The guides recommend boiling the Burbot back straps in Sprite for optimal flavor, but opted for the catch-n-release...They say nothing better than a steak and "poor mans lobster on the ice"...We will be back at Arnesens this February staying in their cabins, but certainly thought about another weekend in the Pike Dream...Bring a grill, a deck of cards, some floating poker chips, and a few barley pops and you are gauranteed to be on the hard water for first bite every morning!

I stayed at Arnesons last year at the end of the season in a sleeper. The fishhouse was very clean for end of season. Bring cushion and kitchen supplies (pots, pans, utensils, dishsoap, dish rags, and towels). I arrive at 10am and I was fishing by 10:30. Friendly and efficient.

My electronics often say that I am on land when I'm on the water. Trust is a two-way street!

Fishing is still pretty good.  Went with a friend and the dog yesterday for about 5 hours, managed 19 largemouth and 10 pike.  I normally don't take photos of pike but several of these fish were on the larger side and quite thick so they made the cut.  One of these days my fishing season is going to be over but for now the fish are still cooperating.

On our fall trip, we saw many examples of downed trees on Pine Island. Small trees being cut with chain saw and piled. Any insight on project?

On the South End...  Fall fishing on Lake of the Woods is excellent right now.  The colder water temps have the fish snapping.     Walleyes and saugers are being caught in a variety of locations across the south shore from 20 to 27 feet.  Water temps are in the low to mid 50's. Jigging with frozen, or live emerald shiners is catching a pile of fish.  Anchor up and jig over the side of the boat.  Typically, lots of small fish to sort through but you will get your keepers along with some larger walleyes. Jig colors to consider are gold, glow white, glow red, chartreuse, orange, and pink.  Gold combined with any one of these colors is often a good choice.   On the Rainy River... The river continues to get better and better with more walleyes moving in each week.  Good fish being caught in many sections of the river.  The morning and evening hours have had the best bite. Walleyes are actually being caught using three methods.  Jigging with frozen or live emerald shiners, pulling spinners and trolling crankbaits.  15 - 25 feet of water has been the norm. Sturgeon fishing continues to pick up as the water cools.  The "Catch and Release" sturgeon season is in place right now.  The river holds a myriad of species of fish.  Crappies, pike, smallmouth bass, suckers, bullheads and even an eelpout or two are being caught up and down the river.   Four Mile Bay is also holding some nice walleyes as they make their way in from the lake.  Various areas on the edge of the current and channel break are good spots to begin. Up at the NW Angle... Another great week of fall fishing up at the Angle.  Walleyes are keying in on various areas with structure.  Points, neck down areas with some current and transition areas from rock to mud are good right now. Walleyes are the most sought after but in the fall, lots of muskie and crappie anglers are around as well.  Good reports on a variety of species including jumbo perch and pike as the waters cool.      Put on some warm fall clothes, make sure your camera is ready and make some incredible fall fishing memories.  There is still time to get in that last fall trip.
