Lake Pepin Trolling

Recommended Posts

Was thinking about giving lead core line a try on Pepin. I have noticed that there are several different weights of lead core on the market. I need some suggestions on what weight to buy. Also, does the line do anything to the rod guides? Can the palomar knot be used with this and do you use a mono leader?

Thanks for your help!!!!!

Leadcore comes in 18, 27, 36 and 45 lb weights. The most common seems to be 27, but that could open a discussion of it's own. It will not hurt eyeguides on rods and about any knot will work. I usually tie a barrel swivel to the lead with 2 half hitches then attact a 3 to 5 foot peice of mono for the leader. You will also find that speed affects leadcore to a great degree, so I would recommend you to use a large capacity reel, i.e. Accudepth 47, 209 Penn, etc. if you want all 10 colors on the spool.

Good Luck

Capt. H,

I learned a neat trick on connecting lead core to mono without a swivel from a guy at Cabelas. Take the sheath of the lead core back about 3-4 inches and cut the lead core leaving the 3-4" sheath. Then thread the mono inside the sheath and make a single loop knot on the section with the mono inside the sheath and cinch it tight. I fished with it that way all summer last year and had no problems. It eliminates needing a swivel to connect them and allows you to fish with a longer mono leader if you want to. I use a 15 ft mono leader.

I have a Weboost cellular amplifier at Wakemup Bay. It increases the signal from 1 bar or less to 3-4 bars BUT there is more to the story than bars. For data (like streaming video) I get faster data speeds WITHOUT using my booster. The reason as I understand it is that cellular data transmits and receives on multiple channels simultaneously (its called Multi-In-Multi-Out or MIMO.) Most boosters only amplify a single channel at a time. While the phone shows a good signal from the booster it can actually reduce the data speeds that are available with MIMO transmissions. A booster can improve your voice communications while diminishing your data speeds. You might want to look at the Mobile Internet Resource Center on YouTube for a better explanation.

57 in Black Bay and 44 in Niles Bay today.  The lake is changing by the day and the fishing reflects it.

So sorry, wish I could boat over to help. I think we will wait an extra week to head north.  Prayers for a good resolution.

Good morning Mtnman. Yes, the whole rainy lake watershed is under a flood warning. Water is as high as it was back in 2014. Forecast is that is should peak around May 20. All the ice went out last week with all the wind and rain we had. My dock didn’t make it though. Ice blew in and lift the whole thing, crib and all. Mother Nature…adds another project once the water is warm enough to work in. This week looks a little drier…I hope! Safe travels when you do head North.

The water was over 22 at the very south end of Mud and the overflow pond. I took that route to get to the cabin, I just moved the signs and drove through, saw a couple carp sunbathing on the warm road. 😂
