Pool 4 memorial day report

Recommended Posts

Well, spent the holiday on Pepin, 8am to 3pm.

The sun beat down all day, for what seems like the first time this year. Unfortunately, that did not aid fishing, at least for me.

Ended up with:

1 17" walleye

1 11" walleye

2 11" sauger

3 white bass

Stuck with cranks the entire day, so it's possible 3-way/live bait setups would have done better, but who knows. Trolled in the channel, head of the lake, maiden rock, and point no point.

Anybody else out there today with better luck?

About the best entertainment today was listening to the "yacht" chatter on 68...the human race really has some unique specimens out there...

Made it out on Sunday (between 9:30-3:30). Started out trolling cranks from Hok-Si-la up to Hansons. There were quite a few boats stuffed in there. Then moved up to the head of the lakes. There were a few boats up there but I didn't see much action going on between their boats and ours. By that time we figured it was a good day to stick with trolling cranks. Continued that throughout the rest of the day. Only managed two dinky walleyes and a bunch of stripers. I was kind of surprised to not see anyone fishing long point. Usually that's a jiggin' hot spot, so "they" say..

Good luck this summer everyone.

kpj5br, We also fished the flats catching one legal walleye and a 14 inch sauger and some more of smaller fish like you caught. We were trying to figure out if the fish were shallower or deeper. We worked mainly the 10-11 foot depths and tried the 14-15 foot depths with no takers. Saw only 3 or 4 legal fish caught all day. Wasn't as many people fishing as I thought there would be.

I just want to thank you guys. I thought I was the only one not catching fish down there this weekend. We fished Maiden Rock, Lake City, and Maple Springs and never saw a fish caught! Tons of fish on the locator, but no biters. Oh well, that's why they call it fishing and not catching.

Fished lacopolis most the day on sunday, ended up with 4 keepers and many smaller walleyes and saugers...no keeper saugers..1-24'....2-18's...1-16'walleyes.

I noticed that the other boats were very slow..Not sure if it was luck or our presentation but most others had only 1-2 fish altogether...we threw back atleast 8 shorty's.

We went very shallow along the drift as soon as the sun started to go..probably 1 1/2 hours before dark. We used 3 way rigs with 3/4ounce wieghts set only 1 1/2 feet from the swivle. Used 3 red gam'y hooks made into a crawler harness..with one small yellow bead. No spinners...floats..etc. would guess that we ran in 5 1/2 feet behind the swivle. DONT let the wieght drag!! seemed we had the best luck just "feeling" for the bottum rather than letting lots of line out and dragging the bottom.Tried fat heads with no luck and only 1 shorty on a leach..crawlers are the ticket it seems.

fish hit very hard.

misc..caught a few sheephead several stripers and a 10+lbcat fish.

Fished monday from 11-7. Caught 4 walleyes, 3-15" 1-11", and 8-10 stripers. Fished the Wisconsin side from north of Maiden rock down to Ivan's Bay. Caught one of the walleyes tight to shore under some overhanging trees on a jig and minnow, another off Erichsons point in 20', one on top of the point coming out of stockholm in 13' and one off Ivans point in 22'. The 2 off the points were in deep water on the downriver side of the points. Saw alot more on the graph, no takers. Stripers all over.

Well, I'm actually encourage, at least it wasn't just me! Sounds like pretty much the same experience all around, we also were marking fish very consistently, good clear well-defined arches, but they just wouldn't take.

I chalk it up to the rare sun beating down! smile.gif

I didn't get to fish on Memorial Day, but fished Sunday, Tuesday and today and am happy to report limits all 3 days. Sunday was a combination of river(Bay City Flats) which produced eyes of 21, 20 and 17 1/2 inches and then the mid lake area by Lake City which produced about half a dozen sauger n the 16 to 19 inch range. The other two days I stayed in the lake and managed limits of sauger and walleye with the largest being about 21 1/2 inches. Lots of small, but also plenty of nice ones. Fished only crankbaits in 9 to 18 fow with most of the fish coming in 16 to 18'.

Don't take me wrong, I'm not anti-technology.  Battery powdered items will always have their place.  I'm mean you don't want your girl friend or wife in the bedroom playing for their gas powered adult toys!!  That would be a bit loud and smokey!

That’s right. My 84 year old dad loves his electric chain saw. Light weight and quiet. Besides, at his age he’s not cutting a bunch. Where as myself I want something with more power and heavier duty.  Look at how many people have switched back to gasoline cars after running one in winter if you travel a lot.   As long as my strike master works I’ll keep using gas. Maybe my next will be electric, but who knows,  you can find used gas ones pretty reasonable as others buy electric.
