once in a lifetime catch

tonight after work I picked up my Dad and went to try some jigging on the river,north of Newulm, we were casting into about 15 feet of water,when he hooked something, it shot straight out of water,it looked like a northern, I thought,but it was actually a sturgen, it took my dad about 15 min until we got it in boat, My wife told me to take my camera this morning, but i was in to much of hurry so guess what no camera, When we got home my dad called his neighbor who works for the DNR He told him that a sturgrn that size(44inches) is a lake sturgen and normally the are shovelnose and weigh only 5 pounds or smaller , I just thought this was pretty cool since my dad has been fishing river for about 50 years and has never caught a sturgen before, He was really depressed not being able to get picture.

Thats very interesting and i have a very similer story. A couple years ago me and 2 buddies were catfishing also north of new ulm when he hooked into a lake sturgen. we had no clue what it was until his dad came over and told us it was a lake sturgen. it was about 40 inches. the crazy thing is we released and about 10 minutes later he caught the exact same fish.

thats odd catmaster all the time we spent in "the Lund" this summer and i never heard that one out of you. anyways congrats on his catch. catmaster and i are both from new ulm im guessing you were in a boat if you found 15 ft of water north of new ulm?

Cool! Maybe the lake sturgeon is making a comeback in that area since the water quality has improved. I've heard reports of paddlefish also. I'm heading up to the Rainy in 2 weeks for some sturgeon fishing. Vern
