Fishing was pretty good last weekend and on Monday as well. We wound up staying in the water till just after six o'clock, and by the time I got the fish clean and everything loaded or put away we didn't get on the road to home until 7:45. I was driving back to the Twin City's so that's a pretty late start. I wasn't quite seeing straight by the time we got back but we made it safely. It was just so nice being out on the water that day that it was hard to leave.
Fishing out of the gap with just about anything has been bringing in the smaller keeper fish. We managed to bring in a bunch of fish monday morning fishing just out of the gap. We seemed to do best from about 13 feet on up to 17 feet. No real big fish but that's been the story of my fishing season so far.
We downrigged in the afternoon. Picked up a little bit better fish but alas no big one's for me. Blue chrome baits seemed to be doing the best last weekend. Sounded like shad rap number 5's in the blue chrome finish. I seemed to do better on a Yozuri Crystal minnow that had the blue top and the chrome side in a shallow diver.
I would recommend checking the lines every 15 to 20 minutes just to make sure you don't have a dink on.
I'll be up at LOTW Saturday and Sunday this weekend but have some other stuff I have to get done as well when I'm up their that will keep me off the water a little bit.
Later, Ryan

Thanks for the report Hines! Out of Warroad the fishing still has been pretty steady using live bait rigs. Great times to be out on the water, not nearly as much boat traffic as early summer and fish to be caught. Also the size has been picking up quite a bit. Not much more you could ask for other than a bit more of the sun...
FF

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
