Fished on Friday.
Nothing great to report.
Caught some nice jumbo perch, a couple of nice walleyes, and quite a few 12-14inchers.
Traveling to TRF on Saturday morning we ran into lots of Thunder and lightning. The roads were like a skating rink by the time we got there. Strange weather.
[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 03-15-2004).]

Hi Bob, it would be nice to see you again. I don't have any real plans as of yet. Shoot me an email and let me know where your staying, fishing plans and what not.
I got to fish with that WT on Friday, we fished an area thats about as good a spot as a guy can fish this time of year and it was tough for sure. Did manage a few pretty nice fish but it was a bit of a struggle compared to the past couple of times out that way. Just perfect that cold snap had to hit the day before this trip! High point was WT schooling me on the potential, and the use of his favorite weapon.....Yes WT I'm a believer! I'd sure like to get out that way a few more times yet....gonna get better and better and I've yet to get what I consider a big one thru the ice yet, I'm certain it would happen with another shot or 2 at them this time of year out thata way.
Thanks for unstucking our p\u and trailer with your Widetrack Widetrack. Man those things can pull! Thanks again for then later waiting while we walked off the pond too!!! We were snatched out the next morning with a trackvan, big thanks to Larry. Longrange icefishing trips, not just fun but a true adventure!
Days are gettin longer and the sun is gettin stronger. Big prespawn Walleye thru the ice while sitting outside on a bucket, big Perch, big Pike, the river opening up soon for that early bite from a boat. So many options, this time of year is just too much fun.
Fisky
Fisky:
Yeah, what a adventure that day turned out to be. It was midnight when I got done cleaning my fish.
Glad do hear you got it out the next morning.
Missing the early, and late bite didn't help our cause much.
I know the right weather, and that spot will explode one of these days.
We'll see if we can give another go before the ice season ends. It was cool fishing with you, and Josh.

[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 03-15-2004).]

Good deal Fisky -
I'll shoot you an email later in the week when I know what is happening with the river and weather and such. We are staying at the Americinn in Baudette. I wanted to have a special weekend this winter for my son and my wifes little (19?) brother so I reserved the room back in December. It was the first weekend they had open all winter that I could get. I figured the boys would have fun fishing by day and swimming by night!
That was before I had a taste of URL Carppies grin.gif....................Now the river is opening, and I want to fish URL at night and I also want to fish the Big Pond. I am soooo confused tongue.gif.

Okay then Dr B, I'll watch for your mail. Checked out Sandee's site this morning, she had pic's of Birchdale up from yesterday, looks like the ice dissappearance kinda stalled over the weekend due to the weather. Small boat and muscle power maybe by the weekend but who knows....All you can do is keep hoping!!! Might want to bring an auger! You wanna hit the ice I know where to go, a spot with great potential for enormous Walleye, Pike and Perch to come up the same hole at this time of year. You would like it!
WT, you wanna head up there again during the week sometime and need a partner let me know. One of the good things about self/underemployment.....I can fish whenever I want too! I could use another lesson too on the use of your 'weapon'!
fiskyknut

Dr B, you got 2 now too! Hey WT, if we do make it out there I'll have my camera, I predict Dr B's boy will catch a fish so big the picture alone will weigh in about 2#'s!

Hey Fisky -
Maybe we should just plan on it. It is not looking good for the river and even if it does open it is going to be a mad house this weekend.
I just found out today that I got 4 vacation days a year added on so I can take a day off during the week sometime. I am looking at hitting the river on April 6th or 7th or else April 13th or 14th. My job is flexable so I can wait and maybe pick a nice day. You are welcome to join me of course grin.gif.
Birchdale is only 2 1/2 hours from my driveway.

Kind of my thoughts exactly Bob. Been there done that, 50+ boats fishing a mile long strech of river can be kinda nerve racking, but I do enjoy the people watching too! Midweek is the way to go over there if possible! Better fishing where we'll be on Saturday too if you ask me! No substitute for scratching that openwater itch though!
Shot you an email with some thoughts for Sunday. I'm game for whatever you'd like to do.
Fisky

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
