im going up to low jan 18-21 i was wondering if it is safe to take a snowmobile from morris point to garden island. i also was wondering where to fish around this island as i have not ice fished this area. i want to get away from the crowds around pine island and to explore more area on LOW

A good question. I've been out that way in years past, but this year who knows what the ice is looking like way out there. I have made it out to 12 mile by sled twice this year, travel is slow due to a large number of ridges/piles and such all over the lake. Today there was hardly any snow left at all so it would be hard on hi-fax bigtime now. If we get snow it would be doable, but it would be slow goings. Also go with a buddy on another sled, unadvisable to go twenty odd miles with just one machine incase of troubles. Most years theirs a marked trail from pine up to the angle, without snow we won't get to see that this year. As for the fishing you have the big bar off the south side but I like the reefs SE of garden. Good map and gps are needed to get on the spots and to get back safely incase of bad weather or darkness. If you go be careful. I hope we get some snow cause I wanna get out that way this year too.

Another option is to stay in the NW angle, or on Oak Island and travel to Garden from there. It sound like the ice is not nearly as messed up coming down from the angle. They may even have stick trails out on that part of the lake. A quick phone call to the resorts up there will give you the answer. <P>I have fished off of the south side of Garden before, right of the tip of Starren Shoal. Look for about 27 feet of water. Look out for pressure ridges and cracks of the east and west tips of the island. There is usually a place to cross them.<P>Good Luck!
