Curt, I don't see how you assume anyone was on their trails using them??? In my case I had just left my truck close to shore and heading out to the rock. I Had to cross their trail going to the islands, and that's where a guy did come close to me. I should have looked better too, I guess the angle was bad.
Correct me if I'm wrong but seems to me the rules of engagement on water include a Yeild to smaller slower crafts.
I stay off the trails as much as possible out of courtesy.

I can see too if I stayed with all the perks and whistles I'd tip more too. However for a basic ride to likely a predetermined house and no extra [PoorWordUsage], my bill has been paid.

Posted

I also thank that 50-70 is an aweful lot to tip. I can drive out the lake and all my gas for the weekend and it is less than that. I guess when I pay a resort and it says includes transportation I take it to mean just that. I guess I might start throwing a tip in but I will never tip in that 50-70 range. I guess not all of us are bankers and I don't have a lot of extra money to throw around but that is myself.
------------------
Grip it and Rip it
IFFWalleyes
I Fish For Walleyes
[email protected]

I think I have been driven less distance and paid more than $10.00 by taking a taxi in the cities!I'm almost certain that the cabbie did not work as hard for the tip than the bomber driver did.I think there a certain factors that warrant tips.(good results fishing, friendly attitude and going out their way to accommodate their gusets.)
I'm o.k. with $10 to $20 per guy for 2 days fishing and cleaning your fish.My .02 cents.
Hey Doc,I've got this itch that only a trip to LOW can cure. Can't wait!!Must fish!!

tips are not expected but are appreciated. anyone who has ever worked in the service industry knows that good tippers are remembered. and so are cheap [PoorWordUsage]. no bigger slap in the face than to bend over backwards for someone and have them not appreciate it.$5 per day per person is a VERY good place to start.
as far as bomder drivers driving past a stuck truck??? most resorts dont want there drivers pulling people out for liability reasons. if your stuck its because your someplace you shouldnt be. STICK TO THE PLOWED ROAD!!! remember the staked trails are for track vehicles only.

[This message has been edited by local (edited 01-28-2004).]

I agree if someone goes out of their way to help me, $5 is a good way to start but to say I would be a cheapass for not tipping someone for doing their job, get real.
A word of caution too, some of those guys drive like they own the lake and have blinders on! Don't know how their brakes or steering work but the guy who jerked my neck when he roared past me on my wheeler I don't think would have missed me if I had stopped for something |:

bombers dont have brakes, and with a top speed of about 30 mph they dont "roar past" much. Remember visibility is limited in these rigs as is manueverability (did i spell that right?) maintaining a bomber trail is a very tedious not to mention expensive ordeal so if feelings of ownership arise thay just might be justified.

Posted

Buckets, I nor no other driver is going to run you over on purpose. but like i said visibility in these rigs is poor so i wouldnt talke a chance. also in some conditions they are very hard to control so anybody that passes (from behind or head on) is taking a chance.
Amen to hunt4food, the cabin cleaners have the most thankless job on the lake BAR NONE! remembering them in your tip is a great idea.
[This message has been edited by local (edited 01-29-2004).]

Absolutely!!!This will be my 2nd year going to LOW and you may be able to tell by my previous posts,me,Doc Madison and few more friends go together.Being up there with good friends and having good times is what it is all about!!!!Catching fish is a bonus. From what I've been hearing and reading on this forum, seems most bomber drivers work hard as well as the other resort employees.I will continue tip for their services. My mother is in near 70 years old and has been waiting on tables for nearly 40 years!I've heard and seen the good and bad customer's she has dealt with.I've learned to appreciate good service.
Good Luck!!

Local, I didn't suggest anyone would do this on purpose LOL Thanks for your words of caution too. Like Curt has said any mishaps adversely affect the local economy .. I do suggest you sit on your atv while a vantrak speeds by at 20-30' and then tell me they don't "roar much" grin.gif Of course this will help if they take you by surprise!
Curt, can't wait for my next recess either !
cool.gif
[This message has been edited by Buckets (edited 01-29-2004).]

Been reading the post for a bit now - thought I'd chime in.
As my name implies, I'm a Northern Newbie. I've a seasoned veteran of a sum total of two LOW trips (third one planned in 3 wks!)so certainly don't even know what most of you forgot about this stuff.
That being said, in my past trips I've tip'd for the fish cleaning (I might be shy there -figgered 50 cents a fish), but quite honestly I never even considered the bomber driver. I don't know why - I tip the taxi driver, bellman, hotel housekeeper, the valet, etc., etc. - heck I even leave a tip at a buffett resturant, but never the bomber driver - kinda feel bad about that knowing that I 'shoulda.
That leads me to my suggestion. On every charter boat I've been on in the gulf, when you check in they give you a sheet of FAQ's (for lack of a better term).
On this sheet it outlines the 'rules' of the boat, what should be brought aboard, what to expect from the Captain and deck hand, suggested tips (it is still my purogative to NOT tip given poor service)and essentially the hows/whats and whys of whens things will happen.
Seems like something that would be a good idea for the owners to do IMHO.
Just my two - 'iffen they'd leave a few of these types of sheets at the desk, suspect it would reduce the 'burn' rate of the employees who work long and hard and understandably take offense to poor tipper's, and give us newbies a bit of needed guidance - and perhaps those that may just get too excited (I'm in that category too) when up there to remember to engage the brain (mine never caught on this topic obviously!) Bob

Curious, what is the ride like in those things?? Any stories out there about shaking up your beer (still in the case of course) or anybody get fillings shook loose? (:
N.Yankee IMHO???

Posted

The ride out in the bombers isn't too bad actually if they drive right. It's when they plow over huge humps or drifts that it can get kind of bumpy. I always have a beer in hand on the ride out and am yet to spill a drop. Plus I crack a new one the minute I get in the house (unwritten rule for us) and it's never exploded on us. I enjoy riding out in those too. Just kick back, drink a brew, and enjoy the scenery. Then magically you get to your pre-heated/pre-drilled house and start poundin' the walleyes (and the beers too of course)!

Posted

MG I like your attitude!!! Anybody who cracks a beer at 7 in the morning can fish in my house any day!!!!!!!

Posted

Yeah, the ride out in the mornings wasn't so bad.I don't really remember what the rides were like on the way back.HMMMM,kinda weird,I wonder if it was the beer?

New Yankee: Didn't see myself listed in your tipster list hmmmm. Just kiddin' Bob. We are due back up there Feb 26,27,28 maybe we can hook up. Do those dates line up with yours. Bill

lol yup If only I had a dime for everytime we had that ritual! It's always looked like the way to travel, I was just wondering.
Going up next week and will no doubt have a salute to Fun!
cheers to you's cool.gif

The newer Bombers at Sportsmans's are smooth and comfortable. The older ones at Cyrus are tight. You almost need your buddy to feed you beer because your arms are wedged in one position. All part of the experience, though! grin.gifgrin.gif

BT - sorry to say we will miss each other by a week - would have been great to see ya'll again - given the fish they fry up at the bend I'd have likely suggested we meet for dinner (your fish - you get out much more than me...LOL!).
Just spoke w/a old friend/co worker in MI and we were thinking March - don't you have a trip planned then?

New Yankee, Bob, yes we have our final trip planned for March 25,26,27. There is less ice this year than last and a lot of snow, so we're hoping that the warm weather does not mess the trip. Last year we were there the same week and it was pretty wet with lots of water to traverse especially around Pine island. The fishing was great, so hopefully the Fish Gods are on our side this year. Set up a tab for us when you get there in Feb and tell Ken at Riverbend to put a couple of your fillets in the fridge for us. We'll enjoy them I'm sure. Bill

Since the Vikings are never in it. We use it for an excuse to make some fun stuff! Last year was a bit light. Hot cheese bean dip, hot wings and pepperoni cheese bread! 😋

That snow and the 15-25 mph winds on Thursday with higher gusts will be nasty drifting. I didn't go to LOW (can I say that in the this thread?🤫) this week because of it.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay. Most anglers are targeting deep mud with others fishing structure if available where they are going out of. There are fish in both areas. Some ice roads are now extending more than 16 miles out, with over two feet of ice reported in most areas. Resorts and outfitters continue increasing weight limits. As a rule, fishing continues to be very good with consistent action for anglers. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water. Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh fish frys and bring fish home. On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent. Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well. On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom. You never know when the fish will move through. Anglers fishing the entire day normally have success. Electronics are a big help as well. On the Rainy River... The morning and evening hours are the best for fishing walleyes. A jig and minnow combination has been a good presentation. A jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is still producing some big fish through the ice. There are two sturgeon seasons on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River, a catch and release season and a harvest season in which you can keep one fish per calendar year. The harvest season runs from April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – Sept. 30. The catch and release season runs May 8th – May 15th and Oct. 1 – April 23rd. Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing remains good at the Northwest Angle. Resorts continue to move their fish houses staying on fish. Some fish houses are set up on structure while others are targeting deeper mud flats. Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike, and tullibees. Good numbers of big crappies are still being caught in select areas and hard sided fish houses are available to target them. Check with a NW Angle resort for info. Jigging one line, deadsticking the second is effective. Some days the jigging line is hot, other days the deadstick. Some good colors have been gold, glow red, glow white, wonder bread, pink, chartreuse and orange. Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Same story, different day (Monday). Caught several small walleyes (biggest were 14 and 15 inches) with the best bite from 2-5pm. Caught my record walleye this winter at 6½ (inches, not pounds). Was wondering why the bobber kept going down a couple inches for several minutes until I finally reeled it up. Fortunately it was just hooked in the lips. Having a lively minnow definitely improved the action. I put down a pike sucker for the first time this winter and got an immediate hard bite. When I went to set the hook, the line broke just above the hook. Don't know if it was a northern bite-off or just weak line by the hook. May try some pike suckers next trip. Ice conditions were very good except for heavy drifting (even with very little fresh snow). Didn't see any vehicles traveling off road except for snowmobiles and a tracked SxS, although there weren't many people out on the lake. Water came up around my house about 1½ inches but froze very quickly with the cold weather and no snow on top. Will probably have to block it up again next time up. Good luck fishing and be careful of severe drifting of snow, especially with the 3-5 inches they are predicting for Wednesday night.
