I have no problem with Gimruis' thoughts on this. IMO there is no shame in expressing regret over past decisions. It doesn't mean that he loves his kids any less.

 

My brother-in-law had four unplanned kids with his wife. I know that he regretted those decisions but he loved those kids unconditionally until the day he died a few years back. I saw no conflict there either.

my 3 kids were all unplanned too!!!!!! and when they come 2 at a time.......

 

he used the word regrets!!!! maybe i'm hung up on that, not sure. did i regret having kids....no.....did i wonder what the heck i got myself into......... oh hello yea!!!!!!! never regretted though. i am convinced that taking care of kids when i was that young more then likely kept me from getting into more trouble then i did!!!!!!!

 

yea i missed out on alot of stopping for a beer after work..........that kind of thing...........missed some fishing and hunting opportunities......and getting toys earlier.........

 

however....i give Gimruis all the credit in the world for hanging in there and doing whats right!!!! some would just walk away. and i've read his posts enough to think someday he'll be glad he had kids!!!!!!!

Well, as cold as all that sounds, it’s a position he’s owning.  Some people are meant to procreate and some aren’t.  There are a lot of unexpected people on this earth.  I think I’m one of em!

 

I never felt the NEED to have kids of my own.  Not sure why; just never did.  I’ll never know what that true parent/child connection feels like.  I might’ve had a taste of it with MY dog.  The one I wanted, put a deposit on, and waited for her to be born.  Putting her down when it came time hurt so bad I don’t know if I’ll ever get another.  
 

“Our” kids are kids by marriage.  I’ve been with them nearly their whole lives.  I love and support them but there isn’t the same connection they have with their Mom.  I know this.  They know this.  Now the grandkids - they don’t know the difference!  It’s been pretty cool with those little tykes.

I'll change things up a bit. My plans all changed on September 17th. Packing up to head home to take my wife out for her birthday. Sitting on the couch at the cabin, I started feeling a weird pain in my chest and forearms. Long story short, I'm having a heart attack! Didn't know it at the time, but had the presence mind to take some low aspirin, called the neighbor, explained what was going on and asked for a ride to the Cook hospital. They hooked me up to an EKG, told me I'm having a heart attack and going to air lift me to Duluth. A couple of stents later, I'm alive and doing fine. No damage to the heart thankfully! Doing some rehab at the Cook hospital and adjusting my diet. Hopefully, I'll be good for many more years. I don't go to the doctor unless needed, guess I should have taken better care of myself. This wasn't even close to being on the radar. Just retired in April at 62.5, I eat mostly organic foods and grass fed meat, limit my intake of processed foods, do like my sweets and bread. I'm a little over weight, I have lost about 40 lbs over the last several years, so, I sure thought I was on the right track to living a healthy life style. On a great sidenote, I was still alive to see my son get married last weekend! Hopefully, God willing, I'll have many more years on earth to enjoy!!

Same here 11 years ago, two stints, lost weight, changed jobs to a more active one with less stress of being in Mfg management for 28 years and a lot more tread-mil and walking. I think I've pulled or helped pull out 5-6 deer since.  I'm still in the game!  Good Luck!  

Big suggestion for anyone 55 or older.  Carry a little pill bottle with a few full strength bayer aspirins with you, if you are out in the woods or a long ways from help by yourself.  I know it saved my brother-in-law who ended up having a heart by pass once they got him in, the doctor told him that's what saved him.   We are all superman, until our hearts say we an't!

Thank you.  That is exactly how I feel about it.  I'm sure many of you thought it seemed cold and heartless when I initially posted it.  I'm kind of a cold hearted kinda guy anyways lol, but I have a job to do and I will continue to do it unconditionally, even if I regret some of it.  I don't take any offense to someone else's opinion on it either that was directed at me so post away.

 

I would also like to add that my Grandfather, who died of cancer in 2012, spent many hours with me growing up hunting and fishing.  Before he died he told me that quality of life is measured by the amount of time you have to do what you enjoy doing.  I've never forgotten that.

Wow - good to hear that you're all doing well. Heart attacks are no joke. If I remember, the sooner you can get to a doctor in those situations the better the chance of surviving.

They suggest people in our age group should take a low dose daily. But if it maybe a heart attack you want to hit with what ever you have as fast as you can.

So do I and they generally call them baby aspirin. Usually 81 mg.

 

I didn't till I had my bypass surgery in 2011.

Same here with the lawn today. Have today and tomorrow off to get snow fence up, everything winterized and just general honey do list done. 

Smurfy, there’s got to be a special place in heaven for a dad with 3 in diapers on his own, I had same (2 year old and twins born) but thankfully a great wife as well. Can’t imagine doing it on my own.

Just had my annual physical last week, and clean bill of health, but at 59 years old and all this talk of heart issues and  stints is scary. Just got to live life to the fullest. My wife’s boss is going through it right now down at Mayo Clinic.

Hang’n home Musky Acres with my BONNIE n of course the Mallard island Marauders Max Power n Fred Tug’r Bear. Mom over for visits n laughs at 91 n just enjoy it all.

So I love fix this. Laugh at that. Turn up the music n cookn on the grill.

We saw the Stones couple times n visit Billy n Frank after Dusty passed n enjoy watching n listen to Elwood Francis fill in an Keep on Rocken!

Try to ride my bike five to ten miles a day. A bunch weekly n rig up 4 hard water pike fish.

I think a lot of guys have similar feelings as I do about their family decisions, they just don't have the balls to admit it.  I do.

 

Regardless, its the path that I chose at the time and now I have to live with it.  There's no one else to blame except myself.

We are all different.  Personally, my two kids have been the greatest joy of my life.  They are unbelievable young adults, way better persons than I ever was.  They put a smile on my face every day and I can't imagine life without them!
