I am new to ice fishing and the aitkin area.  I am wondering what is the best colors and even jigs for walleye and crappies in the aitkin area.   Its my 1st year of icexfishing.  I've always been into open water before.

Welcome to the site. ?

A lot of lakes in the Aitkin area have heavy stain so I’m assuming that’s the water color you’ll be fishing in.

Glow is pretty much your go to in that water.  It can be green, red or pink.  If you go with something flashy; gold, gold, gold.

Rattles don’t hurt either but aren’t super necessary.  In dark water it helps to put something down the fish have an easy time finding.  Don’t be afraid to be aggressive during early ice.  Later in the season in the stained waters the fish can get pretty sluggish due to low oxygen.  Then you have to downsize and slow down.

Glow white has been my go to with either artificial plastic or waxies for panfish. Walleye I'm a fan of hammered gold or hammered silver or glow red if you can find it

Hey Sarg.   Fishing a couple lakes north of Aitkin, crappies on a small jig, tipped with euro larvae.  Electronics are your best buddy also.

enjoy retirement from greystone.

Overall number one bait is a chartreuse forage minnow! I’m probably using that at least 80% of the time!
