I have $50 to spend on Musky lures for a 14 year old boy.  Last fall he caught a nice musky, from my kayak, and was unable to land it to get a picture.  He did get it up to the kayak several times so he got a good look at it and has been bit by the Musky Fishing Bug.  I am looking for suggestions for the young man and was hoping to get some help here.

What got me hooked on musky fishing when I was a kid was topwater. Nothing more exciting than watching the water explode. My first musky came on a rubber frog while bass fishing, my little brother casted over my line and as I lectured him and reeled my line up as quick as I could, WHAM. Since then I have had some of my best memories from topwater. Poe's giant jackpot, prop baits, creepers, klack/buzz bait. He's going to spend a lot of time casting, giving him something to watch helps pass the time and when he gets follows they will normally be shallow so he will be able to see them.

Total agree Topwater mix rules for a kid learning to muskie fish.  Kayak ~~~ At 14 years can by now control the craft & cast pretty well so mix of small to medium size bucktails and a glider or two kick it any time.  Host of things to purchase out there but really no need. Keep it simple, have fun, learn the lake, the fish, the food....he will enjoy it an be hooked for long long time.  And will he succeed ~ YES indeed ~ 96 & 3/4 percent ~  guaranteed.   : )     Keep on rocken!    T

If he is going to fish them from a kayak I would suggest getting him a boga grip that way he can get it out of the water

He will be fishing primarily from a boat in 2018!

A return client for a couple years brought fish grips with him... After watching him mangle a couple fish I asked him not to bring them anymore. Big fish need more care when landing in my experience. I hand land most muskies. This helps with not bringing a green (not ready) fish into the boat to hurt itself and the boat. With musky fishing growing in popularity I'm noticing a lot more fish with net scars from green fish. For a young musky angler learn correct technique early. The scars after a 4 fish day are a badge of honor. One of the best gifts I've received for my musky gear is a good pair of wire cutters. I use them to cut hooks in an emergency or out of a poorly hooked fish. Or if you can find it...a jar of musky slime cologne, my wife loves it. Ha! Good luck

Well, if you want to spend only 50 bucks on a gift, then it's very strange. For example, I would gift a new fishing rod or something else. And I recently learned a lot of information about gift baskets, and it turns out that there can be anything in this basket. For example, different delicious food, items, or even all at once. And that's why I plan to give this gift basket to my mom in two weeks because she will have a birthday, and I want to please her. And to my son with whom we go fishing, I will give him a new fishing rod in a month, and he deserves it!

Went up a day early to take advantage of the nicer weather.  Thursday was a beautiful day on Vermilion; mostly sunny, very light breeze an 41ºF.  Glad I went up that day because the skid house was sitting in 3-8" of water.  Guess I shouldn't have left the house in water and bank snow around it on Monday.  None of the water under the house froze at all.  Decided it would be better to move the house to "new" ice toward the hole I drilled outside on Monday.  When I drilled holes in the new location I had about 1" of water on top of 4" of new ice, then 4" of water, and finally 25" of original ice; 33" total.  I would recommend bringing your auger extension since my Ion auger went past the base auger (32") up to the extension in this location, and you never know what you may find on clear ice (I would stay away from heavy drifts and tall banks because you will probably have lots of water come up on the ice in those locations.  With the house on 4x4 blocks, I switched to the extended bobber to easily see the far hole.  Works great.   The lake looked to be in very good condition if you avoid the drifts and snow banks.  Several pickups were driving on the open ice away from plowed roads and seemed to be moving fine.  I did see several wheel houses being pulled off the lake on Thursday.  Don't know if it was due to ice conditions, poor fishing, or both.  Today (Friday) looks very good to be on the lake (no new snow and all the loose snow has found a permanent home on shorelines or hard drifts/banks.  This weekend is another story.  4-8" of fresh snow on Saturday with 13mph winds.  Drifting is only going to get worse.  Next week looks good with no more snow and cold temperatures to freeze any water/slush that is on top.  The cold temperatures won't freeze the slush under the tall drifts/banks, so be careful.   Fishing was average.  caught a few early morning, a couple around noon, then went 5 hours without catching a thing.  Finally had a fair evening bite when I caught 4 between 4:45 and 6:00.  Finally gave up at 7:10.  Unfortunately all of the fish were quite small (9-14").  I may not find another decent walleye this winter.   Good luck fishing (only 23 days left for walleyes) and be careful around snow drifts and banks.  (Note: I removed all of my blocks and anchors from my original location, and plan to clean up blocks from other people's locations when all the snow melts).
