Anyone fishing?

Have getting some ducks but I have not heard much about fishing lately. I will be turkey hunting this weekend in the afternoons. Let’s call it a combo deer/turkey hunt with the old crossbow.

Lets hear from some of you?

Watch yourself if you are fishing or hunting rivers. We got some heavy rain and things will get crazy.

Hey Moose , sounds like some tough shooting as of late for you at those duckies . Just curious as to what choke you are using ?

If your getting some pretty close shooting (and gauging by your photos you are in those setups), you might want to use an IC (improved cylinder) choke instead.  Spread that pattern out a little more and switch to some smaller shot size with more velocity, especially if you're mostly just shooting as small ducks like woodies.

I almost exclusively use an IC until the calendar turns November, for ducks, pheasants, and grouse.  Later on when you get more shooting at bigger, smarter birds that are on the edge of range you could go back to a modified.

Well this front drove the wood ducks out for the most part. I seen 7 wood ducks and I got one only one shot. Finn made a fine retrieve and made me proud.

Well the divers are around. The little ponds are icing up this means one thing firearms season is here and ice fishing is coming.

I hunted for divers and saw nothing within range. Watch for more reports soon with photos.

Hey Moose my dog looks almost exactly like yours.  5.5 year female british Labrador.  I take her often in the boat fishing and obviously when I duck and pheasant hunt in the fall.

British Lab.JPG

Here's a more recent one.  She use to be fascinated by fish.  Now she doesn't pay much attention to them.

Been diver hunting the last two day what a blast. First day I saw so many ducks and I got a double on goldeneyes.

Then today not many ducks got a hen goldeneye and a merganser

Well deer was the year of enough bucks seen by me and I shot like crazy. If you fall and bump you gun it can be off a lot. I was sick missing with the 06 so I had to use the 223 and never got to use it. I missed a nice 8, a forky, and 5 pointer all 60-100 yards. I did sight my rifle in but slipped walking the woods fell but did not think bumped my gun. Haha it was off 2 feet low and to the right 7 inches. I moved closer to where the deer were coming from so my 223 shots would 50 yards but never had a deer come by then.

I did some pheasant hunting of my own on Fri and Sat near the Princeton area with a friend and did very well.  I think the fact that a lot of standing corn was recently removed played a big role.

Well to all who think the diver ducks taste bad most could not tell the difference. My dad did mention he had some strong pieces of duck in his batch. He said it was great except for the one B.B. I missed. I had some wood ducks, mallards, goldeneyes, and mergansers mixed together in the wild rice hot dish. None of the pieces of duck I had were bad and I did have a piece that was stronger favored but it was not bad.

I grill wood ducks up with a bacon and a jalapeño slice in bite sized pieces. This does just for eating.

Okay to the really issues!! Upland game birds it’s time to get out chasing them. I have my list to get done that the wife left me. Then Finn and I are out to get some birds.

next up ice fishing!! Here is the deal I will be working with Rick G to set a get together for any one who would like to come and pick our brains or just hang out. More details will come as we get this rolling

I've had a few divers in the past and they were noticeably darker/stronger tasting than the grain eaters.  Would I say they were unedible?  No.  But there was definitely a noticeable difference.

Looks like we're gonna get some real winter weather this week.  Everything should freeze solid like concrete.

I went again this past weekend and did well.  Every spot I hunted had birds.  A friend and I went home with 5 roosters in about 4 hours of hunting.

Must not be the spot I though you hunting private?

Went to some public land and the corn was still up earlier the season I flushed a couple each time I was out this time was a bust.

Correct, all the places I hunt are private land.

Well the lakes are locking up. Please watch as the swans and geese kept spots open. The ice around Princeton is sketchy at best, so tomorrow I am headed north to fish.

Always a good day out of the house.  Hey moose, what kind of gun do you have a few grouse pictures back?
    • monstermoose78
Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
