I drove by Baxter and Blue today. Couldn't believe there was a van and a truck that drove out on Blue. Especially with the weather we've had.

Right I had a suv drive by me the ice was bouncing and I thought for sure they were going in. If they would moved off the wheeler trail I think he would have. I found 7 inches west of that trail last weekend.

I just can’t stop buying jigs. I really like jigs with larger hooks for their size. I like sportsman direct tungsten jigs as they run bigger hooks. Where are you all getting your jigs and why?

Moose I love your posts!  A couple questions for you.  Do you fish live bait on the jigs?  I know tungsten is all the rage quick down with small profile, but I watch neutral fish try to suck in the jig and it does not move; wondering if you ever go to a lighter presentation?

I don’t use live bait much if ever anymore. I know I have not bought wax worms or euros in two years at least. If I am fishing at night I will pick up crappie minnows.

If the fish are not sucking in my 4 mm jigs I will grab my 3 mm set up and even the smallest of perch or gills can suck that in. Now if they are being really picky I will go down to the 2mm jigs as well. I also like the pug bug jigs and they are lead but weigh as much as the 4 mm jigs. The reason I like the pug bug is the flat bottom of the jig seems to let it glide down a little slower.

When I take my dad or others out fishing I tell them to get some live bait as getting used to plastics takes time to build your confidence with them. My dad is getting to the point he hardly uses live bait now too but he does have a container of wax worms in his pocket.

one thing I need to get back to is upsizing and using jigging spoons again.

Don’t forget get to trim your plastics as well.

Thank you!  The lake I am on has decent pannies, but its a big lake and they tend to be not close to the cabin where i plop the house for convenience of everyone coming up.  Looking forward to a couple years when I'll have more time to do some exploring for spots and experimenting with jigs and no bait.  I definitely have no confidence with no bait totally impressed with the ability to get them to bite without it!

Ok I cleaned fish then fried fish and now I am beached on the couch. I use a 4 mm gold jig with maki minos in 18-21 feet of water. People around me were complaining the fish were not biting and I agreed 😁! The fish was so good to eat.

We just couldn’t get the bite going today.  Tried shallow and deep.  Sure, we got a few but even sight fishing and using the camera wasn’t much help but to show us how negative the panfish were.

The shallow pike were a little more entertaining.

Hey all...I am a noob ice fisherman and want to be as safe as possible...

The lakes around my area have about 2 feet of ice and the warm weather the past few days has me nervous driving my Ford Ranger on the ice...

I am assuming that I should not be concerned yet BUT I just wanted some reassurance before I go this evening.

*There is no major flow in the lake FYI*

Thanks for any help and sorry if this is asked too much!

Coho Salmon are unlike any fish I've ever targeted. There's not a ton of opportunities to catch these fish through the ice, so to be able to do that makes it that much cooler. Went went out on Lake Superior near Duluth, MN. This was on Sunday. Such a cool experience!

On the south end...  A warm up triggered some nice walleyes and saugers up on Lake of the Woods this week.  A mix of walleyes and saugers with some pike, perch, eelpout and tullibees being caught in 29-33 feet.  Using a bait with rattles or vibration to attract fish is helpful.  On the deadstick, try a glow hook with a live minnow or even a glow bead above the hook.  Set bait 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.  Try gold, glow colors, chartreuse and pink good color choices this week.  Electronics are helpful to show suspended fish as well as how fish are reacting to your presentation.
On the Rainy River...   Morning / evening bite producing some walleyes on the river.  The snowmobile trail on the river from Baudette to Wheeler's Point to the NW Angle staked and groomed.  Use caution and work through a resort, outfitter or gain info from a bait shop as there is current and areas not fit for travel on the river.
Up at the NW Angle...  With the border closure, there are four ways to travel to the NW Angle without crossing the border.  1.  NW Angle Guest Ice Road from south shore up to the Angle.  2.  Snowmobile trails across the lake.  3.  Lake of the Woods Passenger Service (bombardier).  4.  Lake Country Air flying service.
A lot of nice walleyes caught up at the Angle this week with a mix of other species.  Walleyes in 24 - 30' of water.  Some resorts are fishing on or adjacent to structure, others fishing deep mud.  Some resorts are fishing the deep mud.  Some anglers catching walleyes with small jigs tipped with a plastic that mimics bugs and worms in mud.  Plain hook or a glow jig with a live minnow on deadstick.  Communicate with your favorite NW Angle resort for specifics.  Ice fishing on LOW through March.

Hey guys we are all set for our trip to Sand Point May 21, 2021. Plan to fish pike and crappies. I have been going to this lake since 1982 and now have a new generation crew. They have been going 12 years with me. We normally stay in Browns and fish that area and Grassy. We are in King Pin site this year and plan to fish towards Swanson Bay and up and around Wolf Island. Any pointers. Thanks

New rules for purchasing a combination license in MN.
DNR adjusts how married anglers and hunters buy combination licenses
Both members of married couples who want to purchase a combination angling or hunting license in person will need to be present at the sales location starting Feb. 18, when the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will begin requiring both spouses to provide and verify their own complete customer records on file to purchase a combination license.
“These changes will bring the DNR into compliance with state and federal laws that require collecting this information for angling or hunting license sales,” said Steve Michaels, licensing program director. “The information helps prevent licenses being sold to people with violations or unpaid fines.”
Customers will continue to pay the same price for combination licenses, which are discounted compared with purchasing two individual licenses.
When purchasing a combination license in person, both spouses must be present, and, if age 21 or older, also must provide their current Minnesota driver’s licenses or identification cards. If both spouses are not present, the person present may purchase their part of the license and their spouse may obtain their license at a later date at no additional charge.
If a spouse does not have a record on file with the DNR, that spouse can create one with their full name, birth date, social security number. If they are a Minnesota resident age 21 or older, they also will need a current Minnesota driver’s license or current Minnesota identification card. They can create their record anywhere DNR licenses are sold, or call the DNR license center at 877-348-0498 or 651-297-1230 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New resident customer records for people age 21 and over cannot be created online.
“Thank you to all our license purchasers for patience adjusting to these changes and for buying a license,” Michaels said. “Your license dollars pay for a great deal of DNR conservation work and leverage more federal funding that supports hunting and fishing opportunities and habitat work.”
The DNR offers the following married combination licenses:
      Angling, valid for fishing.
Conservation angling, valid for half the possession limit, per spouse.
Sports, valid for fishing for both spouses and small game hunting for one spouse.
Super Sports, valid for fishing for both spouses, small game for one spouse, includes two state trout stamps, and waterfowl and pheasant stamps for one spouse. It also offers the choice of a firearm, archery or muzzleloader deer license for one spouse.
Family nonresident angling, valid for one or both parents and dependent children under age 16.
Also check out the DNR website - https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/licenses/combo.html

On the south end...  Despite te cold weather, some good fishing reports up on Lake of the Woods this week.  A nice mix of walleyes and saugers being caught in 29-33 feet.  The cold weather made some of the fish less active, so coaxing them was key.  Using a jigging line in one hole with lures that put out vibration or noise was helpful.  That combined with a deadstick in your second hole with either a glow jig or plan hook and a minnow.  Keep the jigging line moving to attract fish.  Try gold, glow white, glow red, wonderbread and pink.  Lures that glow, have a glow stick or make noise are effective in the stained water.
Electronics are helpful to show suspended fish as well as how fish are reacting to your presentation.  Some bait shops and resorts will rent units for the day.
On the Rainy River...   Morning and evening bite producing some walleyes on the river.  A variety of areas being fished with low flow and cold temps.
Some resorts are fishing structure, others fishing deep mud.  Jigging with noisy lures 3-4' off of the bottom is a good way to pull in fish.    Plain hook or a glow jig with a live minnow on deadstick.  Some days, the jigging line is hot, others the bobbers are going down.  Communicate with your favorite NW Angle resort for specifics.  Ice fishing on LOW through March.

Just curious how far some of you have walked across a lake to find a fishing spot? I don’t officially know myself, but assume I’ve done 3 or so miles round trip on Mille Lacs looking for tullibee. I’m probably going to try and double that (and more) in search of them again, late in the season. Has anyone traveled via bicycle across ice? I’m considering that too. Oh what we’re willing to do for a fish 🙄 😳🤣

Just out of curiosity, has anyone fished in Texas before, particularly the Dallas/Ft. Worth area? I’ll be down there the week of thanksgiving, and hoping to plan a fishing day.

Originally, I was thinking of going after alligator gar. But it doesn’t sound like November is the greatest month to target them. So I’m leaning towards a multi species outing, with an emphasis on striped bass.

So, just wondering if anyone has been down there and has any guides or resorts to recommend.

On the south end...  A good week of fishing up on Lake of the Woods.  Cold weather is welcomed as the fish houses are warm!  Remember, ice fishing is open through March.  A nice variety of walleyes and saugers being caught in 29-33 feet.  Use a jigging line in one hole and a deadstick with a live minnow in the other.  Keep the jigging line moving to attract fish.  Try gold, glow white, glow red and pink.  Lures that glow or with a glow stick effective in the stained water.
Fish range in size.  A typical day will usually include small fish, eaters, some slots (19.5 - 28" to be released) and even a big walleye over 28" on occasion.  The limit of walleyes and saugers on LOW is a combined limit of 6 fish, with up to 4 of the 6 being walleyes.  Walleyes 19.5 - 28" must be released.  One fish over 28" allowed per day.  Anglers also catching jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, tullibees and every once in a while, a crappie or sturgeon.
Electronics are helpful to show suspended fish as well as how fish are reacting to your presentation.  Some bait shops and resorts will rent units for the day.
On the Rainy River...   Morning and evening bite still the best on the river.
A good week of walleye fishing mixed with perch, eelpout, pike and tullibees.  Walleyes are following their typical pattern, sliding off of structure into that 26 - 30' of water.  As a rule, structure morning / evening and deep mud or rocks during the day.  Ripping Raps or jigging spoons with a rattle tipped with a piece of minnow head or tail working well.  Plain hook or a glow jig with a live minnow on deadstick.  Communicate with your favorite NW Angle resort for specifics.

I don't think anyone will even mess with you no matter how early you head down there. Right now its like a ghost town in the morning. In the summer I have been down there before sunrise to shoot photography and no one has ever said boo to me. I do believe its 6:00 AM on the street and in the parking lots.

I fully agree that lakes go through cycles but that negates nothing I said.  MNs best walleye fisheries are that way because they have a slot.  Rainy, Winnie, Leach, Mille Lacs, and Red were destroyed and the slots brought them back.  Lake of the woods a slot was put in before it got depleted and that fishery is awesome so easy to catch a limit there and a great mix of small fish and jumbos...just a matter of time for other lakes.  Can you be more specific what lakes you are referring to that have just large fish and no slot?  If it is not one of the well known lakes be careful if you name it here its fished out in 3 years if it does not have a slot guaranteed.

      they are a team!!!
    • walleye101
Minnesota's best walleye fisheries are anything but stable populations. These populations are constantly cycling with new robust year classes recruiting to the fishery every few years. Harvest of excess spawning stock actually stimulates frequent strong recruitment. The closest thing we have to stable walleye populations are lakes dominated by old fish with low to moderate recruitment replacing natural mortality from the aging population.
