We got one gadwall yesterday.  Today duck motivation is low.  Clear sky and zero wind right now.  Going back to bed for a couple hours and then off looking for roosters or grouse.  Whatever works.

I raised 4 grouse and 4 deer, and saw about 40 turkeys while I was working on deer stands on Saturday.  There is no shortage of game around the area.

Well it was Sunday fun day with a great friend that used to be on here all the time. We hunted ducks on big water and  boy I hit mostly non ducks mergansers coot were the birds I was crushing. Them mergansers dove on Finn and he struggled to get past the decoys to find the birds. We ended up with a few birds each but should had more it was awesome to sit and bs and watch the musky nuts hightail it out when ducks came in.

The old man found this buck dead by the pond with hole in the guts. The yotes just hit it last night!

Sad when you lose one. Gut shots don't always leave the best blood trail to follow. ☹️

That's to bad Nick it happens. I personally  had one dandy buck of mine I shot bowhunting go through same scenario yotes ate the whole rear quarters over night. Always a fear to back out after a marginal shot that this could end up happening,

I know it happens was just sad to see as my dad passed that buck 5 or 6 times

But a friend is going to trap the yotes off the deer.

Moose is that a yote with an e-collar on its neck?  Wonder what the DNR is doing tracking the movements of a coyote.

No it’s a timber wolf that photo was from the cabin in Grand Marais

Oh gotcha.  Thought it looked more like a wolf to me but didn't think there was any near Princeton.

Last year there was relocation of a pack that was into northern Anoka county on the U of MN cedar creek land. They are a lot further south than most think and have been for quite some time. Several years back when there was a season on them, they were harvested around Mora as the location for tissue and teeth sampling was Cambridge DNRs office and at the time I did some work there and saw hunters bring them in for the samples. I think it's only a matter of time before they are seen in the suburbs since there's not much for predation if any to keep them at bay and a growing population.

My buddy has 80 acres off 47 on the east side of Mille Lacs lake. He had 5 different Timbers on his trail cams 3 weeks before deer season. They still shot a couple deer but they are around a lot closer than people think. Like Leech said until fluffy's start getting eaten nothing will be done. Just practice the three S's and call it a day.

I knew there was a pack as far south as Mille Lacs Lake.  I didn't know they were down by Anoka though.  I thought they needed some heavy timber and most of that ends around Milaca because that's where row crops really start taking over.  Looking at the DNR's website, they have a map of wolf range and the southern boundary is indeed just north of Milaca.  They obviously have a large range so one could easily stray further south than that too.

Its amazeing the number of predators moveing more and more south. I own a 40 in Pine river have a few bears in the area which aren't a problem yet.  One year couple years back  I had 3 timbers in it thought here goes my deer population luckily they moved on and haven't seen them since.  Hear the horror stories of hunters with land with existing wolf poulations and its sad.   But as the population keeps explodeing there territorys will expand for sure so unfortunately in the future we will start to see them more and more central and southern mn.

They can move in and out of their normal range in just one day or two and then back.

"Wolves are long-distance travelers. They may travel 10 to 30 miles in one day to hunt. They often maintain a steady trot, averaging about 5 miles an hour. When chasing prey, they can sprint at 25 to 35 miles an hour"

Well please don’t drive on the ice with more than a wheeler or snowmobile. The bite has been good with the stable weather. Remember downsizing it’s been paying off for me so far. I normally like to up size but that has not been good for me. I watched lots of anglers struggle to land fish.

Anyone else been out? I was last weekend and did great both days. Saturday was catch release day Sunday was harvest day for much needed fish fry.

I really like the 3 mm sized jigs with the bigger hook on them. Plastics are what use 90% of the time. I am trying all kinds of plastics but what still works is the maki mino and northland mayfly. I just found some other cool stuff and I will try it out soon.
