Where's Rick at? Figured he'd be all over this thread by now!

He's been working on the east coast and whatnot. Said something about being on some ice this weekend though. I think he mentioned that he was going basically straight from the airport to the lake....

Lol..... yep, will be making my first trip out on Sat grin

Well it is about time lol. I would like to get out also send me a pm if you want some company

Is there enough ice to drive a wheeler from the winter access to the meth hole? Where do you guys park when you go out there?

Posted

I only had 5-6" of Ice where I was on the meth hole. I'd be careful driving a wheeler, we walked out so it wasn't a big deal for us

Posted

Plenty. Icertainly is a about 8"

Were you the group that was right next to the hole? We set up between the red shack and that blue one with the generator, and we had between 8 and 9 inches measured. There's some variability apparently, but measuring over 8 in spots and taking the variability down to 6 into consideration, my opinion is that there's plenty for snowmobile traffic.

Another good day out there. Slow going until after dark, then lots of fish on the sonar but no bites on the liver we had. Got some minnows from some friendly neighbors after maybe close to an hour of not a single bite, then immediately hammered 9 straight in a half hour or so, then it slowed again. Switched back to liver and started hammering them again. Ended with 27. Adam outfished me by 4, I think.

Where do the people that are walking on park? Or to take a wheeler can you park on 22 anywhere near the winter access?

Posted

Nice to see you and Adam out there, Brian. We were glad to share some of our minnows in exchange for hauling our stuff. I'd say your generosity trumped ours. smile

We had more or less the exact same report. Early on, minnows were the only thing they'd hit. After a while, the rod with liver--that I hadn't even looked at for half an hour--almost got pulled into the hole. From then on, they only wanted liver.

There were at least 15 trucks on hwy 22 when I got there at 4:15 lined up and down the road by the winter access. Probably 10 on the west side, 5 on the east. It'll be obvious when you get there. In the narrow section where you actually pull onto the lake there are 'no parking' signs, but further to the north it's clear of signage and plenty of folks parked there. Never had an issue, personally.

Very nice day to be on the lake smile light wind, warm sun and active fish made for a great outing.

Found between 7-8in of ice where we were. Only an inch or two of snow on top makes getting around pretty easy.

It took a little time before we found a good pod of fish today, we searched out the 22-35 ft depths. Found our best numbers in 28ft, most fish came in well off the bottom. My old standby, the 1/16 Frostee was what I had on, minnow heads seemed to be working just fine wink lost personal count on cats around 15, likley got a dozen or so more after that. Best bite was just after dark, couldn't keep up with one line grinfull-26589-51693-20141129_154028.jpg

I'm going to be heading out Thursday or Friday for my first time cattin' through the ice. I got a couple questions that have probably been asked a million times, so I apologize ahead of time.

How far of a drag is it from the winter access to the Meth hole area? Is there any sketchy areas on the way out to look out for?

What's the best/most convenient place to get minnows on the way up from the cities?

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

Nice report, Rick. Sounds like you were on the fish, as usual. Picking up where you left off last spring, I see.

LOL. If my flasher doesn't work I go home. I'm too weak to fish blind.

I've comboed the flasher battery for double duty in the past.

Good to see you got out. I was looking for a report but apparently I was in the HSO cattin the chain thread, and not the FM cattin the chain thread. What was I thinking. Now I'm gonna go check on the "outdoor minnesota" thread and see if there are any reports up yonder.

Ha yeah I must have been on the other forum too. smile I did however just read about a great bite up there tonight on FB.

Made it out horseshoe tonight and last night. The catfish bite was phenomenal to say the least. Got a nice fat 8 pounder last night. What a fun fight that was! Had a solid 7-8" all the way from the winter access to the meth hole. Had a double tonight in the house by myself. Fished from about 4 until my headlamp went dead(about 7). Vexilars was lit up the whole time with fish.

Posted

Yep, those fish have been super goofy this year. How a catfish can tell, at 25 feet down in fairly stained water, the color of my fishing jersey, I have no idea.

Super bite last night. Nice to have active fish working. Set up on fish, packed up 4 hours later with fish still under me. Dropped a hemostat on them and they didn't seem to mind. Fresh fathead and liver, didn't seem to matter. Had best luck with a wide gap tungsten jig.

Hoping to get out this weekend for some cats. Are you guys catching them around meth hole? I'm thinking about walking out from the 22 bridge and fishing that area. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔

I'm blaming leech... his food selection has been lacking game days recently  🤣
