Picked up 5 or 6 besides those pictured that were low slotters in that 20-22 range also Boar, did'nt take pics of those too busy re-baiting. Did'nt bother with pic of very first slotter which was another a 25'r.

The smalls and eaters were biting crazy as well. I never did start up my jig/abacus system of counting but the total was up there, easy 40 anyhows and I went thru a pile of minners. 3 of them big Perches will hit the fryer this afternoon. And yes I had to get the token green slimey and oh so stinky because the DB was'nt with!

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday alot tougher than Sunday with the big numbers and all those slot fish hammering down. Wind had 180'd overnite and it was darn near flat calm at 3pm then picked up about 4 blowing about 10-15mph from the West. Water temp 1.5 cooler at 46. The spot I've been fishing works on all winds but a S, SE or E are usually best. Air temp was about 15 degrees cooler than Sunday and the fish were down there belly to the bottom but just plain not snappin. I did manage round about 25 maybe 30 light biting fish most were 10-14 with some decent keeps thrown in the mix. DB got maybe about 15 or so of the same caliber. I was using some live Shiners and DB the frozen models and keeping the bait as still as possible was about the best tactic. Keith took home his 6 fish limit of nice 16-17 inch eaters. We coulda easily boxed up another limit like those no prob but I've eaten my share the past couple weeks no doubt. Rain started up about 5pm and by 530 the breeze picked up a tad more and the rain then was coming down pretty hard so we called it quits at primetime with the fish going pretty good at that time but we fish pretty often and it was getting miserable with the rain and chilly late afternoon temp. I did get 1 fatty around 23-24 inches late and that was it for bigger fish.

That might be it for October trips this fall, maybe Halloween day iffin the forecast holds true but I'm ready for the Walleyes and winds of November. Not a boat in sight yesterday outside of 1 Tyee that ran in from afar about 5pm.

All in all a worthwhile trip most likely wrapping up another great October on the west end of the pond.

Thanks for the great reports Norm! Fun to see all those big, beautiful Lake of the Woods walleyes! wink

I'll be hunting North Dakota feathers for the rest of this week, but will be up to the lake as soon as I get home!

I have a bad connecter on my trim switch that comes loose sometimes when the pond is bumpy so I had to stop one evening on the way in to fix it quick. Now I am a Phisherman not a fotogragher but howsabouta scenic shot?

From a nite they were snappin so good I ran outta bait and had to come in a bit early before the sun went down.

Evening of the 23rd.

Sweet fish andawsome sunset and freinds an few brews and its the best of times. Nice job!

Norm it is cool you would mention that the SE or E wind is best in your good spot. Over the last few years I have noticed the same thing, give me a 10 mile an hour SE breeze and I know the fishing will be good before we even get going. The other thing that I like to see in the fall is flat calm, doent happen often but when it does it can be special.

Interesting observation guys. Of course we all know the old adage about an easterly wind and fishing, but I too have noticed this doesn't always apply on LOTW.

Norm, thanks for the well wishes. Whether we pile up birds or not it's going to be a fun weekend. I'm taking my 3 sons (son-in-law to be) out to the old family farm for 4 days of bird hunting. This will be the youngest boy's first real hunt, so we should have a great time.

It's a pretty amazing part of the country, the North Dakota Prairie Pothole region, and personally I just love spending time out there. Having all my boys with will make it just that much sweeter!

Good luck to all this weekend! I'll report back upon our return.

Oh yeah. I'd say you're fotographee work is just dandy! Seen a LOT of really beautiful sunsets over the last few weeks. Looking forward to those gorgeous prairie sunsets this weekend! wink

Well it appears I didn't miss much over the last week. What's going on?

The weather sure doesn't look too friendly for open water fishing over the next week or so, but I just can't seem to bring myself to put the boat away just yet.

Who knows what was missed ! Brrr been cold and nasty most all week. I did get out Monday afternoon for a bit. Slow slow slow, got maybe 10 or 12 smalls. Highlite of the day was a 19 inch Sauger.

Water temp Monday was 41, The Thursday prior it was still 47-48.

I really hate to say it Norm, but it's not looking good.

Wind is freakin' howling out there right now, and it's supposed to get WORSE overnight! Don't see much for temps above freezing thru the coming week.

We might be done. frown

I moved the boat down alongside the barn to get her out of the forecasted 50+ mph winds, but it's looking like she might just have to be stored away now.

I guess all we can do now is hope the lake freezes up without the water being too stirred up with these ridiculous winds.

Used to be I could fish most of the way through November. This is the 3rd year in a row that wind and cold has messed this up. I am waiting one more weekend before I pull the plug and winterize every thing.

I looked the forecast for this week and daytime highs in 20s and lows in the teens will really cool things off to near ice in a hurry.

Wow!

Yeah, Curt. I was saying the same thing to some buddies in church this morning. I'm usually the last to store the boat away, but it looks like we're wrapped this year. The forecast doesn't look to bright for open water fishing.

I've been out on the water thru the Lion's share of the last two Novembers (well only a couple times last year), but this year I think I'm done till we've got safe ice. It's a tough pill too swallow. I love that late fall bite, but it ain't in the cards this year. Oh well. whistle

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

If you stop by Kramer lake on 38 north of Rapids someone made a chair out of a hospital commode and a lunch tray. Been there for 20 years.
