Nope. I'm here Fisky. Just don't have a whole lot to report. Pretty much the same results others here have already posted.

Got out on Friday and fished the "bowl", right in Lighthouse Gap, just outside the Gap, and out in the lake at 19, 26, and 29 feet. Caught a couple limits of fish right in the channel.

Moved into the "church" and had a couple slot fish on, but they came unbuttoned pretty quickly.

Next morning we buzzed up to Birchdale and hunted grouse till noon. Put three ruffies in the bag, then dropped the boat in at Nelson Park. Dragged cranks for an hour and caught a couple extraordinarily bad smelling pike. Switched to jigging shiners and found a few decent fish in the deep edge of the main channel.

Fishing was pretty slow, but I kinda expected that with the weather we had last week. It'll get better. I won't be cleaning and winterizing my boat until ice starts to cover the landings. wink

You wanna head out sometime Fisky?

Sounds like you had a grand weekend. For sure we should try and get out sometime.

Yesterday evenings report.. Same spot as last friday west side of the pond in 21fow where fingers of sand reach into the mud. Beautiful weather, dropped anchor about 3pm. The bite don't start here till 430 sharp!! Crazy good bite 530pm till dusk. To nice of a day so had to fish alone yesterday but then you're never alone with a scizophrenic. Went thru 2 bags just me myself and I. Not as many slotters as friday only got 4.. A coupla low 20's with a 27 and a 25 coming back to back about 615. Couple dozen eater size fish and a dozen or so dinkers and 4 or 5 Perch. Pretty much every school that came thru would have biters. Kept 2 for supper.

Meeting up with Dirtball about 1pm this afternoon so we'll have a bit of a wait b4 they get to snapping. We get a few biters early in the afternoon on this spot but it's 430-5 before they really get going good. Gonna be a bit bumpy in my little boat and I'm 1/2 tempted to head for the river but it'll be a warm wind, it's a short boat ride and the fish will be snappin'. NOAA wave forecast not to bad looking where I'll be but I'm thinking it'll be a tad windy for me to anchor down backward so we may swing a tad more than I like and more than the fish like.. we'll see ??

Surely my boat will be re-stinkified by Dirtball as he is now Mr.StinkyPike.. I think he pulled 5 of those slimeys out there on Friday. Funny have'nt seen a Burbot yet as the past coupla falls we seem to get one or two each trip out here.

Tic toc tic toc is it 430 yet !!

Regards.. Norm

Norm,

You've noticed it too! What the heck is going on with the pike stink this year? I caught a decent little 5 lb fish at Birchdale on Sat. The fish was clean, healthy, and thick, but it was absolutely foul with pike stink!

With the lake staying fairly cool all year this year I wouldn't have expected the pike to get SO stinky, but there's sumpthin goin' on out there that has got em' just foul?!?! Weird.

Good luck today. Be careful. The wind is supposed to get pretty strong and gusty today. You might wanna consider putting in at Morris so you don't have far to ditch outta the wind if it gets really rough.

No need to go east anymores than I am till they start flooding up the river. I don't like to feed all those puney Saugers over thatta way so I'll stay to the west and save ten beans-worth of bait and 20 in fuel !! Boat ride out pretty short and I gotta go slow anyways as my fishing bud today is so old he farts fossills !!

We might get a little sloppy spray but thats why we got that Goretex stuff eh !!

Hmmm yesterday a bit different. Got anchored down about 2pm and the fish were biting, 90% of them were fat little 13 to 15 inch wallys biting with reckless abandon and a few 11-12 inch Perch, Keith also managed 1 low slotter and he got his token Stinkfish, which was fortunatly the only 1 of the day.

Wind blowing pretty good but the waves were not as bad as I thought they'd be and I was able to set the spike out the back of the little boat. The wind really slacked about 420 and so did the bite. Round 530ish the wind shifted 20-30 degrees came up a bit but rather light outta the sse shifting my boat position from transition area to solid hard bottom. After 20 mins or so with nothing over this sand/gravel I yanked the spike moved about 3-4 boat lengths back to the spot and dropped the navy anchor on a short rode. for 10-15 mins we sat with nada thinking the wind switch monkeyed the bite but they did turn on for the last 45 mins of light and I managed to toss back a few shorts and 1 low slotter, boxed an 18. Keith tossed a few shorts, boxed a real nice brownfish and also pulled another three 2 footers and a very round 27 right before sunset.

Between the 2 of us we knocked off 3 bags of minners. I got a few fish on some plastic as well.

Weather looking great for mid week coming up.. Yippeeee !

Was good just about anywhere in front of Pine on Thursday, from Morris gap down to the Lighthouse gap. Friday in the wind, I did not fish but no one I talked to did any good. Today was nice out and there were people scattered all over the lake. Caught a few in front of the gap this morning and then went grouse hunting. Sounded like it was better along Pine and to the west. Planning on going out again tomorrow.

Seems the lake is in a constant state of recovery. Wind blows crazy hard out of the NW for 2 days stirring everything up then it takes a half a day to settle down and the fish get right back to it.

Last couple of times out the fishing was pretty slow in the best hot spots we have in the morning but by mid day things pick up and go pretty good. We are fishing by Long Point. I know the water cleans up faster in the gaps further east so the recovery time is quicker. Over all it has been plenty decent so far out in the lake.

I hear you, Curt. The wind has made it tough this year.

What do you mean windy ? The wind was fair to me again this afternoon!! For sure she's been mean to the weekend warriors this fall but my gosh what a sweet October so far. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come 'cause I really don't want another winter like last year.

A bit more fickle of a bite tonite, most were really lite. Dropped anchor about 3pm quit about 630 and I only caught 31 fish between 5 and 24 iches with a half dozen really nice Perch mixed in there.

No stinkfish in the net today. Still not one Burbot has hit the net yet this fall... Wierd ??

The DB was getting his share of fish as well using live Fatheads and Dace tonite including big fish of day at 25 inches and big Perch of the day at 14.

Windy again tomorrow it sounds !!

Well, I was starting to think I should give it one more last hurrah on Saturday, but after the winds being out of the south all week with what sounds like great fishing, of course on Saturday they turn WNW and kick into high gear and it cools off. Of course I can tuck in behind Long Point, and thats the area I like anyways, but gusts to 32mph doesnt sound like a fun day on the lake or river. Figures. MIght have to wrap it up for the year.

Last nites report.. WOW ! Fished 3 till 630, I did'nt get huge numbers but the little fish were'nt around either. I did get 11 fish in the slot to 26 inch. A limit of 6 really nice eaters with 2 big Perch thrown in. About a half dozen more eater sized thrown back and a few shorts. Highlite of the nite was a ginormous Crappie just a hair shy of 15 inches, a rare catch over here on the westside of the pond.

Posted

Very cool Fisky. There have been some Crappies around this fall. I would like to get one or two

I do have some pics and I'm trying to get the wife one of these days to load them from camera to puter for me. No pics of me holding anything though.. They gotta be specials, Wallys that is and 24's-27's pretty run of the mill eh!

Was all alone again last nite so all I have are floor/net shots!

Gonna have that Boar charecter along this afternoon so I'll snap some pics of him.

I can get some of them Crappies around the Muskeg in the spring when they're doing their spawn thing but this was my first over on this end during fall. They do pop up eastside now and then thru the seasons.

Im not very photogenic. Unless im hold a fish and getting my hair just right.

Ya man great finally get'n to meet up and do a bit of fishing. Way to many winters I wanted to get over to the 'Boars nest on ice' whether it was E or W and meet and it just did'nt work out. My loss.

All things considered we did okay. I managed the one slotter, that big Sauger and a 6 or 8 other smalls thru the evening. You got quite a few smalls and your way small also, 2 slots anyhows, and one of the XL Perch, maybe both of 'em. Keither got a few up front there too. Got to send ya home with what 3 eyes 2 saugs and 2 Jumboes so that made a decent bag of fillets anyhows. We could of boxed 3-4 more smallish keeps anyways early in the afternoon but we had high hopes only to be foiled by ma nature eh!! We never snapped pics of the BIG Perches did we? Lets not forget the coupla green and Slimey's to tangle things up on the windy side of the boat too!

Was so weird after we did the run into marina for clothes the wind had dropped enough to let us get anchored down nice and backward right on the spot eh and pick up a couple in that ten 15 minute window.. Only to see the wind then really whip up and pummel us for the rest of the evening. The folks out there fishing in the Ranger boogied shoreward, and after 15 mins or so of reposition and adjustment we managed to get re-anchored out a bit more east with the spike/chain and about 160 foot of rode.

Don't think we snapped any pics when the wind was really bad. The waves went from capping to near breaking for a while there and we were really swinging with all that rope out the front eh. Bobbing around pretty good too in the little boat and big waves we were. Poor Keith up in the front of the boat was really bobbing up there. Hbird showing us doing swings to and fro of near a hundred feet with the boat fishtailing eh. Relentless it was! Relentless the word of the day.

So you were the hot stick towards dusk.. Was it the N side of the boat? Sheer luck lol! That sweet custom rod of yours? Dem crazy jiggin skills! Maybe that special color I like so much and was also using earlier that got 'em? They were'nt snappin my blue one late in the day thats for sure!

Glad you had a fun one in the little boat with the wicked winds we had. For sure iffin you can sneak away be it mid week or weekend give a shout and we will do it again. Watch the weather and that NOAA mariners wind and wave forecast now and then and hopefully you can make it spur of the moment when the pond is not so angry next time! Seems any planned trips I make are somehow always foiled by the weather. Fall is my favorite time of year to fish up here and I'm real flexible at the moment as far as when to go so if something comes up and your schedule allows an afternoon be it weekday or weekend give a shout anytime man.

That river over there should get going good real soon and there the wind is not quite the problem that it can be on the lake, so that could be an option also. But we know the fish were under us and they stick around so I'd like to get ya out there when it's a bit more uh, easy shall we say.

Thanks for coming over and sharing the boat Boar, twas my pleasure.

Regards....Norm

Yes sir, already looking at the wifys schedual. When the cats away boarmouse will play. I see i need to preview my phone posting. My classic boar misspelling had led to near jibberish. Call it speaking with thumbs.lol! Gona put those perch on the board for tru measurement but for certain well over 13" if deer season ends quick for boar and the boarlits. Is that to late?

Posted

It won't be to late until we got that frozen water on top. Deer season timframe my favorite next to Oct 22 which was a complete no-go this year due to foul wind/weather. Pic of one of our doubles from the 20th. Keith with his 14 inch Perch he told ya 'bout last nite and a low slotter about 20 or so I got at the same time.full-108-50392-p1010082.jpg

A bit nicer looking weather and sea state that day eh, not quite as warm though!

I moved the clips on the jet needles up to the top groove to lean it out.  This eliminated the mid-range bog and the sled accelerates well even when warm.  The plugs are not quite dark now, but look good.  I'll have to rebuild the Mikuni carbs this summer for the permanent solution.  I'll also repair or replace the primary clutch to eliminate that issue.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.

No.  I tried posting a 15 second video a while back in the accepted MP4 format and it wouldn’t play.  It sucks.

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place by some hardcore ice anglers, but most have called it a good year.  For those still getting out on the ice, fishing has been good.  Most resort ice accesses have been closed for the year.  Safety first always.   Ditches are running along the south end of the lake which means water is running into the bays.  Moving water will soon pop open the bays and anglers will be out open water targeting huge pike while they head to spawning areas.  Pike fishing is year round on Lake of the Woods and can be excellent during the spring in back bays. On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing began over a week ago and has started out very good with some big walleyes being caught and released!     As of April 8th, the Rainy River is open to the west of Baudette and gaining every day.  With warm temps in the weekly forecast, not only will the ice deteriorate quickly, but the walleye bite should get even better.  Weather forecast in the next week shows 60's.   There are three boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) and the Vidas boat ramp just east of Clementson and the Rapid River.     Most walleye anglers are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  Some are slowly drifting a jig with a minnow such as emerald shiners, fatheads or rainbows.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  A sturgeon rig is about an18 inch leader with a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers and emerald shiners.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.  There are many areas showing open water primarily where there is current.  Progress to open water is being made.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.
