I was much more excited about the Gophers win over Iowa until I took a look at Iowa's schedule. That has to be the easiest schedule in the Big 10.

Nice win against a team that had dominated the Gophers last couple of years.

Kind've nice to see that their 2 trophy games this year have both been their easiest wins. 3 times a charm against Wisconsin perhaps? Winning both trophies in the same year for the 1st time since 1967! That is truly amazing! Gotta enjoy this one to the fullest though, because I don't see any realistic chance of the gophers beating Ohio State next week frown

Its possible the gophers bring home the jug, the axe and Floyd all in the same year.
2/3 of the way there. What a convincing win yesterday. Just bottle that up and repeat. :-)

We have 3 of 4 trophies, not? Don't we have the one between us and penn st also?

They did have a trophy with Penn State until the Gophers got a little over excited................... grin

Wow, they certainly made a game of it! Aside from a win, they did more than I had hoped for. Perfect football weather! A loss is a loss, but if there is anything positive out of this, it was the fact they were able to capitalize on turnovers. Feel better about their chances against Wisconsin and Nebraska.

Make that FG in the first half and the end of the game gets more interesting for sure. Not blaming the kid because it was a 52 yarder man he's got a leg.

A legimate D1 qb would be licking his chops at the clown show neb and wisc are putting on. Wish we had one. Rodents lose out and continue to be a waste of our tax dollars.

Field goal? How bout the fact our quarterback does a better job of throwing it to the defense than he does our receivers. Just give us a decent D1 quarterback and this is a very good team, but Leidner is just awful.

Another game of qb's. Imagine how good we would be the next few years with Barrett.

We were outplayed badly, poor QB (but he's the best we have) and line play, but managed to make a game of it. Two more tough ones coming up, hope we can get the 'huskers!!

I think David Cobb is licking his chops at the chance to face Nebraska's defense (I use the term defense lightly of course). Single game rushing record for gophers is 294 yards. Perhaps? whistle

I disagree with the poor line play comment. Most of Cobb's yards came up the gut and he wasn't running through tackles - he had holes. While we didn't do a great job on stopping Barrett, part of that was also the all-out scheme the Gophers were running defensively.

It was a great game to watch and a good measuring stick for Minnesota. It showed the QB and WR are the real shortcomings on the team. While our rookie defensively linemen are doing well, I'd like to think we'd have contained Barrett even better had we not lost our three starting DLinemen to ACL tears in Week 1.

Regardless, a good game for the team.

Kind of wishing I didn't give away my tickets to the game. Despite the loss it would have been a fun game to attend. Guess I was just tired of sitting in the cold after hunting the bulk of the week.

Honestly I was expecting the gophers to do the typical gopher thing and get steam rolled after playing well enough leading into the game to build up they hype a little.

Next two weeks are going to be interesting in the big ten west the Gophers still control there own destiny, would have been nice to have one of these last two games at home. Nebraska certainly looks beatable after this weekend. Wisconsin looked awesome, have to find a way to slow there running game down and you have a chance because they aren't going to beat you throwing the ball.

Might lose the last two might not, the Illinois game might very well keep them out of the Big ten championship game which would mean facing Ohio state in a dome on a fast field, not something I might want to see anyway, LOL.

I think that we have a better chance of beating Wisconsin than Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are still a good team and beating them on the road when they are likely to rebound is a tough prediction. I agree with you swampman, that Wisconsin is more beatable because of their lack of balance. I think that we can stop good running games but not talented enough to stop truly balanced teams like Ohio State, unless we play perfect football which we don't do yet.

I checked the strength of schedule in the Top25 poll. Wisconsin had the toughest SOS followed by the Gophers. It's actually amazing how soft a schedule many of the top teams have had in comparison. No doubt they are still really good teams though.

We'll see if Cobb can continue to expose the Cornhusker run defense this Saturday. Does anyone know of a decent place in the metro that will show the game (ESPN) this weekend that might also be 3-year-old kid friendly. She likes bars but the more kid-friendly the more I get to watch the game.

Most of the Champs locations closed in the last year or so. At least the few near me did.

I'm going to my brother-in-law's place now, so thanks for the suggestions.

So will the Gophers continue to exploit the rush defense or do they get their two WR's back and find a way to balance out their offense.

Let's hope the football Gods are looking out for us in Lincoln today, we could use a few breaks. A win today. although unlikely and a bowl victory would make for a great season. But I'm saying there's a chance!!

Just heads up, if you haven't already heard.  Camp Ripley youth hunt has been cancelled for 2020.  Public hunts will not have a lottery, information and purchase dates will be released in August.  This allows for a easier cancelation of the hunts.   Thanks Covid.

Just got back from vacation to the area.  Fishing was good.  Water temps are higher than I have experienced before in the area upper 70 to low eighty's in the mornings with them rising in the mid heat on the surface. We fishes mostly smaller bodies of water and I was very surprised at how shallow we found most fish.   The walleye bite was fantastic in 10-16ft of water.  Almost all fish were relating to the deep weed edge.  Northern milfoil was #1 and cabbage #2 as far as cover preference.  Cabbage relating fish were caught with spinners long lined with 1/4oz bullet sinkers pulled at .7 to .9 mph.  Milfoil fish were caught with slip bobbers.  Another surprise with these fish was that 70% or so we're caught between noon and 5 pm.   Bluegills are located in similar areas.  Some what shallower.  Leeches under a bobber or Lindy rigs caught most of the gills.  Somedays they were more difficult to find then others but when you found them, you caught very nice fish.   Bass fishing usually is low on our target species, however we did find a number of very nice fish relating to offshore bait clusters in deeper water, 20 to 22 ft.  These fish were turned by jig worms or drop shot rigs, electronics were key here.  Reed beds in shallow is where the bulk of our shallow bass showed.   Northern pike were few this past week, the ones we caught were smaller and bite on crawler harnesses fishing for walleye.

Try lakes with motor restrictions. Fewer recreational boaters to dodge, and less fishing pressure as well. Here is a list of waterbodies in the state with restrictions by county: https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/regulations/boatwater/local_regs.pdf

I’ve fished this lake one week a year, at the end of July, for the last 8 years.  We stay at Timber Bay Lodge and I have fished the SE part of the lake, all the way up to the Stony River. I almost solely target walleye.  I say almost because I will fish bass or northern at times for fun.  I’ve yet to target crappie on this lake and this year will be the first. I’ve caught a handful of big crappie by accident on this lake.  I’ve heard they are in there.  For walleye, I’ve typically used Lindy Rig with crawler or leech, and Jighead with a minnow. I typically tie a 3-5 ft leader, red hook, gold bead, 1/4 oz weight. If the wind and waves kick up I’ll use 1/2 ounce weight.   I’ve often used a worm harness with gold or silver spinner too.  Sometime I’ll throw crankbaits and that can the ticket. If I’m covering a flat I’ll use lindys or harnesses, if I’m hitting specific points and structures I’ll use a jighead.  I’ve had the best luck in 8ft to 14ft but every year is different.  For the record, I’ve never caught a huge walleye on this lake.  I’ve caught countless eaters.  But I’ve yet to connect with many big ones.  I know they are in there.  It seems like each year the fish are hot in June to mid July.  Since we go at the end of July, we can be in the doldrums of Summer, so perhaps this is why Ive missed many big ones.  There’s also a chance I’m targeting the wrong areas.  Who knows.  As for areas, I’ll typically target shorelines that have been hit by the wind for the day, or previous day.  If I work an area for 15-20 min with little results, move on.  I’ve experienced the fish stacking up on very specific points before too.  If a point is holding fish, don’t be afraid to drift a small area and use your motor to return to the starting point, over and over.  I’ve done this many times and limited out in an hour.  One thing I have noticed is that the walleyes don’t seem to be active in the early morning.  In fact, the best action I’ve seen has been 10am to 1pm, and 6pm to 9pm.  I’ve never fished after dark. I have fished as early as 6 am on this lake and do not connect with the walleyes.  I’m guessing it’s due to the dark water and low visibility.  I hope this has been helpful and welcome other advice.  If anyone would like to add or refute, feel free.  This has been my experience on this lake and I’m welcome to hear other tactics,  I’d also love some advice on the crappie.  Where and what time of day?  Best of luck on your trip.

We're heading to the East side of Rainy, boat camping next week. Just curious if the walleyes are on the reefs and what baits are being used? Any updates would be appreciated.

Muskies-  Any advice on a good place to stay on Rainy? Was supposed to stay on Canadian side this week and obviously didn’t go. So now I am trying to put together a quick trip with my Dad on MN side maybe later this month instead...
