I'm not very good at fly fishing or casting. Looking for some good places in the area to try and maybe what to use.

Lions pond up by the college. Hiniker pond or spring lake in lower north. Good luck!

Don't worry about fishing until you dial in your casting. Clip the hook off a fly and throw a frisbee in the yard. Cast to it and try to land the fly on it. When you do walk over and throw it again. Different angles, wind, etc. good practice and you might even get the neighbors ditch cougar to strike! Then go hit the gills and small bass- also great practice and fun.

I've always said "Don't worry about casting, go catch 'gills"

Boat, canoe, kayak, or from shore? It can make a difference. If you have a kayak or canoe, knock out every lake and pond in your area, a new one every weekend or whenever you are able to get out. A short roll cast or overhead cast is all you need for bluegills, in warmer weather they are bold enough to swim feet from a canoe chasing a nymph or small popper.

There are panfish in just about every pond or lake in MN, just pick a random one and give it a try.

Any of the lakes around you, Madison has a lot of places. Just walk into the water and cast alond the shoreline. A black ghost will work for Crappies. Just about anywhere yellow for sunfish.
