I was not on horseshoe, but I was thinking of fishing the chain. I think I'll try lake trout around brained first.

i love pelican lake. Way more fishermen the duck hunters. It will be a shame if its drained, we have caught alot of meals out of that lake. If they drain it give it 5 yrs it will be back to normal depth and full of fish again. But we all now how people in power love to blow money!

I had thought Pelican could be a win-win, Bring in a dredge to pump slit and mud bottom into shallower areas. Making areas 1 1/2-3ft deep, then seed this area with rice, NO ACCESS in this area for 5yrs, to get rice to really grow in. Quicker way to get food going for the ducks, Could start bringing in ducks faster, they need food to hold them for fall. Transfer in freshwater shrimp from devils Lake, divers love the shrimp.

If the lake is just drained every body loses, sure fish are killed off. But water bought down to low to duck hunt. Causing a lack of food the in the mean time, still not enough cover areas for how many years. Lack of food ducks will not stay. I can think of many areas that can be made into shallower bays. adding duck cover with a single year. Some of this could be started within 1 month after ice leaves in spring. pump sludge into areas until ice up in fall. The lake could also go through some draw down. With all this done at the same time, effects for ducks can be done sooner. Which can improve duck habitat, fisherman can still fish the deep water. The deeper water can help lessen the slit stirring up off the bottom. Turning the water into a murky mess, where nothing can grow. The deep water can help the fishing, and clear up the lake.

Also set the whole lake as no wake. If boat is creating white water behind it, it's going to fast.....

Check out Willmar lake, was once a shallow lake to deep for ducks, to shallow for fish. How anglers can fish for good size fish, ducks have nesting areas. Due to being in city limits no hunting, but the lake makes for a resting area which supplies duck for other lakes around area.

Just a thought to quicken the duck habitat.

I personally think its a stupid idea. The ducks have moved west already. I dont get why anyone would want to destroy a great lake to bring your kids to catch fish. Any time you go out there your going to catch something. Oh well in a few yrs we will all be out there again catching fish after it fills back up. Then we will be having this same discussion again about how there gonna drain it again so the ducks come back lol

NOT> But we can take the kid duck hunting for 4-5 weekends in the fall. Who gives a cr*p about kids, The old farts want it their way now. Its just to bad we can't find away to do both on one of the largest lakes in Wright county. A great duck and Goose lake in the fall. Yet have a relatively good fishing lake, without being wrapped around walleyes. Bass and Pike for big biters, Crappies and Gills for panfish. I still think doing a dredge and making the lake no wake during the open water season. For all anybody really knows this has been a good fishing lake for over 100years. Its just now days we have access to ways of getting to the fish.

I agree, it can be so much more. It will have decent fishing in the future, but because of the lower water level (winter kills) it will never have the panfish like it used to, or the pike it has now.

Reversing the trend of wetland degradation in Minnesota.

The Feds have not spent all the money to buy property around the lake for nothing.

The opportunity to restore a large shallow wetland with suitable upland nesting cover of this scope is unprecedented in Wright County.

This is a grand opportunity to be a showcase for wetland restoration. The opportunity needs to be fully pursued.

I say add water and make it deeper!!! Get bigger and better panfish and more northern out there. Its far big enough to hunt ducks and fish. Which ppl do right now. No reason to waste money just to make it a water fowl only lake. It brings in ppl from all over during the ice fishing season which really helps the local businesses also.

Winter conditions prompt liberalized fishing on Wright County’s Pelican Lake

The early onset and bitter cold of winter 2013-14 have combined to make some shallow lakes susceptible to winterkill, prompting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to open Pelican Lake in Wright County to liberalized fishing until sunset on March 9.

Winterkill conditions are created when sunlight is unable to penetrate the ice, and oxygen levels in the water drop. Fish are often unable to survive in these low-oxygen conditions. Such lakes are opened so the public can make use of these fish, which are otherwise likely to die. Tests conducted on Friday, Feb. 28, showed oxygen levels less than 1 part per million throughout the lake.

On a lake open to liberalized fishing, licensed resident anglers may take for personal use all species of fish, in any quantity and in any manner, except with the use of seines, hoopnets, fyke nets or explosives. Rough fish such as bullheads, carp, suckers, and buffalo fish may be sold. If used, all gill nets must have metal tags affixed to the net stating the operator's name and address; the tags must be attached to one end of the float line near the first float. Each tag must be a minimum of 2-1/2 inches by 5/8 inches.

Anglers are reminded that they must obey all laws regarding trespassing on private property, and that it is against the law to discard fish on shore or on the ice.

For the latest information on lakes that are open to liberalized fishing and for detailed information about those lakes, go to the DNR Web site at www.mndnr.gov.

We tested the oxygen levels in all 3 basins this afternoon and they all showed readings of less than 1 ppm at the surface. However, we did see an angler with a couple of crappie today and anglers were catching fish as recent as Wednesday.

I have contacted the local Conservation Officer, the USFWS Law Enforcement, and the Wright County Sheriff Department. So, please be safe out there and help one another out. Any fish that you do not plan to take must be returned to the water and not left on shore or the ice. You will be subject to receive a ticket for littering and wanton waste.
