CYRUS ROAD

Can anyone tell me if Cyrus will be making reef trips this yr or not? i have heard both yes and no, and Will be there mar 2-5. Hoping to go up to the reefs one day!

I talked to the guy plowing the road last week and he said they were not going to Garden this year. The bomber and dozer are broke and there is a big pressure ridge that they cant cross.

HOPING SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME A FEW POINTERS AS TO HOW DEEP CYRUS HAS THEIR HOUSES AS I'LL BE UP IN 2 WEEKS. (sorry for caps) One other question is what are the chances of tying into a pike if i set a bigger minnow down in deeper water say 10-15 ft below the ice? Have a buddy coming who wants to catch a gator.

Parapro 4 of us will be heading up to to stay in Cyrus resort cabins and fishing in day houses on the same days as you. Should be a good time. I stayed in a sleeper last year with sportsmans on the same days. We did good and were fishing between 28-32 ft.

We fished out of Cyrus Saturday Sunday this past weekend. Went off their 5.7 mile road in about 33 fow. Did really poor. Tons of little ones, one 21 and one 24, thats it. Very disappointing. I was planning to come off the ice Monday morning, but with the snow and wind building Sunday night, decided to pack up about 9 pm and come in. I had wife and kids with so didn't want to chance it. Does anyone have a report about trying to get off the ice Monday after all that snow/wind?

Ill be up Sunday-Wed. Roger, Thanks for all the work you and the crew do up there!! I'm sure its been a frustrating battle with ma nature, but hopefully I will bring some good luck weather-wise to give you all a break from her!! So far, the forecast I see is for sunny/ partly cloudy and cold, single digit highs for Mon-Tues, but winds minimal!! Lets hope that holds true!

Well fishing overall was slow in about 31 feet. We did get a few keepers and the wife released a 25". It was the maiden voyage for our wheel house and fun was had by all.

The folks at Cyrus are some really nice people!

Made the voyage last weekend. Ice seems to have a bit of pressure to it lol popped the holes Friday night had about a 1/2 inch of water by the time I left Monday morning it was about a ½ from pouring in the house. Had lots of lookers Saturday and Sunday but again tight lipped but we managed a few. Monday morning before we left it was LIGHTS OUT!!!!!! Finally decided it was time to go before I had water in the house…. Was going to just jack the house up or fish outside but I had to head home for work (Sorry for using profanity on here). Was still a fun time…. Hoping to take a couple guys from work up there a couple of weeks from now I hope the Ice and the roads hold up…..

A group of 4 of us stayed at cyrus from March 2-6th. The first day we drove our truck out 3.5 miles and fished in one of there houses. The fishing was slow, but we still managed to keep enough to eat. Propane Dan made sure that we had plenty of heat for the day! The next two days Justin took us out 16 miles by track vehicle near Lem's reef. The fishing was great out there. We caught some slot fish and limited out on keeper saugers the second day out there.

The resort and the staff far exceeded our expectations. They actually wanted us to catch fish. Our plan was to go to a different resort every year to find the one we liked the best. Well in only our second year up we found the one we liked! We are already planning our trip for next year, with a few more people. Thanks Lori, Roger, justin and propane Dan (wont be forgetting about you) it was an awesome trip!!

By the way if you are out 16 miles with only one other house nearby, The bucket on the roof thing don't work very good! LOL!

They are pretty nice people. Not able to make it up this weekend (Grrrr work) Sure hope to make the trip next weekend with a couple guys from work. A buddy of mine is up there today and weekend but hasn't gotton back to me about how they're doing (Still early yet I guess). I would like to try one of those long drives out to a reef with the bombardier have never been in one of those.

  • 2 weeks later...

Was up again last Thursday night late through Sunday at noon. Fishing was slow. We got a few to eat but it was pretty slow all weekend. We went out early friday morning to the 3.4 mile road out of Cyrus. There was not one single house out there. After I popped the first hole, I realized why. It instantly flooded. Good thing we brought our knee high boots with because we needed them. We fished until just before dark and then moved in to a spot with less snow. It was very slow in that spot.

Heard this morning that Cyrus pulled their houses and closed the road due to flooding. Any truth to this?

I got off the lake Monday and Cyrus closed the road just after we got off, I would assume it's still closed as their last report said open water on the river. I would be calling all the resorts before you go anywhere to double check the conditions regardless how much ice is being reported on the big lake.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
