CYRUS ROAD

Yeah, all we need is to have a road open that cannot support daily traffic and have a family go down. That would be really good to have WCCO from the cities come up here and start questioning when roads are open, or even mandated by the state. If you like to fish early ice get a snowcat, or a 4 wheeler. People falling through the ice is tragic and avoidable, not to mention the effects of negative PR. These folks air on the side of safety. Geez, some people just don't get that.

Whoa whoa whoa... Slow your roll people. I should have pasted the post but I was merely replying to the post of the apprehensive guy out with his sub half ton truck (that he alone should feel perfectly safe) and didn't consider the overall context of the blog. I did not mean to suggest they should open the road up unrestricted traffic. I don't want the family of four dropping through the ice and I don't have stock in the railroad business. It was a quote from Ice Road Truckers. I too believe their is enough of a history for the people responsible for the roads to base their decisions off of as to when they open their roads, hence why they all seem to open about the same time.

I'll let you go first 0332. No one is saying you can't go out of a public access all on your own. But when you use a resorts road there is inherited liability that resort takes on. They aren't going to let you go till they are comfortable and I get that personally.4

Roger

I plan to bring my wheel house up on Wednesday XMas day. Will there be anyone to pull it out as I'll be pulling it with a 1 ton diesel. Will your office be open so I can purchase road passes and bait?

Thanks Hookie

Went out on Cyrus' road with 14ft wheelhouse and ATV's Friday midday to 29ft (after Roger came over and shook my dad's hand letting him know it was great to see him back) and we caught about 30 Friday afternoon, and Saturday was slower and caught about 30 all day and another 10 Sunday morning. Plain hook seemed to work but also jigging up a bit would attract the active fish. Was great to get out on the lake and Roger and the whole crew do a great job out there! A couple here my dad got in the pics. full-45226-40653-999177_1010394013394193

Got back late last night. Went out of Cyrus. Pulled the house up with a one ton Diesel so I was unable to pull it out on the lake (I knew this before going up BTW) Jordan was very quick to hook up to house and pull it out (Thanks again Jordan). Fishing was very good Thursday and Friday Saturday with the nasty wind the fish got a bit tight lipped and made us work for them. Roger and the crew were up bright and early Sunday morning cleaning up the road from the drifts. I’ve gotta hand it to the guys and gals there they do a great job and are very friendly I can't say enough. Last year we moved from a spot shallower out to deeper water in search of fish, we than moved back to the shallower water for the evening. Upon arriving back at our original spot the wheel house spots were all taken. Called up to the resort and in no time they had someone out there to punch another hole out for us. If you need to call Roger he actually answers his cell and is very quick to assist. It was nice to finally meet roger in person to put a face with the post here lol. Hope to be back up there Thursday afternoon.

Fished lake of the woods for the first time this past weekend. We drove out from Cyrus then used our portables. That wind Saturday morning made it tough setting up our portables, but once we were set up fish bit right away. My buddy caught the biggest eye at 25.5 inches.

Had a great time for our first ever trip, probably going to try another later in the winter. Probably rent out a house next time, especially if it's windy again.

Roger, got an idea when 1 tons pulling houses might be able to get out? See you guys are letting 3/4 tons out, even though there is zero weight difference, at least in Fords.

Heading up out of Cyrus fri morning. Any reports this week? Hoping the warmup turns the bite on for at least a few hours. Our house is on a wheelhouse road in 29ft right now. Stop by if you see a truck next to the Walleye Inn 2 (14ft wheelhouse plain aluminum color) and say hi.

Just back from fishing out of cyrus. Fishing was slow for us and we threw everything at them. Heard a few other groups did better a bit shallow. Gotta give a big thanks to the resort guys and Roger for stopping to help out when our wheel house wheel fell off. A weld busted and we were greatful Roger directed us to Cyrus's shop to get it welded and their guy there did a great job.

how is it getting around up there? Heading up on wednesday and wondering if you can get off the road and away from people a little bit with the shack or do you pretty much need a spot plowed out for you?

Depends on getting around. This last bit of snow and wind made more drifts. If you beat on your truck and wheelhouse you could get offroad but can't see any jagged ice or cracks under the snow in those areas. In the past we've used chains to do that.

Was out of Cyrus New Year’s day till Saturday morning. Fishing was slow the fish were tight lipped but had other things to keep us busy. Dish didn’t want to pick up the satellites (Finally did though). Truck started to freeze up when we left to get Propane (That was a long sleepless night lol) The trucked puked out a 1 ½ gal of coolant. Called up to the resort and asked if someone could run out a gallon of coolant and sure enough they were able to send some out (I normally have some but my daughter grabbed it). I forget his name (I’ll call him the new guy since he started this past Fall) brought (Really a nice Kid) I would’ve offered him a beer but don’t think he is old enough to drink lol. Moving on I was able to get the truck to function till I was able to get to the station for coolant (Replaced the one I had used) and propane. All and all it wasn’t the best weekend I had but guarantee it’ll be one I never forget! This is the reason I go out of Cyrus is that Roger and his crew as well as all the people there are great. I know some other roads might be posting that they are getting more action but you can’t replace the peace of mind you have going out of Cyrus. Thanks again guys/Gals of Cyrus!!!!!!!!!!

I also had an issue on Friday with my SUV not starting and Roger came out right away to help. We were not able to get it started then but after quite a bit of time that Night I got her running with some help from an electric griddle under the motor. Also the fishing was steady for us Thursday and Friday using smaller white/red crappie jigs on set lines. This was the first trip with my entire family (wife and two children) and to say the least it was nice to have the peace of mind with the nice roads and excellent service. We caught over 60 fish in two days taking 16 nice saugers and I will be back up in a few weeks, this time with a block heater smile

Nice reports guys! Refreshing to hear a couple folks say nice things about a resort, even though they had some tough circumstances themselves.

That's the kind of stuff that really sells a resort's services! Great reports. wink

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
