Might be off by Monday or Tuesday, but it will be another 2 weeks after that when the DNR repairs the launch so people can get in....

Just go to a lake with a one slab concrete ramp. Me, I still think I am going to a river for opener. The lakes are going to be crystal clear I believe.

Gissert I checked some of Dad's old records, and some of my God Fathers and they both said 1950 was the latest ice out, both said May 17th-18th that would've been for ten mile lake and pleasant that was the lakes they fished at that time. Year before I was born.

Has anyone drove by little pine? Hows much longer before the ice comes off?

Not that I recommend it but there were a couple guys ice fishing on west battle today. Ice isn't even dark yet and evening temps below freezing. Only reached a high of around 40 today. Probably pretty iffy if ice will be gone next Saturday for a lot of lakes.

took a drive around the lakes area after work tonight. heading south on 78, round lake looked dark and broken, rush looked darker than on the weekend, ottertail looked surreal, there was a fog bank on the lake over the cold ice, there was more open water but the ice didnt look that dark, walker looked dark with logs of cracks, long by the riviera access was wide open, pelican bay was open with a boat fishing, lucky them, donald, ottertail city, was black with broken ice, west leaf looked ready to go and middle leaf was open by the access but iced to the east with someone out fishing. generally, it looks like a windy day will open most lakes, no docks are in, but the porta potty guys were delivering the little blue houses to the accesses today.

in front of the corner store it was ice as far as i could see. Bass by underwood just came open totally today. Most other lakes in the area have ice but little but these are shallower lakes. deer was not ice free but should be by now which i was shocked by.

I'm looking @ Otter Tail lake now from my parent's cabin. There is open water about 80 yards off from shore and then ice as far as I can see. We are on the Southeast side of the lake.

Would guess OT will have 30% chance of ice free by Saturday morning. Still about 90% ice as of last night. Going to need some strong winds to get ice moving and breaking up. Without wind would guess Sunday or Monday.

Here are a few pics of area lakes taken this morning. Some will open up in the next day or two and some just won't make it for walleye opener. Might need to find an open bay somewhere for crappies, go further south, do yard work, take a nap, bank up some kitchen passes for another weekend.

Top to bottom was: Lida, S Lida, West Silent, Star, Dead, Heilberger, Jewett. Of the Pics Dead was the most open and should be good by Saturday. No pic but Prairie north of Pelican will be good to go. The wind today should accelerate things quite nicely.

Good luck this weekend! I have to hit the grad party trail myself.

OT about 20% open, need lots of wind today to finish the job.

Fish, West Lost, Norway, etc - small shallow lakes are open.

tomorrow should do it... 30 mph winds with higher gusts.... Hate to have lakeshore on the south side of the lake with that wind and ice tomorrow. ouch...

boat launch south of Ottertail will be out of commission for days with the ice piled up on it.

You can get an even better look if you use the "Open in Google Earth" option when looking at the whole US.

OT still has ice on SE end, about 30%+ still covered with ice. Wind needs to change directions to clear lake 100%

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
