When I target walleyes on green lake I fish the south and west shores on the steep breaks. You can catch them out in the main basin but I have had better luck finding them on the shore line breaks. Also I do better if I am away from the others on the lake.

Hey guys, first post here. I bought a new hub shelter to fit a large party, and two of the guys I'm bringing out have never ice fished in their life. I went a ton as a younger guy, but am just getting back into it and would appreciate any helpful info. My coworker suggested Green Lake, so we will be spending the day up there on Sat Feb 9th. I'd really like to make it a good weekend for my friends, put them on some fish. anything of use would be greatly appreciated!

Also looking for other good lakes around wright/shurburne county for a Friday night fish. I'd like to get the guys out by about 5 or 6 and fish til 10pm or so, and I hear Pelican Lake shuts down after dark, so it seems like that's not a good option. if you're willing to help, please PM me!

That is over 2 weeks away. It is awesome you got your first post but things change so much from day to day. To be able to give you what you are looking for at this time I can't. Green has always been a hit or miss lake for me. What kind of fish are you looking to catch? If you want walleyes look at what I just posted for walleye spots on the lake. Crappies roams the main basin. Pike cruise the whole lake but if I was looking for them I would stay in shallower water. Gills I also post that I fish for them a long the north shore in shallow water normally I fish to the west of the point where the pile of houses is. I would try to be open as which lake you would fish because there is some great bites that are happening on other lakes in the area.

definitely aware it's a ways off, just wanted to get the post in now so it saw more eyes than it will in the 3 or 4 days before we go. that is all really great info. seems like a small enough lake, shouldn't be horrible to move around a few time slots when different fish get frisky. from what I saw in past posts and with all of this cold weather, barring a heat wave, this lake sounds pretty safe to drive on, correct? ice is never "safe" but conditions can be better or worse..

I'd like to fish for everything, rigged for all different kinds, tip ups for the pike, crappie and walleye rigs and a few sunny rods, i'm ready for battle.

this seems like a really great online community here, i'll be checking in the week before to see what's kickin on surrounding lakes. I want my guys to get hooked on ice fishing. no pun intended...

Just enjoyed a meal of Green Lake crappies. 24' of water. Caught all on waxworms. Not a single bite on minnow or minnow head. Marking a ton of them but could only get 7 to bite. Biggest was maybe 11". Released a couple of smaller ones. Kept 4 total to eat tonight. Delicious. There are a boat load of people out there. I just went left from the landing and just past the first group of houses/cars. Wasn't real sure where to go. Seems like a nice lake.

Hey Crappieday, you need to clear out your private messages. I tried to send you a PM but you can't recieve anymore at the time. Lots of people don't clear that out, but you should, someone might be giving you some info. ** Rush lake**

after you send a PM, if you delete it from your message box does the other person still receive it?

Posted

Well, I sent you a message and then deleted it so we will see if it works.

yep, i got it, but it did say you removed yourself from the topic. i replied to see if it still finds you again. strange there is such a small limit to the PMs. well my message box is now empty, so anyone can send me whatever you want. i'm not opposed to pics of big, firm, round.... walleye?

Can be good after dark but bite doesn't go real late. Don't be afraid of fishing in less than 5 fow. Ida, Locke and Cedar are good options in Wright county.

very cool, thank you.

Was out on Green for the first time this past Monday, fished all day with little luck. Was trying to find some crappies, but they eluded us. We drilled a ton of holes in quite a few areas, but seemed to come up with the same result. I guess we knew it would be a tough day if we even had to hoax the perch into biting. Caught about a dozen perch and one small walter. Can anyone tell me if they have had any success on this lake during the day or is more of a evening/night bite? Seems like a lot of people were headng out after dark to their spots. Thanks for any info.

The crappies bite during the day. You just need to find the ones up off the bottom. People do fish it after dark as well but I have had my best luck during the day for crappies.

Was out from about noon until 4:30 on Sunday. Started off in 7' of water. That was dead. Then drove towards the south and ended up in 24' of water. Was marking a lot of fish and managed to bring up 3 perch. All 6-8". That was it. Caught all three on a foo flyer jig with wax worms. I tried jigging with a variety of lures and minnow head with no luck.

Not much luck yesterday, was out about the same time as "gp". After crappies with minnows and waxies, worked last week-end, but not yesterday!

Maybe this mid-week change in weather will help with the bite.

As least it will be warmer for moving around a bit.

I'm planning to hit up Green Lake this Sunday with some buddies. hope the fish turn on by the weekend.

Posted

I am going to give it a try on Friday again, ill try to give a report before you head out on sunday

Posted

awesome, yeah let me know. PMs should be clear. read back on this thread a little ways, there are a few spots recommended. let me know what you end up fishing for, i.e. crappies or eyes

If you please drop a post on this thread as well. That way you can help other fisher people out! Thanks

yeah, definitely, share with all if you are willing to. I'm hoping you have luck. Looks like I might be out there Saturday instead of Sunday. I'll be spending the whole day on the ice, so if anyone else is going to be out there, let me know, be glad to shake a fellow HSO guy's hand.

A spot to check would be opposite shore of the landing there is a A framed house and out a hundred or more yards there is a weed line and infront of that house it makes a bend towards the house. Good spot in the past for crappies and sunnies if you find the spot...last time out it did look like there were some houses in the area. Good Luck

This sunday there is a fishing contest on Green Lake. Just thought I would give you guys a heads up.

Posted

good to know. is there a better time of day on Green for a walleye bite? I can't get up there and a line through the ice any earlier than 9am, at that point should I just shoot for gills until later?

  • 'we have more fun' FishingMN Builders

This contest is normally on the hump so if you could hit up the south and west shore for eyes. It may chase some of the fish from there to other areas maybe.

Posted

I take it you will be in the contest?

Posted

Tried it again yesterday, 3:30 to 7:00 in 24 ft of water. Out from the high bank.

Lots of perch action early 6 to 7 inchers. One nice crappie and a small walleye. They are still in the lake.

Might have to make it out there on Sunday- but the weather could be a big factor.

I maybe out there. Seeing my family will all be out there I am sure they will want to me go. I have had great luck over the years at that contest.

Ok the ice was 15-16 inches and less than 2 inches of snow. It’s was -15 this morning and the weekend looks to be cold again. The fish were there but not biting with change in weather.

I guess the vikings are a lot like fishing.  Very entertaining but frustrating at times. I've probably been cheering the vikings for 50 plus years  that i can remember and once again it's all about (there's always next year).

I remember Jeno's boxed pizza years ago.  Mom made it every Saturday night while dad and I watched All Star Wrestling.

On the South Shore... Ice fishing is going great on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters reporting thickening ice conditions with two feet of ice in some areas.  Many ice roads are now open to 1 ton vehicles pulling a wheelhouse.  Every road has different weight limits, check with each resort for details before traveling up and out on the ice.      Some good fishing this past week.  As a rule, fishing activity is happening in 28 - 32 feet of water.  Resorts do just about everything they can to get customers on fish and this past week, some resorts made some long runs, resetting fish houses in new areas miles off shore.  Most are reporting good fishing as a rule.     It is common to sort through some small walleyes and saugers to get your keepers on LOW.  Naturally, some big fish are showing up, especially in deeper water.  In addition, this has been a very good year for jumbo perch with good numbers being caught.  Other fish in the mix are eelpout (burbot), pike, tullibees and an occasional sturgeon.      Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole. In the jigging hole, a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head or tail in gold / pink, gold / glow red, glow white / pink, or Wonder Bread have worked well.     Especially in the deeper water, some anglers are finding success on rippin raps or using jigging spoons with a rattle as well.     On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well.  One day the jigging line catches most of the fish, the other day a deadstick is hot.     Electronics are very helpful to see suspended fish, know when fish are coming through and adjust your presentation to the mood of each fish.  Most resorts, outfitters and bait shops in the area rent electronics by the day.   On the Rainy River... The Rainy River is still producing some nice walleyes and saugers, primarily in the mornings and evenings.  A jig and minnow working well.   Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing continues to be good for those targeting them.  An oversized hole, or three holes drilled together, with nightcrawlers or frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig fished on the bottom are what anglers are using.     Ice conditions on the river can vary significantly due to the current. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions.    Up at the NW Angle... Ice fishing continues to be very good up at the Northwest Angle. Resorts have fish houses set up on various pieces of structure as well as adjacent to structure in deep mud.  A consistent mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, pike and tullibees in the mix.     Shallow structure is best right away in the morning and as the sun starts going down in the late afternoon.  Mud is more of a slower bite but all day.   The ice road from Jerry's on the mainland (Angle Inlet, MN) to island resorts (as of this past week) was open to 1 ton vehicles.  Guests drive right to their island resort after picking up a road pass at Jerry's or Point North Services.  Venmo is also available at all resorts.  Work through your resort for specifics.   Ice fishing is in full swing across Lake of the Woods and there are openings for lodging, fish house rentals, sleeper fish house rentals and meal plans across the area.  Ice fishing is extended on LOW with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st, walleye / sauger season open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes.

From your fingertips to God's ears...  Finally got some snow!   Several inches of new snow fell before and during the weekend.  Sunday eve when we left, the high winds had already begun to create some drifting on the lake.  It was fun riding for sure.  Lots of folks on the lake this past weekend too.  We fueled up the sleds at Shamrock and saw as many people fishing in that area as I've ever seen in the Winter on Lake Vermilion.     Our weekend results were decent.  Jeff and I and a buddy caught probably 50 walleyes between the three of us, mostly fishing a jig/plastics with our three biggest being 24", 25", and 25.5".  We also got one large pike of unknown length.  During the midday on Sunday, we targeted whitefish and Jeff managed one big one.  We released all of our fish, except for three small walleyes that our buddy wanted to bring home for a meal.  Definitely a fun weekend on Lake V!

The Vikings are the Vikings so it's nothing new.  It is kind of sad that Darnold's off season stock is now going to drop like a rock after these last two games. It kind of shows he's not a big game guy.  🤔

I'm blaming leech... his food selection has been lacking game days recently  🤣
