brain check before the weekend

it looks like there is decent ice on lake<BR>of the woods. if it were possible i would<BR>absolutely be there fishing this weekend.<P>to all that are lucky enough to get to go<BR>let me remind you to follow basic safety<BR>rules of early ice.<P>at this point, only venture out on a <BR>maintained or marked road. (there is no<BR>snow so watch for sticks or markers).<P>stay near other people and when everyone<BR>starts to leave in the afternoon follow <BR>them in.<P>bring some rope along and a lifejacket or<BR>floatation cushion. and bring an extra<BR>pair of coveralls, boots and gloves.<P>be aware of changing conditions on the ice<BR>and in the weather.<P>only a little more preparation can ensure<BR>a safe and successfull trip<P>the winter is long and christmas is next<BR>week dont take unnecessary chances now.<P>merry christmas everyone<P>curt quesnell

Hi Curt,<P>Good advice, no doubt. Another thing I always do when I'm in doubt of the ice is wear a set of homade ice picks around my neck. Easy to do, take a couple pieces of large wooden dowel, a couple ten penny nails, and a dremel with a cut off tool, long piece of string, and, ouala, ice picks. And I don't just bring the life jacket, I wear it man!! Wish I could be there too, but alas, family obligations dictate behavior. Doesn't look like I'll be able to get out until maybe next Sunday, and it'll be local then. Thinking about an overnighter two weeks from now though.
