I am guessing by putting them in the half hole they had in the ice acting like a live well.

That is a I believe a ticket waiting to happen. Once they put them in a 'livewell' they are considered "in possession". Not too sure I'd want to take that chance with the game warden...

Correct me if I'm wrong....

Good Luck!

Well, technically there are in the lake. Definately an argument waiting to happen, but it is quite a common practice out on the lake.

Yea chris but they are in captivity. No doubt that is an awsome display an again congrates to the fisherman, certainly not trying to take anything away from them, but i know that prcatice puts alot of unneeded stress on prespawn females even tho they were released which is great. A weekend one can only dream about for sure.

You can see they have a livewell cut in the ice. Technically I dont think this would be DNR approved but I would rather see people do this and release the fish rather than take them home. Makes for some pretty cool pictures. Nice catch

all of the fish are over the slot so with enough of us we were never over possession.

O.K., good to hear you thought it through. Wasn't trying to read into anything, just thought some may be slot fish...

Congrats on the fun day.

Good Luck!

The idea that our livewells stress the fish I believe is bogus, because we make these wells the fish we catch are out of the water for only seconds to take pictures, and everytime we release fish that sit in the wells, they swim away better than a fish that we get catch, get hooks out of, take pictures, and then release right away, the wells are created with one hole poked through the bottom of the ice so the fish are always getting fresh water, and as long as you're not over limit there are no laws that say you can't have a livewell

I'd like to hear what a CO would say about this. I know I personally wouldn't chance it.

Beautiful fish guys!! I wish I could get my kids into some fish like that at least once in their lives.

I am pretty sure there is a law about culling fish though I am not sure exactly how it's written. Meaning you cannot release a previously caught fish for a more recently caught fish but not sure if this applies while you are still technically under your limit or only when you have reached a limit.

Hey Slicker don't ya love it when you have an awesome weekend of fishing, try to share it with everyone and then a bunch line up to shoot you down and make you feel like Cr$^%$P!! You guys obviously knew what you where doing, if no fish were killed or harmed and released back for someone else to catch another day then I'm with you man! This is the same type of crowd who was whining last year when that 75 year old man caught the laker up by Garden and kept it to get mounted....."Oh but he didn't have a tag"!!! Who the F' cares, he's 75 years old!....everyone needs to worry about themselves, if you can't simply give someone a compliment or your so jealous you feel you have to bring someone down to make yourself feel better then please dont waste space on the forum. These guys where out there getting it done and had a weekend most of us would only dream about! Great Job (rant over)

Great rant! This would make great cut & paste material about once a week. In this case, the whiners are right. MN regulations state "Any fish caught and will not be utilized must be immediately returned alive back into the water". I agree with NAMA, no harm no foul but I think there would have been some paperwork exchanged if the CO would have stopped by. I'm not a cop or an eelpout (lawyer) but I try to keep up on the regulations. You have to these days. I don't agree with all of the regs. The new boat plug law really chaps my backside. I have pointed out violations for years and probably always will. Sometimes I am thanked because the person didn't know any better. Sometimes I'm told to mind my own business.

To all the folks out in the woods and waters of Minnesota, lots of people have the TIP number programmed in their phone.

ok, so a co does stop out there, how is that any different from the livewell in a boat? unless the co happens to see them releasing them from the well there would be no violation. Count me in the camp that says congrats on a great day of fishing.

must have been pretty interesting trying to reach into the livewell and grab those big girls out of there for a pic! pike rodeo!!!

FYI on that laker and stamp deal. Mn laws allow persons 65 and over to fish and possess trout without having to obtain a trout stamp. If it applies to border waters also I'm not sure as I haven't got the new laws yet.

Congrats on the big fish...I'm jealous!

As far as the rules go, who cares, the fish are still swimming! With some simple reading of the regulation book it is pretty clear that culling is not allowed once a daily limit or possession limit is reached (see pg 10). So, as long as these guys didn't possess 7 pike and then replace one for another then they are completely fine in those regards. This of course assuming that the live well that they made is considered a live well.

If the live well that they made is considered to be part of the lake, then they would have violated mn law by catching fish by snagging or noodling (by hand) when they retrieved the fish for the pictures! (see pg 10 again).

oh a technicality a lawyer would love to argue this point I am sure. Those fish are beauties and its great they were all released. Some people need to relax a bit on the intent of the posts discussing culling because though I could generally see nothing wrong with what was done here and their intent was obviously in the right place. Law is the law. Internet and Facebook "bragging" has caused many local visits by the DNr so you have to be careful what you say and post. These guys had a great day and released some giants no disputing.

Were all these giants really caught in just one weekend? WOW!!! And all of em' over the slot!!! Wowee wow wow!!!!

What an amazing weekend of fishing! That must have been a blast. Terrific photography, and much gratitude and admiration for putting em' all back!!!! Really big pike "replicas" are prettier than the real thing - at least in my opinion.

I gotta ask though, no specifics mind you, just.....Minnesota side or Canada? I've never seen that many giant females in one area in such a short period of time on the southern end.

REALLY impressive! Thanks for posting.

Late ice tip-up fishing on the southwest shore can be outstanding (as you see). The later the better but if you hit it right, you will be chasing flags all day.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
