technical questions.

I do the same, but I run my fluids through a different kind of filter before I..... pour it out on the ice.

All natural.

Eyeowegian & others- Keep the questions & suggestions coming. That is what makes this tech thread so important to the safe and productive fishing on LOW!

Spicoli- Did you get the engine to run backwards on your reefer fish house? You can prolly just put a twist in the drive belt between the engine & compressor and let it run regular. It will work all the same.

I think there will be enough ice to slide that bugger out now.

If you put too much naturally filtered fluids out on the ice, this guy might show up.

Just chase him off, he's creepy about "used fluids"

So what does Bear Grylls do to help the issue of not enough water due to fish harvest while fishing LOW?

I never watch TV but this guy sounds like he needs some environmental splainin.

He's a survivalist, and according to his show the only way to survive pretty much any sittuation is to eat bugs, eat rotting meat from old kills and drink lots of.... pee.

That's TV for ya. "reality"

Talk about "reality" TV..just watched a show on History a little bit ago called Monster Quest. They were on Mille Lacs searching for a fierce, human attacking Muskie! I only caught the last 20 mins of the show and didnt see such a beast, however, they said that the anchient critter is not scared of humans, cameras and such in the water therefore may attack at anytime!!

With that...fellow fishers beware if you decide to take a plunge in any of the Nations Muskie infested waters!

[PoorWordUsage]?? Seriously!!

Was it that fisheman guy? no I think that's called "river monsters" isn't it?

I dunno, too many "reality" shows on these days, can't keep up with them all.

I see you got "poor word usaged", shame on you.

Cyber cops are onto our crafty sailor talk acromyms.

We will have to make up brand new swears.

How does bloonk sound?

No that's no good, needs to be bolder...

Pousker Flumpin.

"He's a bloonkin pousker flumper."

Wow, I'm not sure what it means but it sounds bad.

It probably means chronic auger extension ponderer.

He with chronic internal debate for "bring or dont bring the auger extension?"

Or possibly the repeat offender of the age old "Did Babler sell to (fill in the blank)?"

That I think would be more of a "flippy gilbawonker".

Funny thing, I actually thought I had it figured out. Sunday I slid the reefer unit out of the trailer and mounted it back in with the cooler facing out and the exhaust facing in, it worked great, warmed up in there quickly. I would have posted about it sooner, but the CO2 in there knocked me out and the bugger didn't run out of fuel until this afternoon, kinda glad I only had the tank half full.

I have a question for ND or twisted. I am heading up soon and am faced with a dilema. I have decided to deal with all the extra hassle and through the extension in the house just in case. My question is do you think I should bring along the allen wrench for the bolt or is there somewhere up there that I can pick one up if needed? thanks for your help.

Thats a tough call.

I tend to think improvisation is your best bet, something that's not quite the right tool for the job but when used clumsily and very slowly as in multiple failed attempts before partial (good enough) vicory is achieved.

Perhaps a large heavy pipe wrench?

Or what ever you use to tighten the hose onto your propane tank?

I need cofee.

-11 this morning, it was -14 at bead time last night. Local radio said we are headed for -25 for a low tonight up in LOW country.

Making ice now!

I have decided with the odd ice conditions this year to not bring my auger, much less an extension. (I lost my allen wrench frown )

I fill my pockets with crayfish, toss on a life jacket, & fish the cracks.

I have even used a cane pole & a wheeler to troll the cracks. That's just me tho.

(Dissclaimer-Stay away from them cracks)

FYI-The trick is to bring with some gummy worms for human consumption so there are plenty of bears left for fishing.

If you lower the actual house will an extension be needed--for the auger? Or, would 2 augers drill twice as deep? thanks.

If you dig an ice hole and then climb down in the hole with the auger you should get through without an extension.

When you hit water your hole will get wet pretty fast though....

I don't like to carry the extra weight of an extension so that is kinda how I do it. I drill a large hole as deep as I can then I grab my other mini-auger that fits inside of the 10" hole, & drill the rest of the way thru.

So I'm really just drilling a hole.... in a hole. At least there is no worry about bringing the extension for my 8" uranium rod powered auger.

I found a supplier in China for gummy dolphins! Only problem is that I need to buy them by the metric ton. So, I will take pre-orders for an idea how much interest there is.

To bring an extension, or not to bring one...quite the debate here lately! However, ND, if you brought the famed extension/flask...its no longer a valid question...mystery solved!!!

Ok, I think I get it. So, dig a hole with my chisel, then sort of climb in and cut with the auger. I am worried about getting my hole wet, so may install a sump pump in the chiseled hole to keep the water from filling my hole. I wonder how many gallons per hour the pump should be able to do. I also think the pumped water could be used to aerate my minnows --unless I go the gummy dolphin route.

If you brought a small raft you could dig/chip your ice hole, toss the raft in then drill with the auger from inside the raft. Then when you break through with the auger, your ice hole will fill up with water which will float your raft and you wont get your..... hole wet....

Of course a raft sized crater full of water would be no good to put a house on top of so you would want to bring planks to hold the house up.

It would be worth it to not deal with the hastle of the extension though.

I know another guy that just hates auger extensions. He put special ape hanger handle bars on his power head ,fit it with a snorkle kit for the intake and exhaust and put an extension tube on the gas filler neck.

Now he can submerge the powerhead down into the hole and his handles, throttle, intake, exhaust and gas cap are still up out of the hole.

Anything is better than using a stupid extension, what ever it takes I say.

Basicly all ya have to do is drill the hole an just as u punch thru, attach a faucet with a 3/4 inch pinkney flange an ur good to go. Turn the faucet left will allow walleyes to flow an turn right will allow sauges to flow. morris this weekend dave. later baor

We're here!!! But we havent fished yet today. However, I heard that the best fishing was with left handed hooks, orange glow gummy bears, on the right hand side of the shack. You need a right twist fuel injected, double carbed bio propane, dual overhead cam auger (minus the exension) nest to the heave. But if you take a wheeler out, you need red glow gummies and a double hook crappie rig. And...dont forget a pink charmer!!

Hope this helps

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.
