Keep passing the bong boys........
Bongs don't work good ice fishing as the water or beer freezes, and if made of glass they may get broke in the porty when fly across the lake I would think? Although I have never try one. confused

Keep passing the bong boys........

No thanks.

I always said, if I am having fun, I want to remember every minute! Can't avoid the knocks on the noggin sometimes, but life is way too much fun.

Friends wouldn't let me anyways, say I am off center enough already grin

Back to the auger blades.....what auger rpm is best to sharpen them at?

Bongs are only recommended for permanent houses and if you use lake water for said bong, the water must be dumped out at shore before traveling on any public roadway. grin

I'll stick with pong. No bong for this guy.

As far as auger blade sharpening...

I know it's not right to put a serious answer in this thread...

So I wont.

lol!!

But I do sharpen my own and I don't use any RPMs.

the best way I have found is to clear the snow off the beach on Pine Island and drill a couple of holes in the sand. The old way I used to do it was take the blade off and sharpen it on a belt sander. I thought to myself why hold the blade still on a piece of moving sand when you can leave the blade on the auger and move it across sand that is sitting still. Same concept, just in a different way.

That doesn't sound like to bad of an idea, but I would hate to add my lapping oil to the sand by a lake, it may not be a good idea for the water clarity? confused

You need to use vegetable or canola oil since they are biodegradeable. They are also somewhat clear so it shouldn't effect the clarity.

You can sharpen in reverse if you put blades on upside down. Just not backwards. If sharpen backwards then they will only cut if you drill from the bottom of the ice upwards.

"Keep passing the bong boys"?

This comment makes no logical sense what-so-ever. Why would anyone even think to post something so silly, senseless, and irresponsible under the heading Technical Questions?!?

Now...can we please get back to the topic of which auger is best for a 1 year old. Geez.....

I did manage to build a modified 7" electric auger for the kid in the shop last weekend. I was afraid to post about it after all the NCIS & area 51 threats tossed in my direction.

It turned out pretty sweet & I thank the flighting donor for his part. I owe him some beers & a bus ride. Not at the same time of course.....

ok. let the tomfoolery resume!!!!!!

Did you add your hammerdrill option for the tough -30 F ice conditions? Don't want him to get frostbite taking too long to drill with conventional drill in those conditions.

Oh and don't forget the auger preheater kit, makes it feel like you're cutting butter in July wink

It's been my observation that really cold hard ice (-10 F) cuts much easier than warm soft ice (32 F).

Does this have anything to do with humidity, and if so, does it have any impact on clarity?

Either way, I think if the little whipper-snapper stays in his bunny boot, frostbite will remain a non-issue. Those goofy bunny boots are really warm.

Good Point toddb!

Is there room in the bunny boot for him to keep his mud minnows? Don't they have an air valve on the side? Wow he could be the only kid on LOW with oxygen packed mud minnows! When I was a kid we had to keep them in our mouths so they wouldn't freeze. Tough to spit out only one at a time. Mud minnows float when frozen and it takes too much lead to sink them, don't look natural to the fish. Maybe the new tungsten stuff will work?

I thought this one was about mud minnows? You guys gotta stop hijacking this thread!
Hey, I was the 4th post when this thread started a year ago and still never had my question answered!

"mud minnows-underwater camera? Am I missing how they go together? confused " mad

So on it goes! grin

After running the auger in forward in the sand I would spin it just briefly in reverse to take the burrs off the blades. Lakevet hit it on the head, I first thought it was best to sharpen in reverse but then the only way to drill a hole was to start from the bottom side of the ice

Sometimes I hook up the snorkel and the exhaust hose to the jiffy gasser and I drill my holes from under the ice just so I don't have to deal with the ice shavings in the house.

OK I've never done that, but I'd like to watch someone else do it.

Not dealing with all of those shavings would surely be worth some extra effort.

If a guy cut a hole next to where you were gonna fish with a chainsaw, you could then drill from the bottom & not have that mess to clean up. That combined with the ease of sharpening your auger in the sand on shore is win/win.

Would those universal joints and extentions that you use from the top bunk work for this application so you could stay out of the water?

Dave, Check out "underwater fishing" on youtube. I couldn't figure out how to post the video here. I guess that's a technical question in its self. crazy

If you had 3 of them I think you could make the corner.

I am also thinking of a 3 on the tree manual trans so I can grab another gear in the thick ice.

The disclaimer wasn't necessary. The detailed explanation obviously couldn't have come from anything other than personal experience.

A much more efficient way to capture and control a wild hair? Cover them with 5 layers of GOOP.

I still prefer the sliced boot method.

My wife actually uses a Ped Egg to "sand down" the hardened skin on the heels of her feet (please don't tell her I told you). I use the powdery residue from this process as a topping for pasta!

So this qoute is all about ice augers???? Speaking of senseless......

Just watch it if you pop the clutch.

Dave

Use a Jiffy propane auger- headaches not as bad and easier to see through your snorkel mask with no blue smoke...

I just realized that we didn't warn anyone NOT to drill a hole from the bottom side of the ice with a new electric auger. You could end up electricuted. Only do this with a gas powered auger. I would have felt really bad if someone had tried this with an electric and got hurt.

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.
