fished this morning....had a nice laker get off at the hole cry....i ordered a 10in auger bit yesterday...if i would of had a 10in hole i would have landed that fish....just couldnt get the head started up the hole...o well...it was a fun fight...had a couple other lookers.

Stevo,

I think 4 inches of snow on Burntside will stop, or greatly limit pickup travel.

Hopefully we don't get that much, but it will cut down the competition gringrin

Yeah, but your boot might go down a 10" hole....or....you lose so much stuff down a 10" hole....yada yada, blah blah....

You will really like the bigger hole for fishing predator fish. REALLY like it!

Hope the lakers keep biting. FINALLY getting out to chase them this weekend.

So far we've only had less than half an inch here at the house, and it's barely flurrying out at all. I can see the stars up in the sky, even. Updated forecast says total possible accumulation of 2 inches or less. Less would be good, but 2 inches isn't going to stop pickups.

Mike, you'll like the big hole that new drill will make. smilesmile

Fixed your post for you, Maki. Most of us knew what you really meant but I figured I would clarify anyway.

For those of you driving a real truck with tires other than the cookie cutter style no worries. grin

Casey, you're so mean! gringringrin

FWIW, we didn't even get an inch of snow. Half inch, maybe. I was out on the lake this morning and it was fine going. But then, I drive a Chevy. wink

any fish foss??

Posted

I didn't fish. I was out locating half a dozen new spots. Seems there are permanent shacks sprung up on a lot of my traditional spots. No surprise there, with the traffic we've been having due to this winter's easy driving conditions. winkwink

With the camera, I did see a few lakers move through on those new spots, which is encouraging. I mean, we know there are gajillion places that hold lakers on Bside in winter, but even though I am confident in the new locations, it's nice to look those fish right in the eye. smilesmile

those perms will be gone soon...there is so many spots to fish on burntside and so many of them hold fish...the spot that i had the big fish get off at the hole was a brand new spot...no one had fished it this year...there are tons of spots like that..untouched...that hold BIG lakers.

Agreed. It's always good to take a day and just run around with the auger, gps, map and Vex (and now the camera). I'd hoped just to be able to shoot the Vex through the ice with the help of a water puddle on the ice, but all the places I hit, while the ice was clear and hard, had really rough surfaces, so it wouldn't work, and I had to drill.

I've got a bunch of great spots I've trolled over during open water season and still need to punch holes and pinpoint. Searching out laker water is fun. So many locations, so little time! gringringrin

And my monster map is getting very cluttered with locations/structural elements that don't even show up on the printed version. smilesmile

How often do people catch white fish on burntside?

Posted

Not very often at all. I've caught one in 8 years. The smelt have pretty well demolished both the whitefish and the cisco/tulibee populations. No cisco have been found in DNR nets for years, and the whitefish they net are fewer and farther between each year.

GMC stands for Grave Mistake, Casey. smirk

Just pray you never get stuck when I'm on the lake.

You'll see the Ranger approaching, then watch me circle you while taking pictures cry

But, I won't be too hard on you, because I'm not that kind of guy. smile

After 10-15 years, it will be like it never happened!! gringringrin

Bwaaaaahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!

great outdoors, I sure like the tracks on your ranger. Thinking about getting some for mine, have they worked well for you.

Other than for the usual reason... you're lost on your own lake laugh

For that comment, there will be no statute of limitations on pictures of you shoveling out your truck!! laugh

PS-I see you're from Silver Bay now.

Did Babbitt extradite you, or has the GMC been stuck in a 6 inch snow bank on the North Shore for so long, you had to change your address?? gringringringrin

They'll be just like your photos of the Easter Bunny and Sasquatch....

You are correct, they'll be exactly like them combined! smirk

A creature with large furry ears, big & ugly, shoveling out his GMC pickup! laugh

Yup... I'm movin' up in the world.

Babbitt's gain is Silver Bay's loss gringringrin

Fished b-side yesterday morning and just like last time I was up fishing with mike stark my fish came in the mornin...My wife barely got her bait down on a 55ft cliff when she caught this respectable fish and 20 minutes later while moving to a spot that was still in the shade I caught this scrawny 29 incher that put up quite a fight. Later on the wind picked up a bit so We again moved to a more sheltered but proven spot I caught a decent 27 incher that also had some battle in him. Hoping to be up soon to test some new baits that kept me up at night wondering.

Posted

my new 10in auger bit is coming in today...cant wait for that bigger hole...its going to be so much easier getting those pigs up the hole.

Thanks mike, Im headed up in the morning.....Ive been making lures too long and now I wanna play with them!! was going to head up this morning but I had too many crown royals last nite after work and didnt have my &*^&*^&*^ together. Ive caught some decent lakers thru my 8 inch hand auger hole but I hate fishing without my 10 inch hole....my brother drills two 10 inch holes right next to each other cuz he likes to watch tv I guess....myself everytime Im looking at a fish down my hole it just messes me up and I end up not getting the fish. Btw I caught that dark fish out of the same hole where we fished about the same time too it was the skinniest most feeble laker ive ever caught up there...29 inches but not much weight....ud think the thing was starving to death lol!

Posted

i might be off tomorrow...when you heading out? if im not working i think i will be out at sun up...the morning as been the best time to be out.

Posted

Im on it!!! ill text you later on tonight and let ya know the details.

What a beautiful day to be on the ice. While it was -10 at sunrise, it was a CALM cold. gringringrin

Sun all day, light winds, got above freezing. Darn it, I love this kind of weather on the ice. And we've got ALL of March ahead of us! gringrin

Here's Stan with a 7 from today, and the view of the west side of Water's Island facing east as the sun set and the moon rose.

God's country indeed. smilesmile

My 30 year-old Indy 500 (over 8,000 miles) has been having a mid-range bog for many years now.  It is worse on warm days and when the engine is warmer.  The sled runs fine up to about 1/4 throttle, then runs extremely rich up to 3/4 throttle.  The spark plugs are dark brown (better brown than down?) but not saturated.  8 years ago I moved the clips on the jet needles from the 3rd to the 2nd groove to lean the mixture and it helped for a while.   Should I move the clips to the top groove (temporary solution)? Could the jet needles, needle jets, and/or the main jets be warn and need replacement?   Don't think I will have time to tear the carbs apart this season for a rebuild so I may just band-aid the problem.

I think that Mike89 picked April 26 two hours before you, jparrucci.  Is that correct Mike89?

My last hide I gave to my Taxidermist friend to make what ever he liked out of it.   I've got a few fun Bear hunt stories to be told.  All 3 of us our first year stupidly tracking a blood trail in the dark together and getting lost, luckily smelled the bait making circles and got out. 🫣 Flash lights dying, deep in a swamp following a blood trail in the dark, the one who stayed at the bait called us back in!  We learned our second bear! Lol. 😞  Downing a wounded charging bear with the last bullet when tracking, no lie! 😬    Have had my fun!  🥳

I remember that kegel… stuff….!   just finished my post work latte as a matter of fact!  Only the second case of those I’ve ever bought.     I’d get Mike something better.

I still have hope. Put me down for my dad's birthday in April 26. Come on warm weather.

🤔 mythical FM beer?????is that kinda like kegel brau!!!!!!!!🤣 or busch lattes!!!!!😄

application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

aw that date is fine and maybe someday we will have beer!!!

Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
