Catching live shiners

Recommended Posts

Does anyone catch their own shiners on the MN river? I have caught a few nice ones on light takle but just once in a while. I also saw a guy throwing a cast net getting quite a few at a time but i know that is illegal. Does anyone use dip nets or have any other techniques? Just not having luck with bullies or suckers and its a pain to get them for every outing.

Find those guys who were using the cast net. Identify yourself as a DNR Officer and "collect their bait and net for evidence." Boom you got yourself bait and a cast net you cant use!

seine net will get you shiners, shad and lots of creek chubs.. go to the mouths of small creeks with the net and you should do quite well (:
