Larger bullhead legal as bait

Anglers can use bullheads up to 10 inches long as live bait, however thebaitfish cannot be transported north of Minnesota Highway 210, according to a rule change adopted by the Minnesota Department of Resources (DNR).

The new rule, which went into effect Aug. 9, allows catfish anglers to use larger bullheads as bait yet helps prevent non-native bullhead populations from establishing themselves in additional northern Minnesota lakes.

The previous rule allowed anglers to use bullheads up to seven inches long as bait, which could be captured from noninfested waters via dip net, angling or noncommercial seine and transported anywhere in Minnesota.

Bullheads live in some northern Minnesota lakes, but they are not a native species. The old rule allowing transport north of Minnesota Highway 210 increased the possibility that non-native bullhead populations could be established in additional lakes.

The new rule allows bullheads to be taken using dip nets, noncommerical seines and angling by a person with a valid fishing license. Any fish taken are considered part of the angler’s possession limit, and water must be exchanged before transporting live fish when exiting designated infested waters per invasive species laws.

An additional rule change allows live transportation and possession of white suckers 12 inches and longer for up to 96 hours. People possessing and transporting the fish are required to purchase such fish from a licensed commercial vendor and retain a receipt showing the date and time of purchase.

Bullheads will be harder to find, just like the flats are. If your still out fishing flats, I would get in as much as possible the next few days, as you have a wall of water coming your way from all of this rain we are getting down here, and that will make the fall holes hard to fish.

I have been using a different spot as long as it is legal to use bullheads from river backwaters. It is loaded with them and I have been getting 10-15 in a half hour in the 4 to 7 inch range. I will shoot you an email.

I'd rather catch a big flat with a state record bullhead than have my name in the books for the biggest bullhead!

Just though that thing was massive!

Heading up to LV a week from today with the kids. Any advice for us? Staying on the West side but open to traveling if the weather permits.   The way the last few weeks have gone, might stay for good!!!

Do have Wi-Fi in your house. Your going to need that to work with any of the cameras that send a signal and video to your phone.  Hardwire is the best but battery power workers well for about two months then you have to pull them and recharge them.  It is nice to sit on a beach in Key West and keep an eye on your house when gone! 👌

With all the craziness in the world I’m looking at getting an outdoor security camera setup for my home. Anyone have ideas on what works well without a huge cost  and easy to do . Or is it better to go with a company to set it up.  We have recently had copper thefts in the area at farmers fields and bin sites and I know it will only gat worse as these things always do. I probably want something that hooks up to my phone as well and wondering if there is a good one with either battery life or if wired is better. Any thoughts are welcome.

Aren't they the ones that ran into problems about illegal bait? Anyone know how that turned out?

You launch on Moose Lake to get to the motorized portage. It's called Prairie portage. To get to the portage you put in at Moose Lake. From Moose you go into Newfound Lake. From Newfound you go into Sucker Lake. On Sucker is where Prairie portage is. There is a dock on the American side and on the Canadian side there is big sign welcoming you to Canada. Latourell's Resort runs the portage and the cost for the portage is $40 for a round trip.

Will that blond haired kid have that cool little orange boat in the show this weekend? Saw him driving around by Muskego Point a few times this summer.

Nope, there are parts of Basswood that allow motors.   Entry is from Fall Lake, and there is (I think) a motorized portage.   It is really popular in the spring...
