Zippel Bay Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to give a fishing report for LOW. A friend and I went up to finish up work on the sleeper and were very pleased with the fishing.

We tried several depths/roads and the best fishing came out of Trophy in 18.5-20ft. The morning and afternoon was best. One morning we caught 18 fish of which 14 were eyes ranging from 14-20 inches. Of course we let almost all of them go as we were already filled out on nice eyes.

We did ok on Bobber in around 24ft but one morning the fishing was very poor.

The house was put on Sauger in around 28ft and it managed some ok fish the best being a 27 inch eye which was caught the first day.

The resort only has fatheads so far this season which did good except the one morning on trophy with emerald shiners. Towards the last day in a half the fatheads outproduced the shiners by a long shot.

The best lure hands down though was the Chubby Darter. Landed the 27 incher and all but one of the 20 inchers.

The ice was very clear and was the water. The sunny days were best and the best day it started out -15. As a matter of fact the best fishing came on the coldest day.

Can't wait to go back!!!

Ok guys I'll give up the magic depth, but you all owe me a hundred bucks. Anywho. My scenario is such, I am straight west of candy camel roll shop, if you havent had her carmel rolls you are missingout, 18 feet is my depth, now the if you are not fishing by 8 am you cant blame me, an I have caught fish as early a seven am. It will really die down by eleven but I manage to pick up a couple around noon, I have also picked up some keeper saugers in that depth also. wich is nice to see. Now I have seen it pick back as early as three pm. an as late as five pm. Good luck an please deposite the money boars account which can be acces at wwwwant$2fish.now thank you, boar

Havent been up in a couple weeks, but my sleeper is still in 24fow. Probably going to pull it out to the 30' area. Over this last weekend how have the conditions changed? Are the roads still good? Did the snow accumulate much? Hoping I dont have to get plowed out.

Same situation we are in. Coming up Friday morning to move the house probably deeper and we are in 24ft currently. 24ft hadn't been the ticket for us either. If you see the Walleye Inn swing over and exchange lies. good luck and road conditions at Zippel are appreciated.

We got a fair amount of snow Sunday night, but the wind was a killer yesterday. I havenot been out on the lake, but I am sure the roads were blow shut. I image they are working hard to reopen or move them around today.

With the winds I'm sure the ice is moving around with the colder weather and the additional snow cover..

you could go deep and catch fish all day or you can move in to 18 to 24 ft range and catch some nice eyes with a few nice saugers mixed in.fishing has been a little on the slow side on zipple bay.my house has been doing good cant complain about the size of eyes we been getting with a few nice saugers mixed in.its fast at times but every day is diff.

Boar,

I called up yesterday..im coming up in 2 weeks. Not sure who i talked to, but she said fishing has been good. Said there were 3 or 4 eyes over 30" taken over the weekend and lots of 14-17 saugers. Sounded like there were alot of slot walleyes too. Hoping it stays good till i get there.

Good Luck

I was up again last weekend and to be honest with you I thought fishing was absolutely terrible. Between 4 guys we only kept 8 fish for the 2 days. NOT my idea of typical LOTW walleye fishing. The bite has definitely slowed. We had our most action in the morning, and after 11 there was very few bites. Marked lots of them with the Marcum, but they would come off the bottom, look at it, and go back down. I tried throwing everything at them, and they just wouldnt bite. We were set up in 30ft. Will be back up in a couple weeks, hopefully things turn around!

Couple of questions for you guys that are up at Zipple often.

I have used Zipples Road system before with my own wheel house but I have a group that would like to go up and they want to drive out next year. They also want to see the igloo bar and say out on the ice to get the early morning bite (and some will have a hard time moving from bed to hole). I'm wondering if it is worth getting the Shallow sleeper with Deep day houses or just taking out the brave few in portables. We have done our annual company trip on Mile Lacs and I keep telling the group after we bring home zilch that it is worth the drive. I'm also trying to get them to go out of Arneson's (my preference) but they really want to drive and have access to showers. Any one use the Deep/shallow vs. just the deep and if so what was your opinions?

Ya I agree wildgloweye, got trusted intel on the shallow bite an it's not what it was, still picking up a few, but not even close to january. typical feburary dulldrums. So walleyeInn I might be looking for ya cause I'm going deep, an I might be out on ice friday evening relocating, where do ya plan on going? I'm looking for 34, if ya find it save me a spot. got a number? He if ya have a plow on your truck I'm the first camper straight west of candy carmel shop on south side of the road, gota 12 pack for ya if plw me an entrance Ha Ha. I'll be bring the snow blower cause I dont have the 25 for zipple to do it. Hey mrmanners, this time of year go deep an stay deep. early an late season are the times to start shallow go deep then end shallow. Later boar

Hey terry, tanks for the info, I found out that there is high banks plowed up an with the rain last week made a hard crust an will be hard to get my house out of there so i'm trying to figure out what to do, My source says a snow blower wont cut it because of the crust, but I've ran a snow blower enought to to know if ya can get thru the crust, the rest is easy but dont know how much crust to get thru, Hmmm... what to do what to do. I'll be up fri. evening tho. are you way out on Boar lindy?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
