Warroad Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Well, I have to say the road has gone from a highway to a trail since the warm weather came and went. The road out to South Tip is good in areas, but quite a few potholes in the road to drive around. Sunday morning they were firming up and should be better by the weekend, if everyone stays out of them. The road goes east of the DNR reef now, so when you get to Sandbar, stay to the right. We made the mistake of going left and spent an hour getting turned around last weekend. We had a trailer with us though. Fishing was spotty and although we caught a limit Friday evening, by Saturday afternoon they had shut off to a few here and there. Whiskey Flats was busy with sled/portable traffic and we managed to pull in two nice eyes in a little over an hour. Not too great, but hey, that's fishin'. Hopefully back to the South Tip this weekend for another day or two.

We stayed with him a few years ago, right after he bought the outfit from Jake.

Kinda nice, there isnt anyone in the sleeper after us and he is pulling the sleepers off the lake on the 15th. So he said if fishing is good and we want to stay another day, its open for us if we want to do that.

Hockeybc,

I was up there on Sunday, Thursday, then again Saturday. On Saturday, there were quite a few of springsteels houses that had been moved. I'm not sure how often they move them, but they have been moving a few of them anyways.

Good luck.

Plans now have changed and will be fishing 1/2 day on Fri and full day on Sat. Glad to hear they are moveing them around a little anyways.

How was fishing?

I've fished south tip the last 5-6 times I've been out, and done pretty well. Well enough to not try somewhere different. That's a pretty good area to find perch too--always nice to have a couple "bonus" fish in the bucket.

Size has been decent also, not too many throwbacks. I don't keep walleyes under 14, saugers under 12, or perch under 11.

Personally, I haven't used anything other than chubs and frozen shiners. Doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Frozen shiners can be found most anywhere, and live ones can be found either in Greenbush, or there's a few resorts near the river that have them. Any live shiners I've seen this year are quite small.

You can get shiners in Greenbush on your way up. Riverside in Warroad has chubs, and frozen shiners. The shiners from Greenbush are kinda small, but they still work. I found some golden shiners this last weekend and had better numbers with them than I did the emeralds.

heading up the first week of march to fish with Bob for the 3rd year in a row, he always seems to get us on fish, a good mix of walleye, sauger and perch. Will be looking to continue my streak of the bonus big fish of the week, both years eelpout over 7 lbs.

Bak2,

Are you going out of Springsteel? If so, maybe we'll run into each other. I have a black Chevy pickup and an X2 portable. I'm hoping to be up that way both Saturday and Sunday.

Good luck

Yes, we will be renting a couple of their houses. I will have a red Nissan Titan with my X2 in the back. We will be up around noon on Fri. and then out again at 8:00 in the morn on Sat. Maybe our paths will cross and we can get into some fish!

Bak2,

I looked for you on Saturday, but couldn't find you. I ran into upnorth in the evening up by the landing and said you had a tough couple days of fishing. Saturday was the slowest I've seen all year, I think I caught 4 fish all day. Hopefully you managed a few fish to bring home and eat a few out there also.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
