Great idea! We have talked about the need for a bar/store/restaraunt on the ice for years. I'm sure it would be a pain for Nick but what a great convienence for the fisherman. I have made more than one run up the river on a snowmobile for food, beverages and other items. I say build it and they will come...

When I was up deer hunting I ran into a couple of friends, one of whom is working on building this igloo. It should be pretty sweet. The plan is you can also fish while you have a burger and bump for a small fee. It is supposed to be about the same size of the existing Zipple bar. Come on hard water.

I'm wondering if they are going to run into some issues with this from the county or other Resorts that may lose some money on not being able to do it. Like who controls liquor on water ways? Huuum?

im sure they had to get a permit for it.and if those other lose money on it so be it.they should have made 1 also.

I was told it was mainly for food, but you can get drinks as well, and rent a hole by the hr. Also it will close pretty early, but sounds like a great deal to me.

I didnt believe it so I called Deanna at the resort and she sounded

surprised that the word was out. It isnt a done deal

yet but most of the licensing is taken care of and plans are

underway for a bar at Zippel out on the ice. They are trying

to think of a name for it now. It will be igloo shaped....

"The Igloo" seems to fit

Hey Curt, have you ever seen Griffs igloo house out over Pine Island? Its sweet!! Fishes 12 but drinks 17! have to see it if you havent. Hangs out at River Bend.

No I haven't. The igloo shape would work great as a fishhouse.

I wonder why there arent more of them...Curt

Yea, fill'em up with booze before getting back on the highways and heading for home. Something is wrong with this picture!

You could say that about ANY bar!

I think the ice ridge bar is a great idea, as there are many responsible people who could enjoy something like this.

I think they should name it- Wilhelm's. Wilhelm Zippel was one of the first white settlers in that area in the late 1800's and lived on the bay.

(Thats why one of Nick big boats is called the Wilhelm Z, I get it now! Curt)

I stopped by and saw the igloo yesterday. It is BIG and very

cool. Up to 40 people can be seated at a time. Food will be

shuttled out from the kitchen on shore, nothing will be cooked

on the ice. There will however be TV in da house. Think it

might get busy during football games?

They will be open into the evening for all the people out in

sleeper houses, Nick has alot of sleepers and there are many

privately owned sleepers too.

Gonna be interesting

This seems like a great idea but a little suprised to hear it out of Zippel. Of all the resorts on LOW Zippel seems to have the smallest bar for a good sized resort. Other resorts have more than one bar by way of comparison. Over the years they've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on making very nice cabins and a pool and never done anything to the bar. More than likely this is one reason why a "bar" on the ice is a good idea for them. It should go over well and hope they also sell bait in it as it can take a good half hour to leave the sleeper in the morning to go to the resort to get bait.

More than likely if this goes over well you'll see more at other resorts.

Have had a private sleeper up there for 5-6 years but have been going there for over 12 years. This is my fovorite resort on LOW. A couple years ago Nick got me tied into a 10.5lb eye on a charter, that was fun. She went back and Nick was very happy with that decision.

Would love to see a picture of this contraption if anyone is back in the area! Awesome idea! For those who are worried about people abusing this privelage, it's really no different than any other bar or anglers out on the ice all day with their own stock. Have to be responsible. The real winners are the guys out in sleepers! Have to imagine it will draw some in.

This is a great idea. I'd stop by in a flash & rent a hole for an hour too. Good for them to be thinking of new ways to generate revenue & going forward with it. They need one of these off Adrians Rd & on URL too!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
