Tube Flies Help?

Recommended Posts

I was by Duluth and stopped in at the Great Lakes Fly Company and saw some sweet tube flies for the first time. I picked up some tubes for tying them, but forgot to ask when tying materials onto the tube, how you hold the tube down to tie on it???? In the vise it just gets crushed or slips..........

HMH makes a tube fly adapter. It is a plate that clamps into the jaws on your vise. There is a removable pin that you slide the tube on to and tighten down on to the plate.

hard to describe, but if you look at one online you'll know what I'm talking about. Unless you have a specific tube fly vise, tubes will not work on a traditional vise without the adapter.

Also, if was not explained to you, after trimming the tubes to length, take a lighter to each end of the tube to flare them out. This will help keep th thread wraps (or tube coneheads) from slipping off the tube while tying.
