St Cloud Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I got an extension from scheels in st cloud on Monday. They had 5 or 6 left. The lady at the counter said they were a hot commodity and they are going fast.

You could get by without one if you shovel down close to the ice, it's just that there's so much snow now.

Some lakes you don't need one yet, but others you won't get to the bottom of the ice without one.

Made it out to one of the area lake for a bit today. Found a few crappies still roaming the basin area of this lake. 25-28ft was the magic depth, plastics were the only thing I could get the bigger fish to bite on. full-26589-43025-20140301_152138.jpg

Location was key to all of my success today. Find good numbers and a few are bound to bite wink

It was an interesting but yet fun day..... today. Like Rick, numbers were key. Wave after wave of basin fish usually put out only one or two "dummies" at a time......lots of blank stares, a decent amount of chasers, but only suppose about 20 biters. Got fish off of waxes, euroes, minnows, and plastics....essentially equal amounts.... you just had to find the one that was hungrier than the others. Truthfully, do not think what was tipped really mattered, but threw everything at them regardless. Similarly, had to work, high, low, and even fishing nearly blind in the middle because the screen was so full....any opening had to be tried. My poor pops, pretty new to the primetime crowded flasher game, had a hard time even figuring out where he was. Ultimate key to success was to locate the chasers and keep them chasing with very little action.....

Ya I was using a camera and at times even dead sticking a live euro on a diamond jig was the ticket

Out again today. Hit a different lake, but fish were just as deep basin oriented as the lake we hit yesterday. Most years,by the first of march the panfish have begun to migrate tward their late ice locations, this has been anything but a "normal"year. The fish we targeted today are in pretty much the same place I have been finding them since first ice.

A few ft made all the difference in the world today. We were fishing a super soft muddy spot that is surounded by a bit harder sand/silt bottom. While the crapies were activly roaming around the harder bottom area, the softer bottom was holding them like a magnet. Once you got off the mud the fish only hung around for a short time once you found a school. Needless to say we spend most of our day on the small mud patch grin

My Vexilar looled like this for a good part of the day . Bottom is the thin line at 26ft, we were in super soft mud. Not much for a bottom return, even the jigs were hard to see. full-26589-43039-20140302_133013.jpg

Getting them to bite was pretty easy, but overall size ran smallish. Did manage a few nicer ones though.

This one fell for a ops panfish jig tipped with a crappie minnow. full-26589-43043-20140302_140437.jpg

Most bit on the Northland Mooska tipped with a plastic tail. full-26589-43041-20140302_151115.jpg

Headed out around 2pm today.Took for ever to find fish.Started in 17' and found a couple of sunnies in each hole then finally moved out of the way somewhere and fished in 10'-12'and first two holes I was marking fish 2-6' off the bottom.Stayed semi busy with Gills and a few crappies mixed in.Torwards the last hour decided to keep some for a friend.Did ok today useing plastics and small jigs.Popped a new spring bobber on before I started and seemed to do the trick for getting those light twitches.

Went out on this beautiful day and hit a lake I have been having questions about. So I treked out to Mayhew lake just to give it a shot and see if there was any life left in it, It had a bad winter kill last year. Well got on at the public access and dragged my gear all the way down to the north/far-middle of the lake. Talk about a workout. punched some holes in 14-15 FOW and set up shop. Right away I had life on the vex. I started getting perch on with descent size I caught about 50 of them and came home with 18 eaters for perch. I also hit 5-6 slimmers all about 16-22 inches long. they would scare my perch away. So I had no choice to catch them and transplant them in another hole I drilled about 40 ft from my pop-up. all in all it was nice to see some life in Mayhew and the action was non-stop from the time I punched holes till I got the second part of my workout hauling it all back, BOY that snow is deep when your the only one breaking trail. full-46894-43163-img_20140308_150443.jpg

Made it out today with a few friends. Fishing wasn't easy smile for most of us anyway wink really had to work for the fish we got. full-26589-43197-20140309_171955.jpg

Got all of our fish just off a shallow feeding flat, 11-20ft of water is what we were fishing. Various plastics and live bait caught fish, though I would say that the plastics won the numbers game. I would have thought the fish would have bit bettet today than they did smile

We did get one out of season non target fish... full-26589-43201-20140309_142734.jpg we weren't too sure what he had on his line for a while, it put up one heck of a fight. After a few quick photos Little Red slipped this big girl back down the hole full-26589-43202-20140309_142852.jpg

This is Rileys biggest walleye to date.It made me very happy to see the youngest member of our group score such a great fish grin

He wasnt the only one that caught a non target fish. I was looking for crappies and I found a few but this bad boy hit like a mack truck and was one heck of a fight. The fish were shall I say not too cooperative today which was honestly quite a shock but it was beautiful outside thats for sure and well worth the trip out!!!

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
