St Cloud Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

This is an awsome alternative to "regular" fishing. I know most of the streams listed in these areas, but no real know how to fish them. Any tips would be appreciated. Not looking for spots, just techniques. What are the sizes of browns being pulled out?

You can also stop by stop light bait on highway 10. They have some free booklets that show all the trout streams in the area. Not my favorite shop around, but its definitely better with the new ownership.

yes i noticed i caught the bigger ones when i was off bottom with my slip bobber even though i could see some surface......but i did catch more when i was fishing only a few feet down!you gotta have current or jig the bobber in too....you may even get a few eyes in the mix or some very nice small mouth bass even!the bigger crappie minnows did not do as well as the smaller ones also.....going to try my other honey holes so called in the area!

Here's a more detailed DNR link:

DNR Montrose

In general, you are better off hitting small streams early in the season before the vegetation fills in.

Thanks for the reponses guys! That's pretty much what I assumed with my educated guess, but have seen other reports of lakes in the mid to upper 60's, thought it was HIGH whistle

Koronis was 60-67 degrees depending on where you were on the lake last night. The cold algea bloom is hitting it hard now and the cottonwood fuzz is getting thick as well. Tough for trolling cranks. But there are fish to be had for those livebait rigging or jigging. We ended up catching 6 eyes from 13-22" pulling cranks will a few that came unbuttoned on the way to the boat.

Was out on Koronis end of last week and had a decent bite in the evening pulling crankbaits. Lots of 13.5-14.5" walleyes as well as a few 16-19" walleyes caught. During the day there has been a decent bit on the breaklines. Sometimes at the top and sometimes deeper. Shiner minnows were still putting fish in the boat but leeches and crawlers are becoming more effective. Water temps ranged from 59.5 to 67.8 degrees in the areas I fished. Still a fair amount of aglae floating around fouling crankbaits.

Sunfish on area lakes seem to be staging for the spawn.

Good Luck!

Fished Big Watab this Sunday and went 4 for 6 on rainbows.

We lost a couple on the way to the boat.

All fished where 14-15"s

A small michigan stinger called boy-girl pattern that is gold, blue and pink did most of the damage and one other fish on mixed veggies colored stinger as well.

all fish where caught 20-30 ft down on the riggers about 80 to 100 ft back.

speed was 1.6 to 2.4 mph, a little wind would have helped the bite. very flat water.

Was out on koronis today and did alright some small mixed fish. Then got a 30" eye and an 18" and 8 keeper crappies. My brother caught the big eye thought it was weeds till ten feet from the boat and it finally started to fight. We took pictures and made what we thought was a successful release. The fish did not come from deep water so this was kind of weird and was only out of water for one picture and to remove the hook. We fished the area for another 20 mins when we noticed a fish floating. We started to go to it when we noticed a bald eagle getting lower so we sped up the eagle took off then from the side when we were 10' from the fish a pelican swoops in between the boat and the fish. We scared off the pelican and unfortunatly it was the walleye we released. But that was one crazy pelican The saying must be true pelican pelican your beak can hold more than your belly can. That would have been crazy to try and watch but we could not let that happen. Anyways that was our fishing adventure for the 4th weekend. Hope others had some fun to.

Congrats on the nice eye. Too bad about the release not working out. So is it going on your brother's wall?

Sometimes fish don't go back down when they should. Catch enough of them and it happens. Sounds like an exciting trip though. smile

I went out yesterday. It was pretty slow but did get one 18 inch eye and a few bass and sunfish. Caught the eye is four feet pulling a trap through weeds during mid day. Never know where those things are at.

Casey, do you go out in a boat or from shore? If in a boat, where do you put in? and do you navigate both up and downstream with a medium sized boat?

Sounds good. I've been north of the paper mill several times. So your talking just below the dam? Is the access on the east or west side? Thanks for the info.

as usual i have been out fished again!

full-27018-1448-0925000847.jpg

crappies have been grouped up in 20 ish ft. , suspended at about 12 ft, and making runs into the shallows during primetime, had best crappie fishing of the year thursday night around 10 at night in 4 to 7 ft. after all the rain blew through, almost skunked friday night though. although borch found the eyes shallow a few weeks ago(i think he can smell them) i have just started seeing them, the fish are very well fed and thick....looks like the fall bite is on big time.....if you can get out, now would be the time to do it!

Looks like fun and that is a nice thick slab.

The shallow bite continues with the shiner minnows schooled up tight against shorelines, especially in current areas. And with all this rain there is significant current in areas that there is normally little to none this time of year. Frogs are also starting to show up on the lake shorelines and there seems to be quite a few of them but nothing like to old days.

Made it out Firday night and after a big blow all day the walleyes were relating to wind blown shorelines even though the lake flattened out in the evening. Found plenty of 12-20" walleyes willing to smack a crankbait. Both shad baits and stickbaits put walleyes in the boat. Water temps ranged from 58-60 degrees.

Walleyes smell good. wink

fished north of Sartell this afternoon and evening. Kept 3 'eyes around 18" and must have released 3-4x as many 13" and under. Caught a few smallies w/ the largest @ 20" (wow what a fighter) and way too many rock bass.

But when the bite shut off, it was definitely done. Good times.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better

Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other

That's good news. I haven't seen any ice in Black Bay yet, but it looks like the small bays should start to freeze up this weekend. Hopefully we make some ice next week.   Below is the forecast for Cook. We should have temps mostly below zero . The bottom section below shows that it should not be windy, and no snow is predicted. All good signs for making ice.
