Eh, you're not missing much, Brad, and don't let Rick tell you otherwise.

We all know the fish quit biting after Labor Day! smile

grin

Nice crappie Jeremy, they should start showing up in better numbers over the deeper water soon wink

So I hadn't been out to my local favorite lake in a while, but I was hit with a dose of boredom that I hadn't felt since the penultimate week of last year's American Idol....so I decided to go fishing in the rain.

I brought two rods with: one for senkos, one for topwater. The topwater was what I started with and what I ended with...fish were going nuts over deepish weedlines, though it was best if there was cabbage nearby. Twitch twitch twitch etc etc etc, nothing more complicated than that.

See y'all on the water! smile

I went out on the river with #4 Mepps spinners and did good on the bass but 3 spinners later I made up my mind to use leaders from now on, more northerns than I thought.

Very nice pictures! Nice smallies, and that crappie was big. I've fished the river up there near the Sartell dam. I remember there was a really nice access with a dock.. lots of memories! That lake near St. Joe, I think I ice fished that about three years ago. There were big crappies in there! I have a brother who lives in St. Cloud.

It's getting to be that time of year...the pike and muskies will get more and more active as the waters temps drop. I always do better for them early in the year and then again late in the year, all the way through October.

Have you goten a few muskies on this stretch of the river? I saw a few kids chucking huge baits below the saint cloud dam and thought they were crazy. Is it a waste of time or is there a healthy population?

Went out on sartell river tonight.I was aiming for crappie and Wahm Bam! A 20.5" walleye lingering an eddie.Found some smaller bass but the walleye took a crappie minnow on a glow 16oz jig ,without any extra weight.Ran in to some fishing buddies of mine too, which was awesome to see them and chat with again. full-45395-36847-imag0448.jpg

Being so unprepared for bow opener on saturday i decided to hit a small lake in the area. This time of year I'm torn on whether to hunt or fish. Great decision on the fishing tho as fish were extremely active before the front moved in. Trolling crankbaits along the weed edge in 14' produced fish like i havent seen in awhile. I couldnt go 5 mins trolling without a fish on. Majority were bass in the 12-15" range i couldnt keep them off the hooks. I bet i caught 20 of the little guys. I did manage 3 northerns biggest being around 25" and 2 walleyes. One at 19" and the other at 23". All this happened from 8-10:30 AM. Switched to some deeper water around 11 to fish the suspended crappies i was marking and that paid off as well. Plain white jig and a minnow working slow worked. And again more little bass. Fish are starting to move out to deeper water thats for sure as the water temp was at 69 and will only rapidly drop from here on out. Fall walleye bite is just around the corner grin

Great reports Guys smile I made it out on the river yesterday, fishing was kind of tough due to the rapidly falling water temp at 66 degrees, rising water, high pressure and that nasty wind. Couldn't fish the areas we wanted to, but still managed a few fish, though most were small. It was just one of those days wink

Not a waste of time at all. I've had more luck fishing them above the St Cloud dam than below it, but that's probably because I spent more time fishing around Sartell and Sauk Rapids than farther downstream.

And I know there are a lot of guys who do very well for them above the Sartell dam, too.

Keep in mind that most of the fish I've caught (or had on) were when I was targeting walleyes in September, October, and even November with shad raps / husky jerks / flicker shads /etc. I've caught more on these baits than on traditional muskie baits, but again, I've thrown them a lot more, too.

Like stick in Mud said, it's not a waste of time trying. The population is not huge, but it is self sustaining. I have caught a few in each section of the river over the years while fishing for other things, but imo, above Blanchard has the best numbers of any of the river pools in the area.. Heck, you might even run into a Linder or two fishing this section late Oct or Nov wink

I've also found that they LOVE smallmouth bass, especially the ones flopping around near shore or boatside right before they get lipped/netted. There's not much that'll scare me more (other than seeing eyeguy in socks and sandals and that wading outfit he wears) than having a big 'ski grab a bass a second before I do.

Fishing has really slowed down for me these last three days, from st cloud dam on both sides to many places in Sauk rapids, sartell and again a local lake.Very slow. some crappies, bass, sunfish come out once in a while but I guess the only thing for me is to try above these two dams and see what's comes and then when the funk is over get back to what I been doing below the gates

Nice fish BigPikeGuy! You guys sure must have some large local lakes in the Verndale area smile I can't even see a hint of shoreline in your pic.

Jeremy, I'm in a similar funk... If it wasn't for one heck of a crappie bite I would be hurtin' smile I hope the system we have coming through will turn the walleyes on this evening.

Thanks for the compliments guys! Yes I did crop out the shoreline on the picture, but I can promise you that the fish was caught within 20 miles of St. Cloud.......... Or about 2 miles from my house! I really should change my location to St. Cloud on my profile because I've been living in the area for the past few years, but I'm not sure where I can get that changed at. The fish was very healthy when I released it, despite it's pale color. Here are a couple of more details, I caught it in 6 feet of water trolling a shallow shad rap around 6:30 PM. One other boat saw me hoist it out of the lake and they rushed over and started live bait rigging on the spot once I continued my troll down the mid lake break.

BPG--my stuff--->edit profile scroll down and make the changes.

Nice eye. Even better that you released it. I know there's others that have caught fish that size or close to it and also released them. That's the best part in my opinion knowing first hand that there is a beast swimming in the lake you're on. Congrats!

hey guys,

i'll be in sartell on a business trip next week, driving up from the quad cities. i'll have wedn night and thurs afternoon to fish for a few hours. I love shore fishing rivers and assume i have 2 nice spillways to choose from but i figured that i'd poke my head in here and see if i'm at a time of year where catching some eyes from shore at the dams is possible. smallies, eyes, doesn't matter.

just looking for a nudge in the right direction.

Hnd-For Sartell/////once in a great while I like to fish in sartell. There's the bar their on riverside, look for the paths along the back of it and the paths will take you down to potential areas. There's also the popular area where folks park by the dam.Take a walk to the watab river bridge and follow the paths down.Don't be surprised to see ppl there. It's no secret at all.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
