St Cloud Fishing Reports

Sunnys finally started spawning. Caught quite a few last weekend. Largest about .75. Will try as soon as the wind subsides if they didn't drown in the deeper water.

I REALLY hate to do this being its my 1st post but I'm in need of some help.

I want to take my family out to a dock somewhere this weekend to fish. We don't have a boat so looking somewhere for a few hours where my 5 year old son can make some cast and spend a few hours. Sunfish or Crappies is fine and they honestly don't have to be huge in size either. Just some cheap entertainment for him.

My question is; Does anyone know where I could go? I've tried to do some research online through Google but coming up empty. I live in Sartell but willing to drive to places like Pleasant Lake, Pine, Pelican, or Two Rivers... Just want to find a public dock or something to do.

Please help if you can. Thanks

-Sami

Welcome to HSO and the St. Cloud forum, Sami.

Pleasant would be a good choice, but there is always a lot of people using the public access. There are a couple good fishing piers around, Spunk has a nice one with access to some decent fish as does the Mississippi river here in town. Buerman's on Big is another good choice, if you have kids with they will almost always let you fish there. Lake George would also be a kid friendly place, plenty of action for them with all the bluegills, and you never know when something bigger will bite, I have seen some big pike and bass get pulled out of there over my life time.

Really Lake George in St Cloud? I had no clue at all. Maybe we will have to check that out. We drove to Pleasant last night to look around but they have stuff going on in town and could be a busy weekend there.

You mentioned Spunk Lake, from what you recall would you say upper or lower spunk? Or do you know what side of the lake.

Yes it would be me, my husband and three kids that we'd be bringing.

Thanks again for the wonderful forums and feedback.

It would be Middle Spunk. Drive into Avon and take left to the lake (east side). Kramer also has a pier but you need to join the St Joe sportsmans club.

Welcome Sami, the pier Rick is referring to is on Middle Spunk. Almost due south of the public beach/Fishers in downtown Avon. You can also google Mill Park in Fairhaven. Lake Maria State Park is beautiful and has a pier as well as some boat rentals. Lake George is a sure bet though if you bring some wax worms and a tiny hook or ice fishing jig. No, you will not bring home supper, but will find some action right off the main boardwalk. Plus if the kids get bored or hot, the splash pad is a hundred yards away. Have fun!

There's also several docks at the river/chain access in Cold Spring. Good luck. Welcome to HSO

Made it out for a few hours this afternoon, action was kinda slow, found a few fish but had to work for them, here is a nice fat 29 incher. full-26589-34844-032.jpg My buddy Traderlee got in on the action toofull-26589-34845-031.jpg

We found a whole school of these too, but size wasn't the bestfull-26589-34846-053.jpg The best depth for the cats was 14-20 ft, got almost all on chicken liver, cut bait just wasn't doing the trick. Crappies were holding just off the main channel where it hugs close to the bank, find willow trees and you will find some fish. full-26589-34847-054.jpg Ended my day here smile

Hello, new to the board and looking for advice. I fish with my 13 and 8 yr old. we don't have a boat. last summer we had a lot of success fishing for smallies where the sauk enters the mississippi. Mostly using senkos and tubes. This year we are having some difficulting catching any smallies. We have used senkos, tubes, poppers, torpedo's, spooks...nothing seems to be working. 2 part question 1. is there something different we should be trying and 2. is there a better spot to catch smallies that we can access on foot. thanks

Welcome to HSO and the St. Cloud forum, DougP. The bite for smallies on the river has been hit and miss this year, more so than most years. You are in a good area, and using the right baits, just have to keep at it. For more good river spots I would just wait till the water drops enough so you can walk up and down the bank, there are plenty of nice fish just a few more yds in either direction. If you don't feel like waiting check out below the dams in St. Cloud or Royalton, always something biting down there. As for different presentations, 3in Mister Twisters, in-line spinners, like the no. 3 Mepps or a good old minnow under a float will get some bites.

btw, great pics, thanks for sharing smile

As always -nice report and pics Rick.

Took my little guy to Lake George for a while today. Mainly because of the closeness to the park and splash pad. He had fun catching the little sunnies for about an hour or so and then really tired himself out running around on the different playgrounds before he decided he would hit up the splash pad. I would recommend Lake George to anyone with little ones just wanting to get them exposed to fishing. Tiny jigs with gulp waxies and minnow heads worked great for us.

Had some fun "on the pontoon" (as the song goes) this morning. Started off throwing a good old fashion Hola Popper since the water was like glass...

full-43284-34875-image.jpg

Once the breeze picked up I decided to try something new to me. My brother in law turned me on to a soft bait frog. It's a Ribbit Frog made by Stanely Jigs. Paired up with a weighted double hook you sink into the body. I was really impressed with the action these had and really happy I went with the light weight (1/8 oz) for a slower sink. This bait was lights out for me...probably not new to some but new to me. Used a green pumpkin the whole morning and had some good fun. Here are a few I got pictures of...

Well we did Lake Maria State Park, we did a boat rental but water was really green and quite nasty. Ended up catching ONLY bullheads which are not as fun for kids to catch. Will try another one of the suggestions next time for sure. Thanks again to all for the feedback.

Kind of a marathon day today, started around 1 and didn't get done till 10pm. First spot was the Beaver Islands, with the lower water we thought we could make it around in just shoes and shorts. It wasn't quite as much fun as I thought it would be, but we still got outfull-26589-34903-012.jpg

full-26589-34905-015.jpg Found a few ripe river treats along the wayfull-26589-34906-019.jpg

full-26589-34908-018.jpg Overall action wasn't all that good, I think we ended up only getting around ten bass for our efforts. Water needs to go down another foot or so before I try that again grin

Second half of the day was spent in the boat above the dam. We were after cats as usual, the bit was pretty good, it was the catching that stunk. We likely had 15-20 hits, but only a few hook-ups. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it was almost frustrating by the end of the eveningfull-26589-34909-023.jpg

full-26589-34910-024.jpg. Most of the bites we got today came from over 15ft. Cut bullhead and chicken liver both worked, can't say one was getting more hits than the other.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
