St Cloud Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

had fun on horseshoe in the boat got 2 small cats bit very light

Mrpike1973 gets the honor of providing us with the first open water report of the year, well done sir grin.

I saw a little open water myself today. Was on a lake in the Brainerd area, walking out to the spot and my buddie all of a sudden becomes about 3ft shorter crazy. He fell into an old hole that was enlarged by runoff and covered by a foot of snow. With no dry boots for him, it ended our day before it realy even began frown. Might try to get out somewhere tomorrow if it isn't raining too hard.. Then I'm done with the ice rods for the yearcool

Got a few hours in this afternoon on Clearwater. Both Bob's bay and Bj's access are toast. We worked our way over to the East side of the lake and gained access by knocking on a door and asking to use the home owners yard.

Once on the lake, and at our destination, we found right around 2ft of ice yet, the top 6-8in was pretty bad, but the rest was still hard yet.

Started drilling close to a shallow bullrush flat in the 4-10ft range, didn't mark anything in the deeper holes, but the shallow ones showed some signs of life smile. Got a mix of sunfish and crappies, the crappies were right in the rushes while the gills prefered to stay just outside the reeds. Trick was to stay on the move, picking out the ones that wanted to bite and leaving the lookers alone. The plan was to stay till dark and see if some big crappies moved in , the rain came well before then frown We were off the lake and at the resturant enjoying a burger before 4pm.

I think today was my last time out for the ice season. Might try and make it to one of the local rivers this week for some open water cat action if the weather warms.

Ice gear is getting put away sometime early this week. Waiting till the snow is gone before I bring the boat home. Hoping to get a little shore fishing in Fri or Sat somewhere, likley either the Sauk or the Elk.

I'll also be out this weekend, especially if the weather is as nice as they say it's going to be. Bait stores have crawlers now, too. Hopefully the suckers'll be runnin'. smile

do you think the pout will be ready to play this early in the year. I would like to meet up with you sometime and try to catch a few. to this day I have not ever caught a pout and I want to cross it off my list of fish I have yet to catch.

Guys, I don't think you would realy want to fish for the pout we have in the river in this area. For the most art they are much much smaller than the ones you will get out of the lakes such as Mille Lacs, Leech and Lake of the Woods.

I have gotten a few quality ones in the winter but most have been in the 10-14in range. Imo, they just aren't worth fishing for.

I have a feeling they were more of an accidental catch for carmike wink

Pout hater shockedwink If they are biting...why not fish for them. Bring a light set up and have some fun. Looks to be at least a week till the bite really turns on for anything else more accessible.....Also saw a few ponds open up today..... glad you got to fish one Jeremy!

Yep, I'm the pout hater grin Don't fish for the ones in the river for the same reason I don't fish for sunfish out of lake George, they are kinda small wink

I guess il have to do some more ice fishing.I got a tip the other day that there are some pretty safe areas in st Joe for late ice fishing.Gotta go back in the shed and pull it all out again

Um.... I hope your kidding...right? Ice is getting pretty iffy around here right now. I know of a few lakes in the area people are still getting on but none of them are in the St. Joe area. The lakes people are getting on yet are the large, deeper ones that had thick ice all winter. Even theese I hear are getting pretty soft.

LOL, those pesky pout just won't go away. smile

I used to live on the river just above the Sartell Dam. At night early in the year, I'd go out fishing for catfish (usually with nightcrawlers unless I had cut bait) off the dock. Invariably, I'd catch eel pout--and lots of them. They're tiny. I'm not lying about this in order to keep my honey hole all to myself. They're really tiny.

Because the cats up there don't get all that big (at least not all that often, or at least where I was fishing), I would use a light action rod and 6 lb test. They didn't even put up a fight on that set up.

So, that's the secret, guys. Maybe sharing it in this open forum will get me out of that all-inclusive guided trip I've gotta lead for whoever wins the ice-out prediction contest on Horseshoe. smile

Great day fishing! In Sartell I Caught 4 catfish around five lbs and big ole carp. Then I cruised over to st Joe lake and walked out on the ice and took home a handfuls of Sunnies and crappies.Ice was a little over a foot thick.Had to get on the ice by walking down a dock and jumping down off of it.

I also made it out today, hit several spots, half dozen places on the Sippi, the Elk by Palmer and ended the day at the Clearwater mill stream. Action was hit and miss on the River, elk had some big ones but few of them, and the Mill stream had lots of fish but most were small.

I did however find a decent school of crappies, but wasn't set up for them. If the wind isn't too bad tomorrow I might bring the ul rod and a handfull of jigs down.

Found water temp as low as 45 on the Miss and as high as 53 at the Mill stream.

Forgot to mention, the woodticks are starting to come out. Found a couple regular ticks and one tiny little deer, none lived long enough to feed wink

I was out yesterday, too. Found a nice mess of redhorse and brown suckers around Sartell, and a redhorse and walleye near SCSU. I still haven't caught a carp or a catfish, so I'm heading back out today before the miserable weather hits tomorrow to see if I can complete the "Grand Slam" of spring river fishing (carp, redhorse, brown sucker, and catfish). (Notice I left the eel pout off the list. smile )

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
