Smurf with all that driving around those lakes every weekend, you should actually stop and wet a line once in a while you might surprise yourself ?

Rick G and Royce nice running into you guys today. The action was just as fast on the other end but size was the same. Crazy the amount of people out there today!

That's the plan Tuesday afternoon!? pretty busy ya know ?just figuring out where. Wouldn't mind getting a few crappies or tangling with a kitty or 2.

Wow with the amount of traffic  out there this year and all the catfish hype, It was only a matter of time thankfully no one got hurt! Hats off chemist for helping someone out in need. A few more pieces of metal and parts addded to the meth hole graveyard id guess.

It was weird. My son and i were in the house and i heard a loud pop and then someone yell. And then the water started coming out of the holes. I figured it was only a matter of time since there have been many vehicles going that route to get to that north shoreline. Spoke with a few people that were in the area and they didnt even realize it was there or what it was.

Also saw a kid come off Becker doing donuts just as they got through the cattails and onto the river channel. Break through there and i bet there would be some really pissed of people

Why doesn’t that area get posted with thin ice signs?

I believe i once heard that they quit doing it for liability reasons. Sometimes people will put branches or something to mark it. But with the minimal amount of snow it doesnt help for holding anything plus then who is going to pull it in the spring.

exactly the reason why. back in the old days when they first found this, and a local business man from richmond drowned there, a group of snowmobilers , my dad included, used to go out and mark that spot.....until the liability issue came up.

Can someone explain what the meth hole is? What’s the story behind it?

I’ve often heard it referenced on this site many times over the years. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen someone explain the details of it?

I believe what you guys are saying but liability seems like an odd reason.  Must be something on the back end that over rides safety on the front end.

Good to hear that nobody went down and only some vehicle damage.   The hole has claimed a little more junk?  Quite a few snowmobiles and trucks have driven into it the last 30+ yrs I have been fishing out there. Personally have witnessed two trucks take partial dips and one snowmobile go completely in....many many close calls...lol.   Like Smurf said, they used to mark it yrs ago... but put cones or signs up and people come to look... so the deterrents actually drew more people in?

Thanks for the info interesting reading. I’m surprised we don’t see or hear of more occurrences? Or why is this particular meth hole significantly worse than others?

Lol same here I was hoping for a cool story behind it and not science.

I was wondering too.........

Yes, this one is consistent enough that it keeps a open hole, even through the coldest stretches. Some years it's not much bigger than a two foot wide hole with thinner ice out a couple ft, other years it's big enough to drive a truck into

Somewhere on this thread (probably 80 pages back) there was a map showing where the meth hole is located.

It's also close to a very well known catfishing hole, so is used to describe that particular location.

Or one of the old Cool Cats threads.  I’ve seen it posted before also.

I'd it was that slow I'll probably go back to long. Explains why there wasn't anyone there tonight or Sunday afternoon.

I fished along that bar on the south end. Might go further south and east from where I was.  Was activity there.

....and what songs were blasting through those headphones when the laker hit? That might be the key.   For me, I can always get the fish bite to turn on if I dial up the polka!

On the South Shore...  There is still some ice fishing taking place in a few areas of the lake along the south shore but most resorts and outfitters have pulled their fish houses and called it a good year.  Make sure to call ahead to the resort or outfitter for current conditions if you plan on getting on the ice.  Safety first always.   For those still fishing, some are still targeting walleyes.  There continues to be a good morning / evening bite along the south shore just prior to sunset.  Quality fish are being caught in a number of areas.     Most still ice fishing are targeting trophy pike.  It was another great week with some big fish caught.  Another week of big fish tipping that 40 inch mark with big girths.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt set about a foot under the ice or just off of the bottom have proven effective.   On the Rainy River...  Spring open water fishing has begun!  The Rainy River is open in many areas and as of Monday, March 31st, there are two boat ramps open.  The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale and the Frontier Access (about 8 miles to the west of Nelson Park) are both clear of ice.  Boats are running the river and the ice pack is deteriorating by the day.   Initial reports for walleyes are very good with some big fish being caught.  Most are jigging with either plastics or minnows.  Use bright plastics such as chartreuse, orange, pink and white.  for minnows, emerald shiners, fatheads and rainbows have all been productive.     Trolling crankbaits against the current is also effective and will catch fish.  This is also a good technique to cover water if you are not on fish. Rainy River walleye fishing is catch and release from March 1st through April 14th on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.  Initial reports for sturgeon are also good.  Anchored up in a hole or on the slope of a hole with a no roll sinker and sturgeon rig is the ticket.  Lots of walleye anglers reporting sturgeon hookups as well.  Here are the seasons for sturgeon fishing...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  It has been a great ice fishing year up at the Angle.  While there are a few locals still getting out, resorts have pulled off their fish houses and called it a year.     Plan for the MN Fishing Opener which is Saturday, May 10, 2025! The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.
