Minnesota River Fishing Report

Well you seem like a pleasant gentleman!! crazy

I hear ya on the pressure, but it isn't just the river, it is everywhere. Ice fishing has exploded in the last 5 years. Just something we have to deal with.

I'd be careful about talking tough like you're going to wreck somebody's equipement, etc though, especially online. There is no way to be sure that was the guy that took your chisel.

Happens around here on the river in the summer also, but just because you have been fishing this spot for 6-7 seasons doesn't mean you can't find another spot that you can fish without anyone there. The river has tons of spots like you are talking about. Might even find a better spot...

Hey man, I started my post by asking us not to judge too much. Honestly I am a very pleasant person. High school bio teacher and big time advocate of doing the right thing. I was steamed up about a few things and just had to vent. I would actually never act on what I commented on. Just blowing off steam as some people really get under my skin. I know the guy that drove off with my spud bar knew it was mine. No doubt. I feel sorry for him actually. If he needed it that bad - so be it. I have an extra. As far as the guy with the car that backs down and parks. I will at least say something next time because maybe he just doesn't know.

I know all about the finding other spots. I started icefishing the river about 9 yrs ago before a now popular spot by New Ulm got popular. Then found another spot a few miles west and it was awesome. 2 years later, I moved again because of people crowding in. Seems it's just how it goes.

Did manage 2 fat pigs this past weekend in my normal area. Cold temps kept the crowds home.

I was walking along the river in Jordan yesterday and saw two different sets of 4 wheeler tracks that were towing a portable shack downriver. They had drilled about 10 holes across the river to check ice thickness. I walked about 1.5 miles downstream and still saw those 4 wheeler tracks. I've always thought that ice fishing on rivers was very dangerous and I have always stayed off river ice except for near the shore. I wonder how safe it really is, but obviously depends on ice thickness. Anyone know what kind of fish you could target in winter in that area?

Be VERY CAREFUL on the river in the winter. Ice thickness can vary from 24" to skim ice in a matter of 10 feet!!!

You don't get a chance to fall through the MN RIVER ice more than once.

Know the river current.

Check thickness constantly.

Know that it changes with flow.

It's darn risky. Certainly can be done. Just know your risks and be prepared for them.

Finally got out fishing, been a busy summer at work. Spent Saturday and today in the Mankato area. Amazing to show up at a boat ramp on Labor Day weekend and be the only person at the launch! Caught a lot of sheep head , a bunch of small channel cats and 3 carp, nothing to brag about but action all day. My boy’s first river trip and he loved it!3E2BA716-0086-40EA-AC40-2CEC198BF837.thumb.jpeg.82d648323bd5b6f33f01659c4008abe5.jpeg

My first sturgeon and a couple of cats. Great day to be on the river. Still high but manageable however the landing was muddy 2C040A64-5071-4701-B498-9795EA8D41D1.thumb.jpeg.d5d1b953889dae860ad9882280181a56.jpeg7DBFD445-5E53-40B8-9DF6-059C2F63404A.thumb.jpeg.21613c3b0c788a3ea3ba6ec3d5c38dab.jpeg

Had a lot of luck catching cats this summer. The pre-spawn bite at the end of June was awesome! All fishing from shore. Slowed down the last couple of weeks, think they started spawning. All of these were caught from shore and in the 10-25 lbs range. Surprised I didn't hook into any bigger ones, I know they're in there. Been a lot of fun, though.

Nice walleye, I have caught several walleyes while fishing crappies. If there are smaller 4-6 inch crappies around there will be Walleyes not far away.  Lately several guys I have chatted with claim they see crappies on the Vex's but they won't bite.  I wonder if those are really shiners?  As there are lots of shiners in Buffalo lake, and several other lakes here in central Mn, have large amount of shiners roaming the lakes.  I use minnows in several different areas,  and sizes can make a difference as well.  If the crappies are biting good, even fatheads will work and take the bigger ones at that. if it's slow smaller minnows, down to a size 16 trout bug on a drop shot.

I had a cheaper unit I would leave out to save time fishing, not like it cost me a lot of money. Once it was banked up, it was well worth leaving it on the lake, saved about 30 minutes banking time and drilling holes.

Sounds good, going up on Wednesday, fishing through Saturday. Would like to get a good mixed bag of fish.  May bring some 7-up & butter, for the pout.  bring lots of Jigs, spoons and other baits.  It has been a fews years since my last trip to LOTW,  been hitting lots of other lakes.

Just all depends on your choice of area, which access you go out from?  Been a while since I was out there chasing the fish around.  Although the tullies, do sound like lots of fun.

Here’s part two of this post I guess! Got out with my older brother this morning.  Headed north to a area neither of us have really been to before. To our surprise we both limited on some dandy pike (spearing) in a couple hours! Was a great time and ended with some good eats! Great weather as well other than the front moving through. Over all we seen a very good amount of fish but they weren’t super aggressive today with the cold front rolling through. Ooh yeah if anyone was wondering area.... BLA.

I release all gills over 8 inches and I release most fish i catch. The photo was of one of a few nice ones released today. I was able to chat with some young guys who were impressed with the number of fish I was catching. They all asked why I was not keeping all of the gills and I said I only keep them when I am going to eat them as they are best fresh. I also explained the importance of release bug bluegills and to eat those 7-8 inchers. Both you guys said that make sense and both said they would release the big gills from now on.

Fished several NE Wright county lakes got on some really nice bass with panfish jigs the smaller the better. Had a flurry for about half hour many largemouth caught. Then did a night bite for the crappies It really pays to move around. Also learned from some on the MInnow or not to minnow thread to upsize I used a small forage minnow spoon with 3-4 spikes that really was the ticket. Thanks all for the help everyone. The fish seem to me to be just starting to move a bit shallower with the warmer weather coming this weekend it should just get better. Most of the fish were in 12-17 feet of water.

Yes we made one trip into Little Johnson, planned on spending the day up there and had a thunderstorm move in around 3pm, got out of there pretty quick as it was a 45 minute boat ride back. Caught a bunch of Smallies up there but no Walleye.  We will hit Little Johnson harder this May when we go.

I fished Dog many years ago. All it had at the time were small crappies. But population seemed pretty good. Always caught fish.
