Caught 2 shovel nose sturgeon last night. Wish they'd grow up and get bigger!!

We got one the other day too, and it was pretty small but still fairly cool. No matter what they're not going to get huge. If you want big you should cross your fingers that some kind of laker population starts taking off smile You hear reports of them being caught, rarely. Maybe improved water quality will make it more common and they'll start coming up from the Mississippi (though I don't think there's a HUGE population of them in pool 2 either).

Buddy caught a shovelnose on saturday when we were out. We launched out of Shakopee and went up stream a little ways.

Caught a couple Sheephead and a white bass last night casting jigs from shore. Worked the rocks and any water that was moving. Was hoping for a Walleye or two but no deal.

RBS,

Where are you getting into the white bass? I have fished the MN River between Shakopee down to MPLS for a decade or better and have only caught one of them. I hear they put up a decent fight.

Dont give up, its been slow with me the past few times as well. I am blaming it on the unstable weather.

in the upper lip...sorry couldn't help it lol. No actually was jigging a rocky shoreline. I am thinking about getting some fatheads and trying it also. Anyone getting any on minnows?

I always seem to do better for 'eyes with live bait (or at least a head off of a recently-live minnow). I'd get some fatheads next time you go. I know I'm going to bring some. Some of the jokers smile I fish with swear by the plastics, but I say nothing beats a plastic with a minnow head for some added flavor. They're better at fishing than I am, and they have faster reflexes. I need the fish to hold the thing longer so I can make that slow-reaction-time hookset. Cold water can be another story though. Dipping hands in minnow buckets does get old if it's freezing out smile

I've been out for the last few week and I have ether caught or have seen Walleye taken on Jig and fathead, White twister tail and jig, Perch color #5 shad rap and a night crawler rig.

I went out Sunday and it was quite. Nothing!! Kinda spooky. There must have been a lot going on under the full moon. It just had the feeling that I showed up after to smoke had cleared. Not even a ripple on the surface.

As for White Bass. I'm catching one at a time. That is only one per outing. Kind of strange considering White Bass hunt in schools. Most of the time with W-Bass you can pull a few out of the school before they move on. My best guess is there is a lot of bait fish in the area.

We also got into a couple white bass the other day, but just one in each location, no school to speak of. Getting into them when they're schooled up can be a blast, but no such luck.

The walleye fishing has been pretty darn good this fall. The water is low and tough to get around most places, but the fish are there and they are hungry. Standard 1/4 oz jig and a ringworm has been our bait of choice.

Find a rocky area with a little faster current and you might find some fish. smile

Most all of our fish have come from pitching towards structure, but also had some success vertical jigging holes.

Now til ice up is a great time to see some real trophies! Please release the fatties for future fun. cool

I'm tagged out and that really looks like fun but I have lost the use of my boat, I tore off part of the lower unit in NoDak on Devils Lake so I might have to hitch a ride with one of you guys some time.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaarn nice fish, but im a numbers guy when it comes to the MN, I’ve caught enuff big walleyes in my day. Now i prefer them 15 inch walleyes and saugers for the pan. 15 inch is perf. You can clean a Lim in about 2 mins, and they taste great without all the chemys.

Nice Nord.

I paddled from New Ulm yesterday to Judson (20 river miles)..Bit off more than i could chew - Non stop paddling for 7hrs to get to judson 45m after dark. I was planning on floating from New Ulm to Mankato - but with such low flow the only speed you've got is with you paddle. I'd think that is an easy float with normal flow. Fished only 5 minutes.

Beautiful day to be on the river!! T-Shirt n Jeans.

Nice. Gotta love when the kids are catching fish. At least he knows not to lip the walleyes! Tonight we were eating fish for supper and Adam (my 5 year old) says "walleyes have HUGE teeth".

Trout/Wabana were really nice lakes, the one and only time I got to fish them 2 years ago. Would love to make it back up there some day. Too many places, too little time!

      Thank you for the report.

I’ve never just canoed the river so I guess I can’t really debate that time estimate.  It’s always been a float/fish trip but casting only, not stopping to really work a deeper hole or anything.   I used to live on the river along that stretch.  About midway between Isanti and St. Francis.
    • Kettle
Cambridge to St Francis is definitely a long float, Isanti to St Francis not fishing just canoeing takes me about 5-6 hours. If your going solo check out the central park in Andover. You can float solo for about 3 hours and you end up within a 5 minute walk of your vehicle since it twists and turns so much in that stretch. I have not caught many walleye that far south but definitely will get a bass or two

My soft water season ended Saturday. Landed the boat and need to give it some TLC. I fished everyday in October and boated 304 walleye. Primarily fished my 5 favorite fall spots. Strictly used a jig/minnow.  Lots of nice stuff with a fair amount of smaller fish. To be clear I am a catch and release guy. I probably kept 8 fish. This is a picture of a nice one from my last day out..

We got one gadwall yesterday.  Today duck motivation is low.  Clear sky and zero wind right now.  Going back to bed for a couple hours and then off looking for roosters or grouse.  Whatever works.
    • JerkinLips
Fished Thursday-Saturday this week and caught only 12 walleyes in 2½ days, half as many as I caught two weeks ago.  Fishing was quite slow for me, and the walleyes were biting very light.  At least this week there were some decent meal size fish as only 2 were dinks along with 3 slot fish.  Caught another 26" walleye pictured, and this one weighed 5#-11oz, 1oz more than the one I caught two weeks ago.  Maybe it was the same fish and added another ounce.  Weather was nice today and it brought out a lot of boats as shown in the second photo.  Fishing wasn't good enough to deal with this crowd so I quit early.  Good luck fishing, and enjoy the fall.

Had one of those days where I swear those ducks had bullet proof vests on!! Finn laid down after a bit and well my dad sucks!!
    • Wanderer
Floating those sections of the Rum will take you much longer than you’ll originally think it will.  Be aware of that when you plan your trip.  I’m assuming the water is high right now as most rivers in MN are, so it could go a little quicker.   For example, Isanti to St. Francis will be like 10 hours without slowing down much to fish.  Figure about 1 river mile per hour to be a steady pace for a fishing trip.

🤔 He wanted to teach Toto how to catch fish too?
