Nice fish guys and good to see Island Lake getting hit in the winter. I used to put a shack out there on the other end.

If your where I think you are, its not a bad place to set up. On Island I'll use the mid lake structure over shoreline in the winter.

It's pretty neat going out for an hour or two on island and not seeing anyone else. It's like having your own 8,000 acre lake! Those fish rarely see a jig during the long winter months up here. I have been catching some fish too. Mainly just the evening bite though. And tip ups have been doing better than a jigging rod.

fished knife today from about noon-3. iced 3. 2 jigging and one off a tip up. all around 5lbs. three others were lost after the hook set. with two other runs on tip ups but were dropped. both of the baits that were dropped were hydrated ciscos.

A buddy and I were out on Rice and Fish lake today. We caught 2 pike on Rice from 11-2. Out on fish tonight over by the island we ended up with 3 crappies and 1 eye. It was very slow tonight and COLD lol

Went to Kimball and Mink lake for some trout last Friday. My father in-law caught 3 trout and we both caught 9 million 3 inch perch. On day 3 of our trip we went to Leo lake. Fishing was slow but we managed 1 trout and no perch, which was a pleasant surprise. All the lakes mentioned had poor ice conditions and were mainly slush. I would be very careful if planning a trip up that way anytime soon.

Hey RH1 - did you get a permit from the DNR to remove that rock?

( Just askin' )

Yeah RH1, what if everyone brought home a rock from Mil Lacs? eek Huuum, maybe it would be deep enough for Lake Trout then! laugh

it had a zebra mussle on it and i figured it was a good idea to remove it. no wonder my air filters in my aquarium run slower now. thanks for the reminder. good luck.

that would be a lot of rocks. grin. good luck.

what are driving condtions? can one get around with a good AWD vehicle still or is that in the past and you NEED to have a sled.

on that note, anyone here familiar with track replacement on sleds? I tore mine and need to put a new one on.

Get a hold of Matt at MJ Power Sports he is good and his labor isnt too bad. Way better than the other 2 joints selling sleds around here.

took a group of folks up to basswood and knife last week. pike fishing on basswood was very good. lots of fish in the mid to upper 30's(in) with one fat 40incher. herring and ciscos were both working. shallow bay in the weeds. the trout were fussy on knife. only iced a few. travel conditions were good.

Gills and crappies are starting to bite better on Fish Lake. I dceided I would try the area of the Kiwanis contest that held so many fish during the contest. It payed off even better than during the contest.

Minnows havent been producing much but a #10 Diamond jig loaded with waxies is getting all sorts of action. Gills, Crappies and even some dandy rockies. Funny thing is my best bite was between 1pm and 4pm.

Good day on the lake with Northlander, Pout Slayer and Rob. 1 nice walleye out on Fish today. Steve has the video. Too bad I couldn't hook into that when they were in season. But what a beautiful day to be out. A bit windy, but no shelter required. Action was hot and slow at times. Pizza at Hi-Banks was hot too! Managed to bring home fish dinner at least.

Posted

Ya Vic Im assuming your knife will get a good work out. grin Next time bring a full tub of waxies and more of them top secret jigs.

Maybe I will take work off on Sat and go win some prizes wink

How is fishing in the rivers up the shore? How about the ice shelves in the bays? Anyone heard if the trout have moved in?

Posted

Ice is in and out off the north shore. As far as ice shelves in the bays what bays are you talking about? The St. Louis River is still frozen but walleyes are done for the season. Crappies/gills in the back bays is a good bet though.

Would you have any suggestions for a completely "Green (new)" person trying to learn the ropes for trout/salmon fishing.

I am trying to understand where I can fish for salmon/trout : should I focus on Superior or another lake up there??

What should I look for in timing, where might I start? I would love to try for these through the ice.

Trying to learn all the basics about this.

I was thinking about fishing the lake (Superior), offshore if its possible near the river mouths of the knife or french river. It sounds like it is illegal to keep steelhead from the river itself, how about from the lake? It is a long trip from the cities (gas is going so high!) and I want to try and maximize my chances..

Posted

steelhead are illegal to keep anywhere in MN.

Posted

With the way the ice is moving in and out I wouldnt drive up here to fish lake superior unless you can call someone, Marine General maybe, and get a true time report.

Posted

We are still a few weeks away from decent shore fishing. We will make sure to put up some reports and then try to let you know if it is worth the drive. Even when the ice is gone there are days you just can't fish because the wind is too strong. Tough to fish with 6-8 foot waves crashing in on shore.

Posted

Thanks all three of you for the information. It is appreciated. I will stay tuned to learn as much as possible.

I have always understood a clipped steelhead is ok so long as it meets 26" minimum length...

nope, all steelhead caught must be returned. They don't clip steelhead anymore, if you catch a clipped fish its a looper.
